TGS 2007: Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops + Hands-on
UK, September 20, 2007 - We nearly missed this one completely seeing as Konami decided to chain its Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops + demo unit to a scantily clad lady looking a bit lonely in the corner of its MGS4 booth. After some faltering communication (ie. pointing and waving) though, we managed to get a quick play through one of the game's multiplayer deathmatch modes.

In all honesty, it's tough to say exactly what was going on as it quickly became apparent that we were up against an army of equally naked ladies over the other side of the booth who all suddenly rushed our position giggling in what we can only imagine was a well-rehearsed distraction technique designed to make us immediately very rubbish at the game.

Here's what we managed to glean though: playing as Raiden in our case, we had access to four items - a close-range knife, machine gun, sniper rifle (all of which had names but you try playing, writing and fighting off a small girl cheating viciously by looking directly at your screen) and, obviously, a porn mag. We actually completely failed to realise what this last one was until one of our fellow players started shouting "PORNO! PORNO!" - by which time we'd already whipped it out, slumped into prone position and scuttled into the quiet safety of an air duct. Which, in retrospect, probably just looked perverted.

Our surroundings for this game consisted largely of grey concrete walls forming deep trenches to run through and plenty of handy hiding corners. Up above, a maze of walkways provided plenty of sniping opportunities - with weapons available in either first- or third-person. At one point we were clearly in the lead - obvious from the green frog on our head and someone shrieking "You number one!" close by - but things quickly fell apart, landing us in a slightly desperate fifth place at the end of play.

As much as we'd like to tell you more, we're pretty much limited to noting it ran smoothly over local wi-fi with six players and was kind of fun if utterly confusing and a bit grey. Hopefully we'll have the chance to go more in-depth with the game soon - and investigate what that '+' is all about - preferably with less flying skirt and knicker flashes.
