Messi was rested in the Argentina versus Serbia game that ended 2-0.

Argentina qualified as group winners for the quarter-finals, where they will play against the Netherlands.

In the semi-finals there could be a clash between Argentina and Brazil.

Begiristain Forgets Silva, Looks Ahead

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has quickly put his failure to land David Silva behind him by revealing that the club could still make another major signing before the close of the transfer market.

The Blaugrana have been in hot pursuit of Valencia winger David Silva in the last few weeks but the player’s decision to sign a lucrative new contract with Los Ché has forced Barça sporting director Txiki Begiristain to throw in the towel.

“He was a player who we were very interested in. But if he did not wanted to leave, we could not negotiate with him and therefore we could not sign him,” he confessed,

Not only has Txiki admitted defeat in the race for the talented 22 year old, but he also sent a congratulatory note to Valencia for successfully hanging on to their prized asset, amid countless attractive offers from some of Europe’s big guns.

But Txiki went on to assure that the failure to sign Silva will not, by any means, put an end to their involvement in the transfer market, which closes at the end of the 31st of August.

“We are still inside the transfer market and if we see a player whom we like, we will try to sign him. I do not discard the possibility of signing another footballer,” he declared.

Finally, the 44 year old revealed that one of the reasons the club decided to retain Samuel Eto’o was simply because of his impressive goal-scoring ratio.

“We like what we have seen in Samuel and we, including Guardiola, are all in agreement that he should continue with us,” explained Txiki.

The Cameroonian has been in excellent form in pre-season, having notched up seven goals in the five games that he has featured in so far, including two in last night’s 4-0 thrashing of Wisla Krakow.

Case closed: Silva

Valencia left winger and Spanish international David Silva (22) will not play for Barcelona as of next season, like had been strongly rumoured over the last months (read more here).

Valencia has officially announced a deal on a contract renewal yesterday. The duration of Silva's contract hasn't been changed (2013) but it is believed that the player will receive an important pay rise.

Alves Out For Two Weeks
Daniel Alves will be out of action for at least two weeks after picking up a shoulder injury during Barcelona's Champions League victory over Wisla on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilian international fell awkwardly after a challenge midway through the second half, and after some brief treatment on the pitch, was taken off.

Tests have been carried out and the injury is not as serious as was first feared with doctors confirming that Alves has only strained his shoulder joint.

While the knock will mean that he is unable ot play in the Catalan club's annual Trofeo Joan Gamper game against Boca Juniors at the weekend he will be ready for the start of the season.

Medics at Camp Nou were predicting that the former Sevilla full-back could be back in time to play against Wisla in the second leg of the European tie, but he may not be risked with Barça four goals ahead.

After being told that Alves would not continue during the game in midweek, Pep Guardiola became frustrated on the bench as Gerard Piqué was called back from warming-up and missed two opportunities to go on.

First the Catalan defender was not changed and then secondly he then had to go back to the bench before finally making his entrance in the 75th minute.

Contract renewal for Eto'o

French sports paper L'Equipe claims that Barcelona forward and Cameroonian international Samuel Eto'o (27) is on the verge of signing a contract renewal after a meeting yesterday morning between the player and Barcelona officials.

The contract of Eto'o, that now expires in 2010, would be extended until 2012 and the salary of the player would rise from 7,5 to 9 million euro a year.

Asked about the rumour, sources close to the player confirmed the meeting to Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo but denied the deal and said a renewal was not the subject of the meeting.
