Van Persie - It was the best goal of my career

Four minutes after the interval the Dutchman settled a tight London derby by sending a vicious volley past Scott Carson from Emmanuel Eboue’s pinpoint cross.

“I have seen the goal on TV and yes it was my best goal,” said Van Persie afterwards. “Before that there was the goal against Blackburn but now there is this one.

“It was a fantastic cross and there was a little bit of a curve at the end. When I saw the ball coming to me I was just focused on one thing — hit it straight and in the heart of the ball. When I did that I thought I had put it a bit high. I thought at first the ball would go over the bar. At the end it came just under the bar.

“It was a fantastic goal but it was important as well. That is my feeling about today. Liverpool lost 2-0 and Chelsea dropped some points as well. It was a great goal but it was important for the team.”

Arsene Wenger has admitted he does not know his way around London after a decade managing in the capital. The Frenchman said he feels as though he lives on "an island called Arsenal" and had not been affected by English values.

"If you want a guided tour of London, don't ask me. You would get lost. If you took me into the centre, I wouldn't know how to get out," he said.

The Gunners boss told l'Equipe that, rather than becoming anglicised, he had only been immersed in the values of Arsenal, and that these values prevented the club from losing its roots despite its paucity of home-grown players.

"It is a miracle, but English values have survived. I would contend that, wherever you come from, first of all you become somebody from Arsenal," he said.

"There is a cultural adjustment. When I was in Japan, I accepted Japanese values. Here, it is the culture of Arsenal that colonises you. Quite simply, you place yourself in it.

"I am French. I have not become English. I only have the impression of living on an island called Arsenal."

Wenger has just two English players in his first-team squad - Theo Walcott and Justin Hoyte - and readily accepted that the explosion of foreign influence in the Premiership would be part of his legacy.

"I would say the internationalisation of English football [has marked my reign]. When I arrived here I was like an intruder in the British world. Now I am picking teams without a single Englishman. The managers are foreign, the owners are foreign."

The 56-year-old also claimed his side could win the Premiership this season, and that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had a tough job juggling his big-name star players.

"Chelsea can be beaten this year in England, I am convinced of that. And I think that we can beat them.

"It is not easy for Mourinho, who is under great pressure with his superstars.

"I have the pleasure of watching players blossom like [Emmanuel] Eboué, [Johan] Djourou, [Mathieu] Flamini, [Philippe] Senderos."
