Red Devils boss still sore about suspension for foul language but thinks his side will not feel the tension ahead of Champions League decider against Blues

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Wayne Rooney’s return will motivate the team against Chelsea on Tuesday for their Champions League second leg.

The Football Association decided to hit the star striker with a two match ban following the foul-mouthed rant he made into a television camera after completing a hat-trick against West Ham, meaning he missed Saturday’s game against Fulham and will also have to sit out the upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley.

However, as Carlo Ancelotti’s side travels to Old Trafford, where the Red Devils have lost just a single European match out of 29 since 2005, United’s longest serving manager believes that the 25-year-old will stirred to make an impact against the London team.

“When I came home on Saturday night from West Ham my wife said “They’ll do him” and I said “Don’t be stupid they can’t do him for celebrating” but they did; it’s amazing,” he said to The Telegraph.

“It will spur Wayne on, we have a great motivation now with what has happened.

“I spoke to Wayne of course I did. He wrote the letter to the FA, he did his bit and we thought we had put a proper appeal in recognising he apologised.

“Wayne is disappointed at the outcome, we are looking to use this situation, use it with our fans. The fans will be great.”

Ferguson further commented on the FA’s disciplinary committees about which he said:

“Somebody said they have 14 full time people in the discipline department I don’t know if that’s right but if there are – for what?

“I don’t know these people but it’s not worth bothering about, you just take your medicine and get on with it.”

The United boss also brushed off aside any concerns about away goals or tensions ahead of Tuesday’s game and said: “Just to cut through all the nonsense straight away, the easiest way to it is to win the game.

“We have to win the match and forget everything else. Talking about what to do if Chelsea score a goal and will everyone become nervous, I’m not going to get into that simply because the direct route is to win the match in the same fashion and determination we showed on Tuesday night.

“That will solve all of the problems. I think they’ll play their normal way with a slow build-up.

They’ll try to keep possession of the ball and hope we make mistakes.”

Ferguson is also hoping to be able to select Rio Ferdinand who is back after spending over two months on the sideline with a calf injury.

“Last Sunday I was watching the U12s playing against Liverpool, and I saw Rio coming over in a buggy,” he added.

“He asked how the kids were getting on and said 'I’m definitely ready, no problem'. I didn’t need to persuade him.

“I don’t anticipate any problems with injuries now and he is fresh, which is a good thing.”
