Some of the discussions of the fans could revolve around the best players at the club, the players the club should sign and all of that. I have to say I am not one of those that think we should always buy big players. In my view, we’ve got some very decent young talent coming through at the club. I am going to be taking a look at a few of these players that could, in my opinion, stake a first team claim in the very near future. In compiling this list, it could have been very easy to pick the like of Welbeck, Macheda, Bébé and Obertan considering they all have first team experience. I am going for players without first team experience although a couple of them have appeared in the first team squad. Tom Cleverley Tom is a young midfielder who offers something that only Darron Gibson seems to offer from midfield right now, a goals threat. The goal threat comes from his good movement off the ball and impressive approach play. He’s currently an England U-21 international. His first taste of first team football came at the Vodacom challenge at the beginning of the 08/09 season. He also played against Valencia in a friendly before the start of last season. He has enjoyed loan spells at Leicester, Watford and he’s presently at Wigan. At Wigan he’s played on the last hand side in a 4-2-3-1 formation. I think that’s the formation suited to him because I don’t see him really dominating a midfield in a 4-4-2. Ravel Morrison A creative midfielder that scores and assists goal for fun, Morrison can on both wings. He’s definitely the most talked about on this list, for footballing and non-footballing reasons. He’s got fantastic technique and some tidy dribbling skills allowing him to be that little bit unpredictable on the pitch while offering the spark needed to win tight games, although his temperament is suspect. He could be a regular first team member in three years. Oliver Norwood The least talked about on this list, Oliver has a very good range of passing coupled with some dead-ball skills. He’s not afraid to put in a tackle as well as have a try from long range. He joined United in 2009 and has gone about, quietly, establishing himself as one of the most essential reserve team players. He’s eligible to play for England but opted for Northern Ireland. He’s never gone out on loan so maybe next season he could go out and show what he’s made of. I expected that he’d have been given more of a chance considering the paucity of options in midfield, but the fully expect him to grab his chance when it does come. Paul Pogba A youngster with very good physical and technical qualities, he joined united in a much-talked about transfer from Le Havre in 2009. He has grown from strength to strength and is now starring for the reserves. He has been compared to countrymen Patrick Vieira and Abou Diaby. I would compare him more to a taller Lassana Diarra because of his enthusiasm and boundless energy. He could yet turn out to be a very important player for the future. William Keane A young striker that took the academy by storm when he arrived scoring goal after goal, he has already featured for England in the European U-16 championship which England won. A technically gifted striker, he’s got a fair amount of skill and is developing fast. He has turned out to be an important player for the reserves this season. He’s currently on his way back from injury. He could yet have to take the route of a loan spell or two before appearing in the first team squad. But he surely is going to be a good player. The likes of Rob Brady, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Josh King look like decent prospects. They could as yet turn out even better than the above. It is a bit noticeable that this list contains more midfielders. Maybe it because I’m eager for midfielders to come through or maybe we don’t have to worry about our midfield for the next few years, either the next few years could be really exciting. Carrick: Sometimes if you’re playing in a really big game and you’re winning comfortably and there’s a break in play, you might take a minute to look around the ground especially if the atmosphere is really good. But most of the time, like the others said, you’re just focused on doing your job. Whenever we see pictures taken at the training ground it looks like you have a heck of a laugh alongside the hard work you put in. Is that a fair reflection? Rooney: Yes definitely. It’s just a great club to be at and be part of. There’s always a lot of banter going on, most of it aimed at Wes. Brown: Yeah it is! Apparently Wayne and Fletch are always up to things, is that true? We give him a lot of stick every day but he takes it brilliantly and is a really top man. Do dodgy items of clothing still get hung up in the dressing room? Rooney: Not as much now. Carrick: The thing you have to be ready for is sweaty socks and strappings being launched at you after training. Giggsy seems to be a god-like figure in the dressing room. Are you allowed to take the mickey out of him or is he untouchable? Rooney: His locker isn’t! Carrick: No-one does anything to Giggsy, really, do they? There’s that respect thing for him. Brown: It’s the same with Scholesy. Carrick: They still get involved in the banter. Giggsy can be quite quiet but then he’ll throw in a very dry one-liner. What’s been the funniest moment at Carrington ever? Rooney: It’ll have to have involved Gary Neville… Carrick: Someone’s trainers got cut up once didn’t they… [All laugh] Rooney: Me and Fletch cut through a pair of Wes’ trainers one day and pushed them back together so it looked like nothing had changed. But when he picked one of them up to put on, the heel just came off in his hand!
