Van Persie: Afobe has everything to become a great

Last week Benik Afobe told the Arsenal website that Robin van Persie had taken him under his wing during his lengthy injury, advising him on motivation techniques and checking on his progress.

While on one level it appears we have a captain willing to do right by his squad, no matter their experience, on another it appears the motivation to help his young teammate is not just based on a sense of responsibility. Robin seems to truly rate Afobe as a footballer…really, really rate.

Speaking to the Arsenal official matchday programme ahead of Sunday’s tonking of the Spuds, the Dutchman spoke in glowing terms about Afobe’s potential having overcome his groin problem.

“I was delighted to see Benik Afobe back in the Reserves on Tuesday night, scoring against Norwich. Six months is a long time out at his age, especially when he did really well with the first team over pre-season making fast progress.

“He’s returned impressively though – I watched him in training ten days ago while I was doing my warm down and he looked really strong and quick, a proper English striker who holds the ball up well and works very hard.

“When you’re young you just want to be playing, improving your game and making your career, and he was denied that for a long time.”

At only 19-years-old, and with an impressive loan spell at Huddersfield Town under his belt, it wasn’t surprising to see Arsene Wenger hand the teenager a new contract in the summer. It now looks as though his next challenge is to break into the first team.

“To come back as he’s doing is tremendous – he’s a fantastic lad, a really good character to have in the squad and a player I genuinely rate, so I’m really proud of him,” continued Van Persie.

“He absolutely loves his football and treats it very seriously. That’s the main thing for a young footballer – if you really love the game like he does then you will make it, and he has everything to become a great player.”

Now don’t get us wrong, Arseblog News is not suggesting that a few warm words from the captain makes a player.

We’ve seen plenty of young attackers steal the headlines at youth and reserve level in the past, the likes of Stokes, Watt, Simpson and Lupoli all spring to mind, but none have gone on to make it.

That being said, you can’t help but stand up and take notice when someone of Van Persie’s stature uses his programme notes ahead of the biggest game of the season to talk up Afobe.

Let’s hope the lad can live up to his obvious potential. As it stands he’s only got to prove himself more useful than Chamakh and Park to bag himself a spot on the bench…can’t be too hard. Surely?

Former referee Graham Poll criticises Bale dive

Former referee Graham Poll criticised Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale's 'dive' in Sunday's north London derby and called for the use of retrospective punishments.

Poll plied his trade as a referee for over 25 years and was active in Premier League, Championship and even World Cup matches. He is strongly against players utilising dishonest means to fool referees in order to earn an advantage in crucial moments in a match.

In the match between Arsenal and Tottenham on Sunday, which Arsenal eventually won 5-2 after being down by two goals after 34 minutes, Gareth Bale was released by a wonderful through-ball by Luka Modric and he surged clear of Kieran Gibbs and appeared to have poked the ball past Arsenal keeper Wojech Szczesny.

But instead of chasing the ball, the Welshman fell to the ground seeming to indicate that he was fouled by the defender or the goalkeeper preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Poll wrote in the Daily Mail: "At full speed and from his angle, Dean felt sure enough to give Tottenham their penalty after 34 minutes when Bale went down attempting to go past Wojciech Szczesny in the Arsenal goal.

"If it was a foul it should have been a red card for the keeper and perhaps Dean had doubts over the accuracy of his decision and left him on the pitch.

"Replays showed that Bale had not been fouled but I would not blame Dean for being fooled."

He called for the use of retrospective punishment for diving incidents. The FA rules only carry out retrospective punishment for behaviour that brings the game into disrepute usually involving violent deliberate action between players of two opposing teams.

"[People should] rather look at the conduct of Bale and plead that the FA introduce retrospective punishment for diving," Poll insisted.

"This would not need a change to laws of the game, nor permission from the IFAB or FIFA as it is up to each governing body to determine their own disciplinary code."

Overall, Poll was happy with referee Mike Dean's display in what was an action-packed matched between the two London sides.

"The highlight for me was the way he controlled the game, fairly and with strength but understanding and I trust his bosses will agree."

Mike Dean gave a total of six yellow cards and one red card to Scott Parker in a fiery derby fixture. The referee has given, on average, just over three yellow cards per game in the 21 matches that he has been in charge so far. Only Mike Jones and Phil Dowd have given more than four yellow cards per game amongst the referees that have officiated 15 games or more this season.

Theo la viteza insa cu driblingurile mai rau, pe cind Robin la viteza nu prea, in schimb driblinguri minunate

Si ce am observat... aduceti-va aminte asisturile lui Theo pentru Robin, practic toate au fost pe jos si din careul portarului (mai ca linga poarta). Stim cu totii cit de rau el era in ultimele meciuri pe flang (da chiar si meciul trecut), ba pierdea mingea aiurea, driblinguri in genere nu-s, crossurile nu se primeau, centrarile mai bine tac. In schimb Ox cu toate aestea se ispraveste de minune

Da in meciul cu Scums. De unde au venit ambele goluri a lui Theo ? Din centru. Anume era in pozitia de atacant si la fel a finisat-o ca un atacant pur

Primul gol (care i-a dat assist Robin), ce frumos la viteza a cistigat mingea (si anume pe centru si nu pe flang), si ce finisari... good old Theo, right ?

Intradevar ar trebui cel putin un meci de incercat asa o varianta... sunt sigur ca va lucra

"Арсенал" готов крупно потратиться на удержание Ван Перси

С приближением концовки сезона "Арсенал" начинает готовить своему капитану Робину Ван Перси роскошное предложение о новом контракте, сообщает Daily Mirror.
"Арсенал", в понедельник объявивший о прибыли в размере 49.5 миллионов фунтов за полгода, готов раскошелиться, чтобы удержать своего ведущего игрока.

Сообщается, что Ван Перси будет предложен более выгодный контракт, нежели имелись у Тьерри Анри и Цеска Фабрегаса, самых высокооплачиваемых игроков клуба в прошлом. "Канониры" надеются, что такими роскошными для клуба условиями они смогут отбить интерес "Барселоны", "Реала", "Милана" и "Ювентуса" к своему капитану.

Совершенно точно зарплата 28-летнего голландца превысит 100 тыс. фунтов в неделю. Кроме того Робина ждет разовый бонус в 4 млн. при заключении сделки. Переговоры начнутся сразу после завершения сезона.

Также в ближайшие недели "Арсенал" начнет переговоры с вингером Тео Уолкоттом о новом контракте.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf have some comforting words for Arsenal fans from Robin van Persie today. Fresh from their excellent win at the weekend, the Dutch striker has taken steps to calm fears that he's on his way out of the Emirates.

"I sit there for eight years and I'm proud. At the end of the season I sit down with the trainer and the president. Then we make a cup of coffee all together. I am a true Gunner. I love this club and that's no secret."

Ellen White, from Arsenal Ladies, has been voted England Women's Player of the Year for 2011.

Arsenal could be tempted to part with Marouane Chamakh after receiving a £6million offer from Fiorentina. Chamakh was the subject of a loan bid from the Italian side in January but Arsenal turned down the offer as they needed him for cover.
