Euro 2008 Best Eleven: Group Stages Round One
Goal.com's Abhishek Thakur picks out the best performers from the first round of group stage action.

Spain and the Netherlands were very clearly the teams of the round on the back of their impressive wins, with the likes of Wesley Sneijder, David Villa, Gio van Bronckhorst and Rafael Van der Vaart all coming good.

These two sides were followed closely by Germany and Portugal, who picked up no-nonsense wins to make themselves favourites from the top half of the draw.

Christian Chivu impressed as Romania caused a few surprises by denying a subdued France side, the Czechs pipped Switzerland in a somewhat forgettable tournament opener thanks to some late saves from Petr Cech, while Croatia rode their luck to beat a spirited Austrian side.

In the final game of the round, Sweden joined Spain as group leaders after seeing off defending champions Greece.

Goalkeeper

Petr Cech (Czech Republic): The Chelsea number one sneaks into this spot just ahead of Edwin van der Sar after making a string of absolutely electric saves to grab three points for the Czechs amid a very shaky last end to the game.

Defenders

Jose Bosingwa (Portugal): If the goalkeeping spot went close, this one most certainly didn't. There is little doubt over the most impressive performance at right back as the new Chelsea signing showed the world just what the fuss was all about against Turkey. Kept Tuncay in his pocket, and contributed to the attack as well. Phillip Lahm finished second.

Pepe (Portugal) - Headed home brilliantly early on, but was half a yard or so offside. Scored a quite magnificent goal later on, breaking forward from defence. Strong and imposing at the back, with that attacking flair every 'Brazilian' defender has. Continues to improve on his strong end to the season with Real Madrid.

Christian Chivu (Romania): Played in a midfield role against France, and showed his class and versatility. Tidied up superbly when needed, and also showed his ability to distribute the ball from deep lying positions. A truly inspired display. Slots back into defence here.

Gio van Bronckhorst (Netherlands): As on the right, there is little debate about the left back spot, with the former Arsenal and Barcelona man making a decisive contibution at both ends of the pitch, be it his goalline clearance or his goal moments later. One of the best players on the pitch in an historic game.

Midfielders

Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands): The architect of the Dutch display and win, in many ways. He was right at the centre of all the moves, and particularly during those precise breaks that ripped right through the Azzurri rearguard. Another player who has picked up from just where he left it with Real Madrid.

Andreas Ivanschitz (Austria): The Austrians had the better of the Croatians for much of the game, and most of it was because of Ivanschitz stamping his authority in the middle of the pitch and pulling the strings.

Michael Ballack (Germany): The captain has been sensational for Germany in the last two World Cups, and was no different on Sunday. Stamped his authority on the pitch, combined superbly with Torsten Frings, and picked passes at will.

Rafael van der Vaart (Netherlands): The highly rated Hamburg playmaker was picking his passes at will, and making a mockery of the Italian defence for much of the game. Pleasing on the eye, and very effective as well. Juventus might have to pay a premium price if they want him now.

Strikers

Lukas Podolski (Germany): He was shunted out to the left because of his lack of scoring form and Bastian Schweinsteiger's poor season, but made a fabulous case to be picked up front with his inspired two goal display. His understanding with Miroslav Klose is just as it was during the World Cup. Moved into his rightful position here.

David Villa (Spain): If you had to pick the player of the round, you need not look beyond this man, who was drafted into the first team only over the last week as Luis Aragones looked to provide support for Fernando Torres. Well, the entire team was providing support to him on Tuesday as he ripped Russia to shreds with his hat-trick.

Honourable Mentions

As with every selection, there will always be good players who miss out. Fernando Torres and Henrik Larsson both had good games, providing three assists between them. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a fabulous goal, but loses out to those who did better.

In midfield, the likes of Torsten Frings, Deco, Xavi and Andres Iniesta all came good. Cristiano Ronaldo was not at his best, but gave us a good preview of things that could come later in the tournament.

At the back, Edwin van der Sar is terribly unlucky to miss out, as is Tomas Ujfalusi, who was the Czech's best outfielder, albeit against a largely benign Swiss attack. Phillip Lahm was also impressive for Germany.
