Haze
Genre: Modern First-Person Shooter
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Free Radical
Platforms: Playstation 3 Exclusive
Release Date: May 20, 2008
Official Site: http://hazegame.us.ubi.com/
Universe: ---

Earlier today, during a visit to Ubisoft's booth at the 2007 Games Convention in Leipzig, we had an opportunity to get our hands on a playable version of Haze for the first time. The demo at the show features three partial levels from the single-player/cooperative campaign and offers a surprisingly varied experience. The first level we played through saw us assuming the role of a Mantel trooper battling Promised Hand rebels in a jungle, the second was largely vehicle-based and set in a quarry, and the last--here comes the spoiler--pitted us against Mantel troopers in the role of a rebel.

There were single-player demo stations and also a group of four set up for cooperative play at the Ubisoft booth today, so, after watching a team of four players complete the demo, we opted to play solo so that we could see how effective our CPU-controlled comrades were.

Playing as a Mantel trooper for the first time, it was easy to see how you could become dependent on the "Nectar" drug that they use to augment their abilities. Enemies are easier to see, targeting becomes semiautomatic, you're able to move more quickly, and the only possible adverse side effects--which may or may not bother you--are that your vision becomes blurred, and as friends and enemies become indistinguishable, you'll literally lose control and have to watch helplessly as you shoot at anything at moves. Another odd but very much intentional side effect of Nectar is that it prevents you from seeing dead bodies--which, as we'll explain shortly, isn't necessarily a good thing in multiplayer games.

As we scoured the relatively small Jungle level, our comrades did a good job of following us when we were headed in the right direction, and also of hanging back or moving away from us when they wanted us to go elsewhere. They also did their fair share of killing, but not to the point that we ever felt inferior or unnecessary in any way. The most memorable set piece in the level saw us standing atop a cliff and watching Mantel's military aircraft drop bombs into another jungle area in an attempt to flush out the remaining rebels. They succeeded, and so by the time we had made our way down the cliff path, there were plenty of enemies waiting for us there.

The second level was set in and around a large quarry, and tasked us with driving a four-man all-terrain vehicle to the end of a long road in pursuit of a rebel boss named Skin Coat. He likes to skin his enemies and make coats from them, apparently, but it's highly unlikely that we were after the guy because of his questionable wardrobe. The Mantel vehicle was easy to drive and, in the cooperative session that we watched, it was well defended courtesy of two players riding shotgun and a third manning a gun turret. Unfortunately, our comrades in the single-player game weren't nearly as effective, and, before reaching the end of the level, we'd lost both of the guys riding shotgun. The body of the guy on the turret was hanging limply from the roof of the vehicle.

Our comrades weren't killed by the rebels chasing us in their own off-road vehicles. Rather, it was the large number of mines lining the quarry road that, in our rush to beat the level, we had failed to avoid. The mines aren't always easy to spot when you're racing along a bumpy road with enemies chasing you, of course. But, in another great advertisement for Nectar, taking the drug gives you something of a sixth sense and lets you see the explosions before they happen, albeit as a series of ripples through the air. Clouds of dust kicked up by all of the vehicles really added to the great look of the quarry level, though our sense of immersion was lost at one point when, after rolling our vehicle and being prompted to right it with a melee attack, we watched it roll around and defy the laws of physics as it desperately tried to land on its wheels while being hampered by the proximity of a wall.

Without wishing to give too much away about the game's plot (we're deliberately not revealing as much as we were told; you'll thank us later), there are levels in which you'll play as one of the Promised Hand rebels rather than as a Mantel trooper. The third and final level in the Games Convention demo was set in and around a run-down building that, judging by its appearance, may well have been a low-cost apartment complex at some point in its history. Accompanied by three other rebels, we were attacked by Mantel troopers at almost every turn, and we were thrilled to find that the rebels' lack of high-tech equipment is more than compensated for by some of the tricks that they have up their sleeves.

The most obvious rebel ability to mention, partly because it's performed using the same button that Mantel players use to administer Nectar, is playing dead. Mantel troopers aren't able to see dead bodies, so if your health gets low enough that all seems lost, playing dead will effectively make you invisible to nearby enemies while you wait for them to pass by. Another very neat trick is coating a grenade with Nectar from the tank of a fallen Mantel trooper so that it explodes in a cloud of the drug when you throw it. Any enemies caught in the cloud overdose almost immediately, causing them to become disoriented and, on some occasions, to start firing on other troopers. When coating your grenades with Nectar, you'll also automatically take the opportunity to do the same thing with your throwing knives, which can then be used to disorient enemies one at a time.

All of the aforementioned abilities will be available in competitive multiplayer modes that pit Mantel players against Promised Hand players. Ubisoft and Free Radical Design haven't said too much else about Haze's multiplayer content at this point, and after today's showing, we're more eager than ever to check it out. We'll bring you more information on Haze as soon as it becomes available.

[UPDATE] After playing through the Games Convention demo of Haze yesterday, today we met with Free Radical Design's David Doak and managed to get a little more info on the game. For starters, we've learned that Nectar is an even more potent drug than we realized. It doesn't just block out dead bodies from Mantel troopers' vision, it tricks the troopers into thinking that every battle they fight takes place on a sunny day in paradise. Promised Hand rebels on the same battlefield will see things as they really are, and could well be trudging through mud on a rainy day, or fighting in a village that's been all but destroyed in previous battles--none of which will be apparent to the troopers. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this difference in perceptions is that it will carry over to Haze's competitive multiplayer modes of play, so you'll get a very different experience depending on which faction you're playing as.

We also now know that the rebels have even more tricks at their disposal than we previously thought. Specifically, they'll be able to bury grenades that they've previously attached to Nectar administrators in order to booby-trap areas that Mantel troopers are likely to pass through. Rebels can also perform forward rolls to move around quickly while staying low and, as we've mentioned in previous coverage, they can steal weapons from Mantel troopers who have been stunned with a well-placed melee attack. In short, we're confident that rebels are going to be at least as much fun to play as the Mantel troopers, and we can't wait to check out the game's 24-player online play. Two-player split-screen support will also be included, by the way.

Disciples III: Renaissance
Other Names: Deisciples III, Disciples 3: Renaissance
Genre: Fantasy Turn-Based Strategy
Publisher: Strategy First
Developer: Akella / .dat
Platforms: PC Exclusive
Release Date: Q1 2008
Official Site: http://www.disciples3.ru/
Universe: Disciples: Sacred Lands (PC), Disciples: Sacred Lands Gold Edition (PC), Disciples II: Dark Prophecy (PC), Disciples II: Guardians of the Light (PC), Disciples II: Servants of the Dark (PC), Disciples II: Rise of the Elves (PC), Disciples II: Gold Edition (PC), Disciples II: Gallean's Return (PC), Disciples II DS (DS)

One of the many games being shown at this year's E3 is Disciples III, the third game in the turn-based strategy series. Unlike previous games in the series, Disciples III will be a fully 3D game with polygonal graphics to represent its huge monsters and warriors onscreen, though a representative from Akella, the game's developer, assured us that the game won't have particularly demanding system requirements.

Disciples III will feature more than 150 different "characters"--the war heroes, monsters, ghosts, and other beasties that can make up a war party in the game, and like in the previous games, the size of your war party will depend on your leader character's leadership skill. Apparently, some monsters in the game, such as dragons, will be absolutely huge, and will take up to 12 squares on the game's combat map, which has been retouched as a grid-based map divided up into two halves--yours and your opponents'.

We had a chance to see only the demonic legions of the damned faction in action, and they're as scaly and red-skinned as ever. However, the sequel will apparently ship with only three playable factions out of the box: the legions, the human empire, and the noble elves. Apparently, subsequent expansion packs will add additional races at a rate of one race per expansion--with any luck, we'll see the return of the original Disciples factions of the dwarven mountain clans and the undead horde.

The version of the game we saw was an extremely early one, so there was very little in the way of content to see. We did have a chance to see some parts of the overland map, which is now fully 3D, but is still populated by static monster spawns, various structures your parties can visit (or ransack), and still consists of different terrain types, which can be still converted to your faction's land type by using a rod-placing unit. We also had a chance to see the legions' home town, which was essentially a gigantic floating rock formation suspended above rivers of red molten lava. Both the overland view and the town view seem strikingly reminiscent of Heroes of Might and Magic V, though the towns in Disciples will have the familiar interface options to upgrade various portions of your stronghold to strengthen the specific unit types you choose; for instance, like in the previous games, you can choose to upgrade your melee units' barracks, which lets your basic melee units develop into a stronger character class once they gain experience levels. Upgrade options for melee, archery, magic, and miscellaneous classes at strongholds all appear to be intact.

Disciples III is currently being developed as a joint venture between Canadian publisher Strategy First, which is providing much of the game design, and Russian developer Akella, which is providing most of the production work. The game is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2008.

Lost: Via Domus
Other Names: Lost, Lost: The Videogame, Lost: The Way Home
Genre: Modern Action Adventure
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Platforms: PC Xbox 360 Playstation 3
Release Date: February 26, 2008
Official Site: http://lostgame.us.ubi.com/
Univers: ---

If you're a fan of the Lost TV show, you're no doubt aware that the long wait for season four is almost over. If you're also a fan of games, which is implied by the fact that you're reading this, you should likewise be aware that a game inspired by the popular show is scheduled for release next month. We've seen very little of Lost: Via Domus since it was announced more than 18 months ago, which is why we jumped at the chance to check out a near-finished Xbox 360 version of the game during a recent visit to Ubisoft's San Francisco office.

Set during the first two seasons of Lost, Via Domus is an adventure game in which you'll assume the role of an all-new character whose storyline intertwines with those of other castaways instantly recognizable from the show. Your name is Elliott, you were a passenger on the Oceanic 815 flight out of Sydney that crashed on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific, and--like oh so many game protagonists before you--you're suffering from amnesia. None of the other survivors on the island know who you are except for one, and given that he makes it clear early on that he dislikes (read: wants to kill) you, there's really only one person who can help you to remember, and that's you.

You'll piece together your fragmented memories via playable flashback sequences that involve more shooting than perhaps any other aspect of the game--with a camera, that is. It seems that your character was a photojournalist in his previous life, and after being afforded a look at torn pieces of a photograph, your goal in each flashback sequence is to take the photo depicted in them. For example, the first flashback takes place while flight 815 is boarding and tasks you with shooting a photo of the handcuffed fugitive Kate being handed a bottle of water by the marshal who's escorting her onto the plane. Having successfully completed that flashback--in which you'll also have an opportunity to look around the plane and at your precrash possessions--you'll remember seeing Kate's predicament in the present day and will have the option to broach the subject with her in a subsequent conversation.

It should come as no surprise to anyone even vaguely familiar with Lost that Via Domus isn't a shooter; there's not nearly enough ammunition on the island for that. Rather, Lost: Via Domus is a story-driven adventure game in which action scenes will serve to punctuate quests that primarily involve exploration and conversation. The only truly action-oriented sequence that we saw during our demo, in fact, was when we were chased through the jungle by the Black Smoke (it's exactly what it sounds like: a big, black cloud of smoke). The chase played out much like those you might have previously experienced in platform games: We used the analog stick to run and to avoid areas of mud and water that slowed us down, while two of the controller's face buttons were used to jump and to duck obstacles, respectively.

The start of your adventure more or less coincides with the start of season one. You find your way to the beach with some help from Vincent (that's the dog), and when you arrive you see that Jack (that's the doctor) is busy trying to help other would-be survivors. True to character, he wastes no time enlisting your help. You're asked to deal with a potentially dangerous fuel leak from the plane engine that's still roaring on the beach. This puzzle, like many others in the game, involves arranging differently shaped fuses on an electrical board to divert power where it's needed. Fuses, we're told, were scattered all over the island when Oceanic flight 815 crashed, and considering that these puzzles can be solved only if you have the correct fuses in your possession (it's highly unlikely that you ever won't), you'll do well to pick up any that you see.

Your primary objective in Lost: Via Domus, as is alluded to in the Latin portion of the title, is to find a way home. Of course, you'll be exploring plenty of locations along the way, and although the events of the game are set solely during seasons one and two of the TV show, there will be opportunities to visit locations that were never shown until season three. Furthermore, Lost: Via Domus will let you explore environments that have never been fully revealed in the show, including the Black Rock interior and the area behind the mysterious magnetic wall inside the Swan. Other locales that ended up not being story-critical in the game (we know of at least two, but don't want to spoil the surprises for you) can still be explored, though they're present only as hidden Easter eggs that you'll have to jump through hoops to reach.

Interestingly, Lost: Via Domus is divided up into episodes similarly to the show, even to the extent that each episode starts with a recap of the previous one and ends with a show-style cliffhanger. Besides being faithful to the experience of watching Lost on TV, the episodic structure of the game has afforded the development team a relatively easy way to have time pass on the island as your adventure progresses. For example, while playing through the first episode, you'll notice that the castaways aren't really functioning as a group yet and are wandering around the beach looking for possessions lost in the accident. If you attempt to talk to the character Sun, you'll also notice that she responds only in Korean. In later episodes, just like in the show, Sun will speak in English (she kept her language lessons a secret from her husband), and the beach is covered with makeshift shelters constructed from crash debris and other materials found on the island.

To talk too much about the events that we saw transpire during our demo would risk spoiling the story that's such a big part of Lost: Via Domus. We can tell you that you'll be doing a lot more with your favorite characters from the show than just talking to them, though. For instance, you'll get to go hunting for boars with Locke and, given that even the game doesn't include a map of the island, you can assist Sayid in his efforts to draw one. We can also tell you that you'll be spending plenty of time in darkened labyrinthine tunnels where, among other things, you'll need a good supply of flashlight batteries. Like everything else in the castaways' postcrash world, batteries are a valuable commodity that you'll need to either scavenge for yourself or acquire through trades with other characters. Practically every item that you pick up on the island has an approximate monetary value associated with it, so, for example, you might find that you're able to swap a $50 "Apollo" candy bar for any number of more commonly available (though much more useful) items.

We didn't get to spend nearly as much time with Lost: Via Domus as we would've liked on this occasion, particularly considering that this was our first opportunity to play it and the game's release is only a little more than a month away. We came away from our meeting with Ubisoft feeling confident that fans of Lost will get a kick out of joining their favorite characters on the island, but we're not entirely convinced that the game's conversations and exploration will be nearly as interesting for the rest of you. The action sequences and puzzles certainly have a more universal appeal, but those appear to have been designed with the TV audience rather than gamers in mind, and are unlikely to pose a significant challenge. We look forward to bringing you more information on Lost: Via Domus in the not-too-distant future.
