One day, a female Shinigami (God of Death) named Kuchiki Rukia appears before him, hunting for an evil spirit. But during the confrontation, the Shinigami`s powers are transfered to Ichigo. Thus begins the adventures of Ichigo and Rukia and their mission to herd Hollows (fallen spirits) as well as confronting other spiritual beings. Kisuke Urahara * Rank: Lieutinant Kisuke is an extremely skilled fighter, using a combination of powerful attacks and cunning deceptions, and has been capable of toying with Yammy, an Espada-level arrancar, with nothing more than his shikai. Kisuke's strength was further elaborated on in the manga, in the past he was selected as the head of the Detention Unit because of his ability to defeat any of the detainees with only his bare hands, as weapons were not allowed inside the facility. He also likes building large underground training spaces in secret. He built the first one under the Sōkyoku hill in Soul Society with Yoruichi for them to play in and later made it larger so they could keep up their training,and created a second one under his shop in the mortal realm for a similar purpose. Yoruichi Shihōin * Rank: 1st Oficer Yoruichi Shihōin is a woman who can transform into a black cat for long periods of time. She is intelligent and witty, and is intimately knowledgeable of Soul Society and its workings, as she was the former leader of the special forces and the 2nd division captain. Although of noble birth, she acts differently from other nobles. For instance, she instructed a young Soifon to call her by her first name instead of by her title, but reluctantly settled for being called "Yoruichi-sama" ("Lady Yoruichi" in the dub). She also transforms into her human form directly in front of Ichigo on several occasions just to see his reaction to seeing her naked, which she found decidedly humorous. Another note of her eccentricity is that she speaks in a dialect that elders use, such as identifying herself as 'washi' (a term that usually old men define themselves with) instead of more feminine terms like 'watashi' in both her human and animal forms (though specifically for the Japanese version). Isshin Kurosaki * Rank: 2rd Oficer Isshin Kurosaki is the father of the Kurosaki family. He is initially portrayed as a silly, fight-loving father who takes a keen interest in what his children are doing. He shows them affection either offensively or with an all-too-happy tone, which elicits comical reactions from his kids, usually in the form of a kick. Later in the series he reveals himself as a former Soul Reaper, regaining his powers after twenty years so that he can avenge his wife's death by killing Grand Fisher. While in the form of a Soul Reaper, Isshin is generally more serious than usual, only breaking character to defend his eccentric parenting methods. It is unclear what he did while he was a Soul Reaper or why he left, it only being implied that he was captain-level by the piece of captain's robe worn over his shoulder. He seems to be aware of the goings on in the spiritual community through Kisuke Urahara, knowing of Sosuke Aizen's actions and having known for some time that Ichigo has become a Soul Reaper. Ulquiorra Schiffer     * Rank: 3rd Oficer Ulquiorra is a male arrancar with a melancholic appearance and has green eyes with slit pupils. He has cyan lines descending from his eyes, making it appear as if he is crying, and is almost always frowning. He wears typical arrancar clothes: a white jacket, black sash, and a white hakama; however, his jacket has longer coat-tails than others. Like most other arrancar, he possesses remnants of his former life as a hollow in his appearance. In his first appearance, Ulquiorra's hollow hole is positioned at the base of his neck, but when Ichigo encounters Ulquiorra in Las Noches, it has been moved onto his chest. The remainder of his hollow mask lies on top of his head, forming a broken helmet, much like that of the example silhouette of a vasto lorde. His Espada number, four, signifying his rank amongst the Espada and level of power, is tattooed on the left side of his chest.
