Secret Files 2
Other Names: Secret Files: Tunguska II, Secret Files: Tunguska 2, The Secret Files of Tunguska 2
Genre: Adventure
Publisher: Deep Silver
Developer: Fusionsphere Systems, Animation Arts
Platforms: PC Exclusive
Release Date: Q2 2008
Official SIte: http://www.secretfiles-game.com/
Universe: Secret Files: Tunguska (PC) (NDS) (Wii)

Feisty redhead Nina Kalenkov is back in Secret Files 2, the sequel to the PC point-and-click adventure game The Secret Files: Tunguska. Whereas the first game dealt with a mystery in which the Siberian region of Tunguska was engulfed in a mysterious inferno (also known as the Russian Roswell), this time it could be the end of the world. Literally.

The intro to the game shows an obviously agitated vicar hurrying to get inside the sanctuary of his church. However, before he can get there, he is shot with what looks like a poison dart by two men dressed in full military kit, complete with night-vision goggles. You're then given control of his friend, Bishop Parrey, who realises that he too is in grave danger. After controlling the Bishop for a brief time, the scene changes to transport you to much sunnier climes, and you are once again in control of the sassy Nina.

Secret Files 2 is set some time after the first game ended, although it's unclear right now from the section we played quite how much longer. Having split with Max Gruber, the guy she hooked up with in the previous adventure, Nina's decided to go on a relaxing cruise to get over the whole thing. That wouldn't make for a very interesting game, and naturally things don't really go down as planned; she's soon dealing with a motley crew of weird shipmates and a series of peculiar goings-on. You can bet your life that it will all end up having something to do with the death of the priest shown at the beginning--but just how, who knows?

Nina doesn't suffer this particular ship of fools gladly, and she has plenty of comebacks and quips for the bizarre assortment of weirdos who cross her path. There's lots of humour thrown in as well, and in the space of the preview levels that we saw, we caught a nod to Monty Python, along with a sly reference to virtual Tomb Raider star Lara Croft.

The interface is much the same as in the previous game, with the inventory items shown as icons at the bottom of the screen, along with an options button to save and load. The same option to reveal all the items and people that can be interacted with, along with all available exits, is back there as well. Some people consider this feature tantamount to cheating, but you don't have to use it.

Nina still has her trusty journal on hand, which will fill up with notes and important plot information as you go along, so those with short attention spans can be sure to keep on top of it all. Flipping to the end of the journal will also give you the option to get a hint, although sometimes they just seem to tell you what you already know you need to do, rather than give you any help with actually working out how to do it.

Items and people can be examined using right-click, and if there's an option to interact with them in some way, the cursor will change to show you a left-click option too. Objects can also be combined, for example, to make yourself a cunning disguise.

Graphically, the game looks as good as, if not better than, the first in the series, with a series of detailed prerendered backgrounds serving as pleasing eye candy to explore. When Nina talks to someone, or in certain other situations (for instance, when she's peeping through a window), the camera will pan into a 3D close-up with the character. The voice acting is a mixed bag--some characters are fine, whilst others are truly awful. Call to the witness stand the fake Southern American accent.

The puzzles we played seemed to be mainly inventory-based, solved by picking up everything that's lying around; if you're really stumped, methodically trying to use and combine everything with everything else will eventually move you along.

Secret Files 2 is currently expected to be ready for UK release in Q3 2008.

Lost Empire: Immortals
Genre: Sci-Fi Turn-Based Strategy
Publisher: Paradox Interactive
Developer: Pollux Gamelabs
Platforms: PC Exclusive
Release Date: March 2008
Official Site: http://www.paradoxplaza.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=272&Itemid=224
Universe: Lost Empire (PC)

The turn-based space strategy genre may not be as large as it once was, but it still has a devoted following. The genre was defined early on by such games as 1993's Master of Orion and, more recently, by the Galactic Civilizations franchise. The basic formula throughout all these games is similar: start with a single planet, build fleets to explore the galaxy, colonize star systems, research new technologies, and wage war on your interstellar neighbors. Now comes Lost Empire: Immortals, a new turn-based space strategy game from Danish developer Pollux Gamelabs. This is an ambitiously big game, with galactic maps that have as many as 5,000 star systems. At the same time, it looks like it will bring an interesting new take on the genre.

The game's backstory is a bit complex. Basically, the galaxy was once ruled by a race of immortal beings. Then, a devastating war erupted, leaving only two immortals alive. By the time of the game, the two immortals have become rivals and look to recruit mortal races to their cause. You play as one of six species (one of them is human) as you attempt to build an interstellar empire. In the game's story mode, you'll have a chance to pursue missions given to you by one of the immortal beings. The story mode will build throughout the course of the game, and eventually you'll get to a point where you'll either have to ally with the immortal beings or defy them, which means you'll be in for a big fight. However, there will also be a sandbox mode that will let you play Lost Empire as a traditional 4X game. (4X stands for explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate; this is the basic formula of many turn-based strategy games.)

When you start a game, you select various parameters, such as what race to play as, what special abilities or bonuses to start with, the size of the galaxy, and so on. Galaxy sizes range from small, which are suitable for a handful of races, to absolutely stupendous. Of course, the larger the galaxy size, the longer the game will play out. A game on the largest game map, with 5,000 stars, could take weeks or longer, whereas a smaller scale game could take hours or a few days.

You start with a single home world, a scout fleet, and a colonization fleet. Your fleets can only go beyond a certain range from your star systems, and it's important to colonize nearby stars to therefore extend the range of your fleets. Lost Empire features a free movement system, so you can send fleets anywhere in the interstellar medium; they're not restricted from moving strictly between star systems like they are in many games. The scale of the game is one year per turn, and the game features simultaneous resolution. Basically, you plot out your fleet movements each turn, giving waypoints, destinations, and orders to your fleets. When you hit the turn button, the game resolves all faction turns simultaneously, and you see how everything unfolds. Then, a new turn begins, and you can adjust existing orders or issue new ones.

When you colonize a planet, you can designate it to specialize in trade, defense, farming, mining (for minerals, the primary resource in the game), or construction. This is designed to keep micromanagement to a minimum because you could eventually create an empire of 50 to 100 star systems in a large game. Star systems can also help you churn out new ships. There are eight hull types in the game, ranging from scout and patrol craft to lumbering battleships and stationary (save for one race) starbases. Ship design will let you take the latest research that you've conducted and swap in different components, such as weapons or engines.

It'll be important to create balanced fleets, with a nice mix of small and large vessels. That's because you can designate doctrines for your ships to use. For example, you might want to send smaller and faster vessels darting around to attack the enemy's flank while your big, lumbering warships go up the middle. Battles themselves are not interactive once they start. You can just get the results automatically presented to you or you can go in and watch the battle unfold. For example, you can move and zoom the camera around to perhaps take a picture or record some video of the action.

War is just diplomacy taken to the extremes, though. There are definitely milder forms of diplomacy in the game. You can establish embassies, form trade pacts, perform espionage or sabotage, and more. There are also minor races throughout the galaxy. These are smaller factions that lack the ambition and drive to become major empires. How you deal with them is up to you; you can conquer them, or you can try to bribe them. This opens up a nice way of harassing your rivals because you can bribe the minor races on their borders, basically fueling a low-level conflict.

Finally, there's an interesting leader system in the game. All races have a chance to recruit leaders and great leaders each turn. These are basically specialists that you can assign to give you a boost in military, economic, or agricultural affairs. The kicker is that all leaders will eventually age and die, so you've got to use them wisely. Because a turn equals one year, a human leader may stick around for only about 50 turns, but some alien races live much longer, and their leaders can survive for hundreds of turns.

Based on all that, Lost Empire looks like a pretty intriguing game for space strategy fans. It's a large game with a lot of potential, and the idea of being able to play an epic-sized space strategy is tempting. Lost Empire will also ship with a multiplayer suite, but we didn't get a chance to check it out, and it sounds like the single-player will have plenty for you to manage. Pollux is busy finishing the game, and it's scheduled to ship at the end of March.

Bionic Commando Rearmed
Genre: 2D Platformer
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: GRIN
Platforms: PC Xbox 360 Playstation 3
Release Date: Q2 2008
Official Site: http://www.bioniccommando.com/
Universe: Bionic Commando (PC) (NES) (GB) (C64) (ARC) (CPC), Bionic Commando: Elite Forces (GBC), Bionic Commando (PC) (X360) (PS3)

Capcom's original Bionic Commando remains one of gaming's genuine classics. A kinetic ballet of gunning, running and gymnastic supremacy, thanks to the titular hero's Bionic Arm - all seemingly lost in the digital mists of time. So when it was announced that the franchise was to return to gaming in the shape of a brand new all-singing, all-dancing instalment on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, the hearts of a whole generation of gamers were stirred.

Now though, we can reveal first details on Capcom's previously top secret cousin, Bionic Commando Rearmed - a downloadable remake and reimagining of the original classic, set to appear on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, replete with new visuals and extra features. We spoke to Ben Judd, producer at Capcom Japan, and Simon Viklund, creative director at GRIN, the team responsible for Bionic Commando Rearmed, to get the low-down on the king of the swinger's return.

Amazingly, it's been some twenty years since the definitive versions of Bionic Commando landed in the arcade and latterly on the NES. However, affection for Nathan Spencer, the game's hero, clearly still runs high, with Bionic Commando earning itself a place at number 95 in IGN's recent 100 games of all time. Bionic Commando Rearmed looks set to take its cues from the NES version of the title, Simon Viklund noting that, "The arcade version may have been the first, but there's no doubt that the NES version is the one that deserves to be revisited." The home version of Bionic Commando refined gameplay, introducing a more flexible Bionic Arm that allowed for more acrobatic play. As Judd recalls, "The NES version is the one that is the most different from the rest, and it is also regarded by many to be the best. The NES version also had a more unified and understandable set of enemies and a memorable story line."

Ah, the storyline. The original NES iteration of Bionic Commando had, in its original Japanese guise, a cast of futuristic Nazis standing between the hero and the final boss, an 8-bit effigy of Adolf Hitler. For its Western localization, more explicit references to the Third Reich were removed, with the Nazis referred to as Badds, and Hitler acquiring the nom de guerre of Master D.

It's these latter cast of rogues that's set to make a return: "Since Bionic Commando Rearmed is an homage to the original, it will closely follow the story of the original," says Judd, "Imperials? Yes. Master D. Ohhh yes. However, now that we don't have the same memory limitations that the 8-bit game did, we have fleshed out the story quite a bit. Without altering the original story, we have added some new background information that helps tie Bionic Commando Rearmed to its next-gen big brother." As you can see in our trailer below, the remake also retains some of the more eccentric elements of its forefather - the immortal line "Get the heck out of here you nerd!" is present in all its absurdist glory.

When Bionic Commando was originally released in 1988, it vied for the loose change of arcade-goers amidst a cacophony of other side-scrolling action titles. To stand out from the opposition, Capcom needed to come up with something unique and up their bionic sleeves they had the perfect answer – the Bionic Arm. Enabling players to latch onto platforms and bound across the screen, the Bionic Arm allowed a freestyle approach to tackling levels. It was a refreshing gameplay addition and, just as Half-Life 2's gravity gun helped elevate it above first-person rivals, so Bionic Commando's Bionic Arm ensured a fresh and exciting experience.

Capcom's original Bionic Commando team has moved on, but Judd reassures that, "We have taken special steps to get feedback and opinions from some of the staff that were working at Capcom at the same time on other titles in order to maintain the 'classic style' of gaming that we feel Bionic Commando Rearmed needed."

But with such a solid backbone, were Bionic Commando Rearmed producers tempted to tamper? Judd acknowledges the strength of the original game, but can see room for improvement: "We felt the original could be improved without straying from the basic concept. In the original NES game, apart from hooking onto platforms and swinging or climbing up on them, you could also punch enemies with the bionic arm, deflect projectiles with it, pick up items and pull yourself along the ground towards fixed objects. We have expanded upon this array of moves and given the player the ability to lift up non-fixed objects – such as enemies and barrels – and throw them, as well as connect and pull on handles in the surroundings to trigger door mechanics or unscrew bolts that keep obstacles in place."

It's not just the Bionic Arm that's getting a makeover in Bionic Commando Rearmed though - Nathan Spencer's arsenal also gets an overhaul, with the introduction of grenades and upgradable firepowe. Judd highlights the newly available shotgun, noting that, "In the original 8-bit version, if the player ever got stuck hanging beneath a platform and had stopped swinging you were forced to either climb on to the platform (if you were attached to a ceiling there was no place to climb up to), or just fall, which often meant you would die. However, in Rearmed, if you are in this same situation and fire the shotgun, the recoil will kick-start your swing - so you don't get stuck, and have fewer 'forced deaths'."

Judging from the footage released so far, the additions don't go against the grain of the original Bionic Commando and, indeed, look to add a little to the original formula. The graphical overhaul also has strong echoes of the Nintendo home version and, as Viklund notes, "it undeniably leans more towards the NES version with its vivid color palette and straight angles but it's hard to make a block-by-block remake of a platform game and stray away from the visual foundations of the platform genre: the right-angled platform." Another great asset to the remake is the fantastic character design from Toshiaki Mori - one of Capcom Japan's leading artists - that act as a bridge between old-school and current-gen.

Finally, with Bionic Commando joining other arcade classics such as Tron and Contra on Xbox Live, we asked Judd what classic Capcom titles he would like to see available in the future: "Personally, I'd love to see Forgotten Worlds, Gunsmoke, Magic Sword, and our Dungeons and Dragons beat 'em up. Capcom really has a fantastic library of classic titles that few other companies can rival." And all we can do is look toward the videogame gods and pray that Strider gets the HD treatment some time soon.

Bionic Commando Rearmed looks to act as both a teaser for the current-generation game and a reminder of what made the original so great in the first place. What we've seen so far retains the majesty of the original while incorporating some welcome gameplay tweaks - and it's going to make a fine addition to both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network when it hits this spring.

FIFA Street 3
Genre: Sports - Soccer
Publisher: EA Sports / EA
Developer: EA Canada
Platforms: Xbox 360 Playstation 3 Nintendo DS
Release Date: February 18, 2008
Official Site: http://www.fifastreet3.com/
Universe: FIFA Street (PS2) (XBOX) (GC), FIFA Street 2 (XBOX) (PS2) (PSP) (GC) (NDS)

England and Spain loved it. Germany, not so much. We're referring to the new and elongated character models in the upcoming FIFA Street 3 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. After all, one look at the new, even-taller-and-lankier Peter Crouch in the game and it was obvious that the developers behind the game at EA Sports have flexed their humor muscles when it came to portraying some of the biggest athletic stars in the world.

When the preliminary character models went around to FIFA officials and national team players from around the world, that sense of humor didn't always come through. As producers explained to us today while demonstrating the game, the new character models acted as a sort of impromptu litmus test of the senses of humor for various countries. English and Spanish players immediately took to the new character look of the likes of Ronaldinho, David Beckham, and Wayne Rooney (who had one request for his in-game avatar: Make me thinner.). It wasn't exactly the same story with the Germans, however, who initially thought the caricaturelike designs were making fun of their Teutonic heroes. It wasn't until EA showed off gameplay--and the cartoonish players doing the spectacular leaps, jumps, and kicks that are a hallmark of the FIFA Street series--that the German players "got it" and got on board with Street 3's look.

That look feels like a natural evolution from FIFA Street 2, released in 2006, albeit with a brighter, more colorful palette. Most of the pitches you play on are still in urban areas, but the dark environments of Street 2 have been replaced with luminous environs that look more friendly and inviting. There are seven environments to play on in all, from a sunny beach court to a soccer pitch situated on an oil rig.

While the characters look a good deal different than in previous games, the amped-up animations that series fans have come to expect have been taken to the next stage in FIFA Street 3. Influences (not to mention motion capture) for character movement came for everything from gymnastics to martial arts, and, naturally, traditional street soccer moves. The same branching animation system that has helped power games like NBA Street Homecourt, NBA Live 08, and FIFA 08 is also behind the moves in Street 3, giving you the ability to quickly and naturally break animations on the fly--meaning you'll be able to pass or shoot when you want, where you want, no matter what trick your controlled player is attempting. Different abilities will also be available to different player types--FIFA Street 3 categorizes players along four types categories: enforcer, trickster, playmakers, and finishers.

When it comes to controls, looking good on the pitch won't be hard. You'll pass and shoot the ball with the A and B buttons, respectively (or X and circle in the PS3 version of the game). Pulling tricks is as easy as moving the right stick in any direction, and flicking and juggling the ball is handled with the Y button. There's an element of timing to juggles that brings some additional skill to the process; to keep the ball bouncing on your foot or head, you have to press the button at the right time. In addition, holding the Y button down will result in a higher juggle--for example, allowing you to move the ball from your foot to your head.

But the basics will only get you so far in the game; sooner or later you'll have to explore the new and improved gamebreaker system in Street 3. By performing tricks and juggles, you'll build up your gamebreaker meter. Once it's filled, you can press the right bumper to enter gamebreaker mode, where your moves will be fancier (including some truly cool flips over your opponent) and your shots will be both more accurate and more powerful. One nice touch is that you can keep a gamebreaker going by performing tricks as you go, essentially extending its life by playing with style. Unlike in previous Street games, a gamebreaker shot won't necessarily mean a guaranteed goal; you'll still have to choose your spot if you want to get it past the goalkeeper.

Speaking of the keepers, the team behind Street 3 has worked to improve the net-minders too. That includes more realistic artificial intelligence, plus new animations that reflect that a good portion of the shots in Street 3 will come from close to the net. As a result, a keeper will be more apt to slap the ball away (keeping the ball in play) than necessarily catching it or wrapping it up. The result is a quicker style of play with fewer breaks in the action.

FIFA Street 3 will include a number of ways to get into instant footy action--from timed games, score limit games, or games that will only score goals made off of headers and volleys. Your main port of call in the single-player game, however, will be the FIFA Street Challenge. Here, you will start with a team of decent players and will take on a variety of different squads as you look to increase your team's reputation as you go. There's no create-a-player here; instead, you'll choose from several teams (including those you unlock by winning matches). These squads might be composed of current and past FIFA legends, or all of players of a certain category (for example, a team made entirely of enforcers). Once you've beaten a team you can use them in a future challenge.

FIFA Challenge might be the heart of the single-player game, but sooner or later you'll want to take FIFA Street 3 online, where a number of modes will be waiting for you, including playground picks (also available in the offline game). Here, you can handpick a team of your favorite FIFA players--from the nearly 300 found in the game--and then take them online against an opponent. If that sounds like fun, check out the world challenge mode: Here, you play as your favorite national team (choosing from the 18 available in the game). Servers on the EA side will be keeping track of total wins and losses for each country in the game, and you'll be able to check out those overall results in the game. Nothing like a little nationalism to fuel that footy fever, right?

So with the mode descriptions out of the way, how does the game play? So far, it feels very much like previous Street games in that it's easy to pick up and play. The stick-based trick mechanic is easy to learn, though it sometimes feels like passes aren't going in the direction you want them to. Scoring goals is easy from the get-go (which is probably a good thing); playing defense, on the other hand, can be a bit of a struggle. Sure, this is an arcade soccer game, but the tackles (of which there are two variations: normal and aggressive) both feel a bit ineffective. On the plus side, the physics of the ball and players seems to be very good--we had several shots by the opposition saved simply because we managed to get a player in the way of the ball.

In all, FIFA Street 3 looks like breezy fun on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, even if it is very reminiscent of previous games. The online play, a new addition for the series, looks to be the feature that will keep people coming back to the concrete pitch once it's released in February. Stay tuned for a full review.
