FANCY TAKING COMMAND OF your own fleet of space ships, going forth and meeting new alien races and zapping them to extinction?

Well the latest game in the Imperium Galactica series, titled Imperium Galactica III: Genesis, may be just the ticket for you. More of the same you may ask? It appears not. With a change of developer (from Digital Reality to Philos Labs – both Hungarian developers) there has been a radical change to the game engine. Yes, they will be building on traditions of it's predecessors, however the emphasis is going to move from strategic micro-management of planets and colonies into more tactical space combat. To achieve this they have developed what looks like a brilliant 3D engine with superb graphics and backgrounds reminiscent of Homeworld. They have also put what appears to have been a lot of work into the flight models of individual ships.

Expect a great Science Fiction story line that will take place in our neck of the woods. The player will join the story in the year 2100, and play through 250 years of the history of mankind. Without giving to much away the story is that an alien race conquers the earth, but a small and desperate group of humans succeeds in escaping. This will be the age of conquering the universe and establishing contact with intelligent alien races (in other words a typical night out on the town).

Here is the load out promised in the game:-

# A campaign with six parallel story lines

# 30 detailed missions and random missions

# Real-time space battles of at film quality (see the screen shots! – wow)

# Physically correct flight models

# 100 planets in 20 solar systems (as well as asteroid zones, black holes, wormholes)

# 6 different alien races

# Individually configurable spaceships (weapons, sources of energy, engines, battle features, target features configurable for each individual weapon, formation features, shields etc)

# Different colonies (management, research, development, industry, shipbuilding)

# More than 50 alien and human NPC characters to bring life to the story line

They have also promised an audio/graphic effect whereby the closer you get to a ship on screen the louder the speakers vibrate and the more the screen shakes (this will give the neighbours something to think about!). There will be 5 main ship classes, with each ship being able to be configured with different weapons and specialist systems.

Battles will be fought in real-time, however the game engine will allow you to pause the game and issue orders while in pause mode. Coupled with the ability to set the difficulty level and also including a tutorial mode, Philos Labs are gearing the game to be be accessible to players of all skill levels. Don't expect planet based battles in the game though, as the it will be firmly centred around space combat. Saying that, there will be the ability to utilise planet based defence systems. You will also still have to look at colonising planets, developing technologies and undertaking diplomacy with the aliens.

Overall Imperium Galactica III looks like it will be visually brilliant and if the game-play matches this we are likely to see one of the years top games in the space genre. The only drawback is that there is no multiplayer planned at this stage (which we hope will change!).
