Champions League: CSKA Moscow v Arsenal - Preview

Moscow has never been kind to Arsenal. Their record reads three games, one draw and two defeats. Terry Neill’s side were beaten 3-2 here back in September 1982 while Arsène Wenger’s version have twice ventured East to the Russian capital in recent years. First, they were humbled 4-1 by Spartak in icy conditions back in November 2000 then they grabbed a drab 0-0 draw at Lokomotiv three years ago.

Russian football can not be considered among the continent’s finest. Tonight’s opponents CSKA became their nation’s first winner of a European trophy when they lifted the Uefa Cup in 2005. However while the nature of the football in this country has changed dramatically in recent years, the harshness of the conditions around this time of year remains unaltered.

To put it bluntly, Arsenal may have won their last six games but Moscow in October is never an easy proposition.

“I have always liked Russian football and the technical way they play,” said Wenger. “The last time we played here in Moscow was against Lokomotiv and it was 0-0. We did miss some chances that night but it is very difficult for any team to win away from home in the Champions League, and we have a good percentage, around 35 per cent wins.

“We will try very hard to do that here, but it is always very difficult. We know we will be almost through if we win so this is a big game for us. But CSKA Moscow are a tough opponent.

“They have a traditional Russian organisation in defence plus a Brazilian flair. I rate Daniel Carvalho and Wagner Love. The mixture seems to work well in their League and in Europe too.

"I spoke with the chairman of Porto after our game and he told me that CSKA Moscow were a good team. They have also beaten Hamburg at home, so it will be an interesting game because when we come away, we try to play.

“The fact that it is cold should not affect us. But CSKA like to play good technical football, so I hope they have taken care of the pitch."

The only surprise in Wenger’s travelling party was the inclusion of Denilson, an 18-year-old Brazilian midfielder signed from Sao Paulo on transfer deadline day. Julio Baptista (hamstring), Freddie Ljungberg (calf), Emmanuel Eboue (knee), Abou Diaby (ankle) and Lauren (knee) are still injured. Philippe Senderos is fit and gained some much-needed match sharpness in the Reserves on Monday. Gael Clichy has travelled but, as on Saturday, is likely to start as a substitute. Wenger has said his re-introduction after a nagging foot problem will be slow and sure.

Wenger started using a new formation at this point in the Champions League last season and it proved successful. It was 4-3-3 when Arsenal had possession and 4-5-1 when they did not. He has reverted to the more traditional 4-4-2 for much of the time in the Premiership this season and was due to make a late decision over the way his side would line up this evening.

“It depends sometimes how I feel the opponent will play, and which way we are comfortable,” said Wenger. “It also is about which players I decide to rest, some are more suited to 4-3-3 and some to 4-4-2. Basically the quality of my players will decide the system we play.”

24' Johan Djourou lunges in on Dudu on the edge of the box and Carvalho smashes home the resulting free-kick from 20 metres. The shot is in the middle of the goal but Lehmann is simply beaten for pace.
