PS They lied, they lied!!! and then...then..they left )))

IGN PlayStation 2 Awards:

Best Action Game

God of War

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCE Studios Santa Monica

Why It Rocked:  When it comes to action, God of War is the freaking bee's knees. Our boy Kratos the super Spartan has a combat system that's so fluid, intuitive and deep, it's actually hard to go back play any other similarly themed action title. The experience is also visceral. It's so visceral, in fact, that ripping men in half, tearing arms off harpies, stabbing Hydra in the eye, and performing any number of other vicious activities is wholly satisfying. Yet, for an action title to be IGN's best of 2005, it must feature the absolute best combat, and that's really what God of War is all about, blood or not.

The enemies are diverse and challenging. The combinations are smooth and elaborate. The weapons and magic are all different and useful. And the controls...the controls allow for instantaneous changes between combinations, attacks, guards, and throws. No other game so expertly blends feel with functionality. If you're looking for action, you're looking for Kratos and his wicked Chaos Blades.

Runners-Up:
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Resident Evil 4

Best Adventure Game

Shadow of the Colossus

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCEI

Why It Rocked:  When we think of great adventure games, it's less about specific elements of the title and more about the entire, overall journey, one that leaves a lasting memory like a classic childhood fairytale. Shadow of the Colossus is one of these games, a breathtaking adventure the likes of which we've honestly never really seen before. The game takes enormous risks, betting that its grand total of 16 fights and the traveling in-between said battles are enough to keep the interest of gamers. It's one of those games where every moment is great, but the overall experience is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

The overall solemn and lonely feeling instilled in the game's world and its characters is transferred excellently to the player, resulting in an emotional tie to the universe that most RPGs can only dream of. There's not really much more that can be said without spoiling anything, other than that this is easily the best PlayStation 2 adventure game of the year, if not ever.

Runners-Up:
Fatal Frame III: The Tormented
Indigo Prophecy

Best Fighting Game

Tekken 5

Publisher:  Namco
Developer:  Namco

Why It Rocked:  Namco's excellent Tekken 5 didn't win the PlayStation 2 fighting game of the year because of its slick 60 frames-per-second visuals. Nor did it win because you can go back in time and play through arcade perfect versions of the first three games (though that could have been an award-winning game in itself). You see, what really pushed Tekken 5 into the champion's bracket for 2005 is that it manages to do everything, and we do mean everything, incredibly well.

Just what is everything, you ask? Well, if you're a fan of well-balanced character tiers, Tekken 5 has it. If you loved Virtua Fighter 4's arcade ranking mode, then Tekken 5 has its own version of that too. Players can even spend hard-earned virtual-dollars on cool new accessories to customize their characters and there are enough ten-strings, juggles, combos, and hidden moves to keep even the most active Tekken fan happy for the next couple of years. Far more than just an upgrade over 4, Tekken 5 is the real deal and more importantly... really, really good.

Runners-Up:
Soulcalibur III
WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006

Best First-Person Shooter

TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

Publisher:  Electronic Arts
Developer:  Free Radical Design

Why It Rocked:  It's hard not to like TimeSplitters and Free Radical's latest stab at it, Future Perfect, continues that likeable trend. In fact, this third TimeSplitters adventure is easily its best -- offering a number of features, goodies, and gameplay enhancements that few other games in the category can match. Story-based co-op play, 16-player online deathmatch competition, and hundreds of unlockables only scratch the surface of what this game has to offer... not to mention that signature TimeSplitters humor.

What stands out most about TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, though, is its level of control. No other first-person shooter on the PlayStation 2 feels as comfortable or responsive as this -- nor does any other FPS this year have as many ways to enjoy that distinct mechanical advantage. Twenty-plus weapons (the gravity gun is fantastic), time paradoxes that allow you to team up with yourself, heavily armed vehicles and tanks, the best physics that money can buy... it's all in there, and it's a heck of a ride while it lasts.

Runners-Up:
Area 51
Project: Snowblind

Best Platform Game

Psychonauts

Publisher:  Majesco
Developer:  Budcat Creations / Double Fine Productions

Why It Rocked:  It may not be as polished as the Xbox game that it was ported from, but Budcat Creations' translation of Double Fine's awesome platformer is serious business. Not only does it bring a fresh originally to its storyline and premise (you're a psychic-in-training that can travel into different worlds locked inside people's minds), but also to its gameplay. Move objects with Telekinesis, become undetectable with the powers of invisibility, or use your own thought bubble as a shield against enemy attacks... how's that for tremendous?

What's more is that Psychonauts doesn't just throw those powers at you just for the sake of having them -- you'll have to use them all, and often. Finding hidden bonuses, exploring vastly different environments (crushed velvet world anyone?), and laughing at some truly funny situations is all in a day's work for gamers lucky enough to play Psychonauts. This is what platforming is all about, and we can only keep our fingers crossed while hoping for a sequel.

Runners-Up:
Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves
Tak: The Great Juju

Best Racing/Driving Game

Gran Turismo 4

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  Polyphony Digital

Why It Rocked:  No series has really transferred the experience it simulates better than the Gran Turismo franchise, and GT4 is no different. Polyphony's driving simulators may still have a relatively steep learning curve, but those who dig their heels into the pedals will find themselves in for the ride of their life. From the inch-accurate track recreations to the hue-perfect paint tones, Gran Turismo 4 is the quintessential watermark for perfected recreation in a videogame. Sure, it's not a giant leap over GT3, but could things really have gotten much better on the PS2? We don't think so.

While the driving has always been key, the cars have always been the center of focus in any Gran Turismo game, and GT4's ride list is not only massive, but it fantastically brings together the most important vehicles from motoring's history. Add in new mission-based races, more and better tracks than ever before, the excellent photography mode and more, and it's easy to see why Gran Turismo 4 is the best racing game on the PlayStation this year.

Runners-Up:
Burnout Revenge
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition

Best RPG

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Publisher:  Square Enix
Developer:  Level-5

Why It Rocked:  Square Enix's massive role-player is so big, it'll probably take you 30 hours just to get off the first continent -- and there are plenty more (not to mention a couple of islands). Yes friends, Dragon Quest VIII is THE RPG event of 2005 and it's for good reason: no other game in the genre comes close in terms of size, personality, fun, and replayability. The amazing thing is it doesn't do anything we haven't seen before... it just does everything so well, we don't mind its lack of traditionalism.

If we were to list the reasons that Dragon Quest VIII accomplishes such a feat we'd be here all day, but to name just a few, artist Akira Toriyama has really outdone himself with his creature and hero designs; the monster arena mini-quest is almost a game in itself; the built-in casino segments are addicting fun; and the soundtrack, graphics, and voice-acting tell one heck of an entertaining story. Need more reasons? Just go out and buy it... we're positive that you'll find a couple dozen motives of your own.

Runners-Up:
Radiata Stories
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (я бы эту выбрал  )

Best Strategy Game

Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome

Publisher:  NIS America
Developer:  Nippon Ichi Software

Why It Rocked:  So Lord Zetta has lost his body and empire and has been sealed inside an ancient book. Now it's up to you to get it back for him, but you'll have to fight your way through a couple thousand monsters and roadblocks first. That shouldn't be a problem for you, however, because in NIS America's addictive (and very large) Makai Kingdom, it's just as hard to stop playing it as it is to defeat its hardest bosses.

Building on the same pedigree established by our eternal favorite Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Chronicles of the Sacred Tome is absolutely packed with challenging gameplay. Item construction, character creation, town building, and a whole bunch of classic SRPG dungeon whacking is all in a day's work for Lord Zetta and his cohorts. Meld that with one of the funniest scripts we've ever played and some truly challenging brain-busting situations, and setting the crown atop the head of 2005's tactical king isn't disputable in the least.

Runners-Up:
Full Spectrum Warrior
Romance of the Three Kingdoms X

Best Graphics Technology

God of War

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCE Studios Santa Monica

Why It Rocked:  Technically, God of War is an outstanding visual achievement for Sony's PlayStation 2. The game features high resolution graphics, widescreen progressive scan output, a consistently silky framerate that never stutters, and some of the most impressive environments, characters, and effects we've yet seen on the system. There's also little to no loading. Yow!

God of War also features very impressive use of scale. Kratos will fight sea monsters that are five stories high, climb a chained Titan whose back supports a trapped palace, and eventually battle the God of War himself, a lumbering beast the size of a mountain and complete with fiery mane. This game is just an absolutely insane collection of programming wizardry that we simply don't see anywhere else on PS2. God of War is the title you'll use to demonstrate the effectiveness of PS2 despite the advent of the next-generation and other current generation competitors, anyway. Because when all is said and done, God of War still looks better than 90% of games on the market.

Runners-Up:
Gran Turismo 4
Tekken 5

Best Artistic Design

Shadow of the Colossus

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCEI

Why It Rocked:  Shadow of the Colossus is simply dripping with phenomenal artistic design, something that may not be apparent from screenshots alone. The incredibly original and yet somehow wholly familiar art style is quite obvious in the game's varied and extremely impressive Colossi, but it's the little details here and there in the world that really set the game apart from anything else on the system this year.

Though the land is essentially barren and can require upwards of ten minutes or so to travel the countryside, the scenery is brought to life so well that everything around you becomes candy for your eyes, creating not one second of boredom through your lonely travels. It's almost as if SCEJ was able to bring a painting to life, a dark and somber painting, but a piece of art nonetheless. And of course, the design of the various Colossi is pure brilliance, with each one seeming individual and unique, yet somehow connected to the others. Shadow of the Colossus is quite simply a crowning achievement in videogame art direction.

Runners-Up:
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Killer 7

Best Original Score

God of War

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCE Studios Santa Monica

Why It Rocked:  This was a tough call. Shadow of the Colossus and God of War both have amazing audio, but in the end we went with Kratos' music. Magical and graceful as Shadow of the Colossus's original score is, God of War actually has music we listen to in our cars very, very loudly.

When PSP launched we cruised back and forth along San Francisco's 4th St. pumping out tunes from within Pandora's temple as hundreds of anxious shoppers cheered us on or cowered in fear. And when we roll drinking -- much to the chagrin of San Francisco's social scene -- we roll with Ares' trumpets and drums blaring out of boom boxes.

There's just something about God of War's orchestral music that makes us want to tear the arms off a harpy. And hey, we can do that in this game! That's how awesomely it works. When we listen to GoW music, we want to stand behind Kratos and war with his enemies. And that's what it's all about.

Runners-Up:
Shadow of the Colossus
Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose

Best Story

God of War

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCE Studios Santa Monica

Why It Rocked:  Behold Ares, the merciless God of War -- the walking mountain who rides a chariot of golden fire driven by his steeds Flame and Terror. Only the crowds of damned men who carry with them Pain, Panic, Famine, and Oblivion trail the heels of this embodiment of combat. He is father to Deimos and Phobos. He is disliked by the gods, and to his own lord Zeus remains the most hateful of all who hold Olympus. Ares is war and war has its sights set on its sister, Athena. She is Athena, who leapt from her father Zeus' mind armored and grown. She is Pallas Athene, who wounded Ares when he fought alongside Apollo's Trojans. Wounds heal, but scars remain. Now the rage of War itself is upon her.

But the hate of a god cannot touch another god. Zeus had commanded that none of his children should battle another. His revenge denied, Ares uses his army of damned men to pillage Athens, the beloved jewel of Athena. In return, Athena summons Kratos to murder Ares.

Now that's a story!

Runners-Up:
Indigo Prophecy
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga

Most Innovative Design

EyeToy: Kinetic

Publisher:  Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer:  SCEE

Why It Rocked:  Let's be honest, we're lazy bastards. We play games with our thumbs, which hardly qualifies as real exercise. And yet, Kinetic implores and empowers us to get off our fat, useless asses and actually workout. But why would we want to do that? We're already great at not going to the gym. How does Kinetic succeed where so many Bowflexes have failed? Easy, it's actually fun!

The heart pumping, muscle-tiring cardio exercises of EyeToy: Kinetic will burn pounds away and tone unsightly shapes. All of the mini-games in this neat little package are also enjoyable enough to be worth the effort, too. Kinetic requires players to furiously wave arms and legs around like a maniac hitting balls, dodging markers, punching through walls and doing other things only EyeToy titles are capable of. It's a game you'll strive to win at because points and victory are always good things to have, but in the process you'll help your neglected body out by forcing blood through all those buttered up veins. Simple, entirely effective and totally innovative, EyeToy: Kinetic is just cool.

Runners-Up:
Killer 7
Shadow of the Colossus

Best Game No One Played

Indigo Prophecy (aka Farenheit in US)

Publisher:  Atari
Developer:  Quantic Dream

Why It Rocked:  It's been a long time since a PC point and click adventure has been done right for a console (Escape From Monkey Island anyone?), but Atari's Indigo Prophecy proved (and very effectively we might add) that if you give a game enough time and attention, the genre is just as fun on your television set as it is on your monitor. Unfortunately, the masses just weren't willing to take that chance yet.

Indigo Prophecy's lack of commercial success is a real shame too, as it manages to tell one of the most intriguing stories around (a murder mystery that allows you to play as both the murderer and the detectives trying to catch him at the same time!). The game ultimately succeeds, though, because it tells its story with a strong blend of cinematic direction and interactive gameplay sequences -- a feat that few would-be console developers can seem to get right. We just hope that our little award can draw some extra attention to it, because trust us when we say there's fun here... and lots of it.

Runners-Up:
Atelier Iris ~Eternal Mana~
Psychonauts

Biggest Surprise

GTA Hot Coffee Controversy

Publisher:  Rockstar Games
Developer:  Rockstar North

Why It Rocked:  Who would have thought that a scrapped rhythm sequence that could only be accessed through backdoor means would have caused a national scandal involving house representatives, senators, lawsuits, and watchdog groups? But that's exactly what happened with the "Hot Coffee" controversy surrounding GTA: San Andreas. The hidden sex mini-game caused a firestorm of hullabaloo all summer long. It resulted in the recall of one of the highest-selling videogames of all time and refocused a call for industry self-censorship not seen since the first Mortal Kombat uproar of the 1990s.

Since this whole thing started in July, San Andreas has been re-released free of Hot Coffee but the fallout doesn't show any signs of letting up. Several government officials have renewed their efforts to create stricter provisos on the games industry, the ESRB has begun to smash its boot hard against publishers who stray past guidelines, and debate groups from all over are discussing apparent double standards when it comes to the censorship of sex over violence. In short, Hot Coffee will be hot topic for a long time to come.

Runners-Up:
BioWare and Pandemic join forces
Soulcalibur III goes PS2-exclusive (YEAH!!)

Shadow of The Colossus -
