It's been a magical month for Raúl

The name Raúl González is synonymous with records. Ever since breaking into Real Madrid and Spanish football, the forward has smashed scoring charts, played in more matches than most, and collected an enviable quantity of trophies, including the Gold Medal of Sports Merit. This month Raúl celebrates the anniversary of his Real Madrid and Spanish national team debut, two teams for which his stats speak for themselves.

A walk through the League
One hundred ninety goals, 453 matches, and 37,438 minutes played sum up Raúl's 13 years donning the Real Madrid shirt. The numbers that the Madridista captain has put up speak words of this talented footballer who is considered one of the best Spanish players ever.

A perfect example of the traditional values of Madridismo, Raúl personifies dedication, hard work, and naturalness each time he dons the Real Madrid shield, a shirt he swears will be the only one he ever wears in Spain. What's more, the same spirit with which he battles for every ball until the final whistle hasn't kept him from being an icon of fair play. In fact, Raúl went almost three years without being booked.
His love affair with Real Madrid's First Team began more than a decade ago -29 October 1994- when Jorge Valdano gave him the nod in La Romareda. Nearly 13 years have passed during which the Madridista forward has reaped both personal and team rewards and filled the trophy cases with titles: 5 Leagues, 3 Champions Leagues, 3 Spanish Super Cups, 1 European Super Cup, and 2 InterContinental Cups.

His keen sense of scoring has led him to two Pichichi trophies, the first in 1999 after scoring 25 goals and the second in 2001 when he finished with 24. Based on what we've seen so far this season, there is no reason to believe that he can't be the top scorer in the Spanish League for the third time. Raúl scored the first Madridista goal this season in Matchday 1 against Atlético Madrid. He also found the back of the net against Villarreal and then scored his third of the year during Betis' visit to the Bernabéu.

All-time Champions League scorer
One record that number '7' is most proud of is that of all-time top scorer in the Champions League. Many of his 57 goals in Europe's most prestigious competition have counted as game winners or, at least, gotten the fans involved as the 12th man. Raúl has also played more Champions League games than anyone else (112). He is followed by former Madridistas Roberto Carlos (109) and David Beckham (106).

Raúl has been named the best forward of the Champions League three times: 2000 (10 goals), 2001, (7 goals), and 2003 (9 goals). He was also the top scorer in two straight campaigns: 1999/00 when he scored ten times to lead Real Madrid to their ninth European Cup and one year later when he struck gold seven times.

Legendary Spain captain
Raúl hasn't held back when it comes to international appearances either. He made his Spain debut on 9 October 1996 against the Czech Republic. Since then, he has 65 victories, 23 defeats, and 14 draws under his belt.

His 102 caps are more than any active player and he is the second-most capped Spanish player of all time after Zubizarreta. His closest pursuers include footballers of the likes of Hierro, Camacho, Gordillo, and Butragueño. Additionally, he is the only active player to have participated in 11 World Cup matches.

But that's not all. Raúl is also the all-time top scorer for the Spanish national team. His 44 strikes are more than Hierro, Butragueño, Di Stéfano, and Santillana.

Internationally reknown
In 1999, Raúl received the third-most votes for the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Two years later he was presented with the Silver Ball as the second-best player in the world. But the most meaninful honour Raúl has received is perhaps the Royal Order's Golden Medal for Sports Merit in 2006.
