Battlefield Heroes
Genre: Action
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: DICE Stockholm
Platforms: PC Exclusive
Release Date: Q3 2008
Official Site: http://www.battlefield-heroes.com/
Universe: Battlefield 1942 (PC), Battlefield 1942: The Road To Rome (PC), Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII (PC), Battlefield 1942 Deluxe Edition (PC), Battlefield Vietnam (PC), Battlefield 1942: World War II Anthology (PC), Battlefield 1942: The Complete Collection (PC), Battlefield 2 (PC), Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (X360) (XBOX) (PS2) (PSP), Battlefield 2: Special Forces (PC), Battlefield 2: Armored Fury (PC), Battlefield 2142 (PC) (MAC), Battlefield 2: Booster Pack Collection (PC), Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike (PC), Battlefield 2: Complete Collection (PC), Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition (PC)

EA caused a bit of a stir recently when it announced that the next PC game in its popular Battlefield franchise is going to be a free-to-play Web-based title. We were curious, too; thankfully we finally got our first look at Battlefield Heroes at the recent Game Developers Conference. Here's what we learned: While it has and will undoubtedly continue to draw comparisons to last year's Team Fortress 2 for its cartoon look, the developers at DICE say that it's also the deepest Battlefield game that they've ever made.

To hammer in the point that this is supposed to be fun and crazy, the demonstration started with a somber trailer full of World War II images. Just when you might think that you're watching another video for another World War II game, the trailer busts open with a zany montage of cartoon violence, with soldiers running around a colorful battlefield, riding on the wings of fighter planes, zipping around in tanks as if they were sports cars, and the like.

Though the game has vehicles and weapons and uniforms that are obviously inspired by World War II counterparts, this is not set in World War II. It's not even really set on Earth as we know it. The guys in grey and black aren't Nazis or Germans, but rather members of the National Army. The fellows in green and tan aren't British or Americans. Instead, they're members of the Royal Army. Even the conflict itself is a bit silly to fit into the game's humor: The Royals and the Nationals are battling over a quarrel regarding the Olympic games. This isn't about a titanic clash of totalitarianism versus democracy.

So here's the deal. The game is indeed free to play. All you'll have to do is go to the game's Web site and click on the brightly colored play button, and that will launch the installer. The system requirements are low enough to support most integrated graphics chipsets found in budget computers. (The other requirements right now are a 1GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM.) When you install the game, you also create a login and a password for your profile. It will not ask for you a credit card number. Once the game is installed, you just go back to the Web site, hit play, log in, and the game launches. The entire process is designed to very similar to registering for an Internet forum or social site such as MySpace.

Free sounds like a great deal to the consumer, but not for businesses. EA plans to make money mainly through advertising. For instance, whenever the game is loading, you'll see ads. We saw two big banner ads for EA games that were released last year (keep in mind we saw the in-development version of Battlefield Heroes, so those were placeholders). EA says that there will not be any in-game advertising in the game itself, so you will not see any billboards or posters for the latest Hollywood movie or Detroit car while dodging bullets. A secondary source of income is microtransactions that are entirely optional, though EA didn't really go into depth about what types of things you'll be able to purchase.

Heroes will distill the Battlefield experience into a more intimate package online. Like with other Battlefield games, there's just one mode in Heroes, and it is sort of a mix of team deathmatch and the classic Battlefield conquest mode. Each team has 50 tickets, or respawns, at its disposal. When a player dies, he uses up a ticket to respawn back into the game. The goal is to be the last team standing. There will be control points that can be captured, and they will confer a modifier to whichever team controls them. For instance, controlling all flags might result in your team being awarded two kills for every one that you make. The maximum player limit per match is 16; in comparison, Battlefield 2 tops out at 64.

There are three classes that you can play as: soldier, gunner, and commando. You select a class at the beginning of the match and you can't switch in midmatch. The commando is the light class; capable of being completely invisible at a distance and semitransparent up close. He's armed with a knife and a sniper rifle, each of which takes a couple of whacks to kill with. That is to soften the frustration felt in other Battlefield games, where you're suddenly killed with a single shot of a sniper rifle. In Battlefield Heroes, the first hit you receive is a warning and a chance for you to do something to survive. Next up is the soldier, which is a medium class, a good mix of speed and firepower. The gunner is the heaviest class, but also the slowest. He's armed with a machine gun and a bazooka. It's key to keep in mind that while the bazooka might be ideal for killing vehicles, all classes will be equipped with sticky mines so that they have an antivehicle weapon.

The action takes place entirely in third-person, save for one moment, which we suspect is probably when you zoom through the scopes of a sniper rifle. Part of the reason is because DICE wants the game to be as friendly as possible to people who have never, ever played a Battlefield game before, and third-person is apparently more accessible and less intimidating and more casual than first-person. The other reason for third-person is so you can see your custom character and all the cool stuff that you'll unlock. Character creation is a bit like an online role-playing game in that you can select different hairstyles, colors, and other physical features. Since the game is played entirely online, it'll also keep a permanent record of your performance. As you advance through the rank system, you'll access new items that you can equip, such as clothing and accessories. The buttoned-up uniform shirt might make way to the unbuttoned-at-the-top shirt, goggles might appear on the helmet, and so on.

Like with all Battlefield games, the action is a mix of infantry and vehicle combat. The difference in Heroes is that everything is meant to be as user-friendly and colorful as possible. Hit a guy with a rifle and you'll see numbers flash above his head indicating how much damage he's taking, just like in a role-playing game. The respawn timer is set to five seconds, so if you're killed, you'll get back in the action quickly. The physics and violence are somewhat cartoonish, from the tanks that can scream through a street and run someone over to the way a pilot can jump out of a plane right before it hits the ground and land on his feet safely.

The developer also says that Battlefield Heroes is the deepest Battlefield game yet. That's because there are special abilities that you can equip before a match that let you do all sorts of things. For instance, you can equip incendiary bullets so you cause burning damage on someone. Another ability is a wall hack that lets you detect enemy soldiers behind solid objects. A health burst will heal not only you, but those around you.

Battlefield Heroes is going to be a very interesting experiment, because this is a game that is designed to appeal not only to Battlefield fans, but also to the vast, untapped masses out there who don't play games because they're too expensive or their computers aren't powerful enough. It's basically Battlefield for the people. Fans of Battlefield 2, though, should also keep note that while no future Battlefield games have been announced, the developer did insist that DICE is working on projects that it can't talk about quite yet. Battlefield Heroes will go live later this year.

Saints Row 2
Genre: Modern Action Adventure
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Volition Inc.
Platforms: Xbox 360 Playstation 3
Release Date: TBA 2008
Official Site: http://www.saintsrow.com/
Universe: Saints Row (X360)

It's not easy for a company to make an open-world game that stands totally separate form the titan that is Grand Theft Auto. THQ went the opposite direction of other companies and decided to make their first entry into the free-roaming gangster genre what was essentially a re-skinned GTA. Luckily for the publisher no one had seen GTA on next-gen systems so Saints Row was their only option for a high-def world of free-roaming destruction. Now it's the year 2008, gamers everywhere are gearing up for Grand Theft Auto IV and yet the people at THQ don't seem worried. In fact, they seem downright confident that Saints Row 2 will be able to woo gamers away from Rockstar's latest. Just last week we got a look at a very early build and while we weren't allowed to delve deep into what the city of Stillwater holds this time around, we can say that the building blocks are once again in place for a rousing open-world thugfest.

As those who played through the first Saints Row know by now, your nameless character was taken out at the end of the storyline thanks to a well-timed boat bomb (like a car bomb, but on a boat). Somehow your kingpin survived the explosion, but not without serious cosmetic damage. Thus the fact that you begin the new storyline by reshaping your character's physique at a doctor's office in the big house is a bit more fitting. You'll later find out that it was actually the higher ups of your own gang who set you up to buy the farm, now it's up to you to rebuild the gang, exact some sweet revenge, and rid Stillwater of the new competing gangs.

Gone are the days of Los Carnales, the Vice Kings, and the Westside Rollerz and they've been replaced by three entirely new gangs. They have new personalities, new lieutenants commanding the peons to and fro, and new Hollywood voice talent to bring it all to life. Not only that, but the city of Stillwater has gone through a sort of time warp and has experienced 25-30 years worth of structural and cosmetic changes in the short time since the first game so things should feel totally different from the first go-round. Not only that, the Ultor Corporation (mentioned lightly in Saints Row) has taken over the city in order to "fix its problems." You can bet that it'll factor into the storyline in one way or another, but THQ is mum for the moment. The single gang that we were shown during our demo was known as Sons of Samedi. We weren't given much background information beyond the mission objective which was to blow up a certain number of trailers that were being used to run drugs.

While the option of chucking explosives into the trailers and blowing them up the old fashioned way was certainly readily available, the developer from Volition who was manning the demo had other things in mind. Since cars can be used to kill enemies in the game, why not go a different route and give them the ability to be converted into makeshift bombs? Well, thanks to the new satchel charge weapon, you can. Simply hop out of your ride, set a charge (or five) on the hood, get it going in the proper direction, ditch the whip and watch it careen into the side of the trailer as you press the detonate button. Fireworks abound! The more traditional gunplay is handled with a Gears of War style over-the-shoulder camera angle (toggled by a click of the right stick) which should please the many who despised the aiming in the first Saints.

The rest of our time in the Sons of Samedi mission was spent perusing the surrounding environment. It was a desert setting that didn't exactly fit with the metropolitan motif of the first game. The Volition representative used a debug (only accessible in early versions) cheat to hop to the location without actually driving there, so we don't know where it is in relation to the rest of the city. Still, the land was populated with mobile homes, traffic routes that featured random events like car crashes and people yelling at one another, and some hilariously inappropriate dialogue from spectating pedestrians.

While the mission looked fun and had the potential for plenty of mayhem, the real star of our demo was the aforementioned customization options that begin Saints Row 2. Everyone expects to be able to change your face, the length of your brow and the contours of your character's mouth, but Volition is taking things a few steps further. Now you'll be able to change their taunt, compliment, walk and combat styles. Taunt options include things like The Dumper, Dog Pissing, Ride the Donkey, The Wanker, and Tea Bag. We'll let your imagination run wild at those possibilities. The different walks range from Pimp Walk to Crazy Walk which makes your character look like a meth head for lack of a better term. Compliments can be as simple as a salute or as complicated as a full-blown riverdance. Those, along with a combat style, come together to create the personality of your gangster which will apparently change the way that characters in the world react to your actions. Also, unlike in the first Saints, your character will actually have plenty of dialogue (there are over 60,000 lines of dialogue throughout Saints 2) to push the plot along. Hooray for no longer being a mute!

Not only can you change the outward appearance and demeanor of your crusading hoodlum but you can also change the aesthetics of your home base – known as a crib for those living the thug life. You can upgrade your pad with things like a stripper pole, nicer electronics, and other trinkets that will help to impress your low life friends.

The rest of what we saw from Saints Row 2 felt very familiar. You can still load up your car with three other gang members to help you during some of the missions, but this time you'll have the option of more than a simple four-door auto. Jet skis, boats, planes, helicopters, and motorcycles will all be available at one point or another. The GPS system that was in the first returns again but this time it will reprogram itself with a new route should you stumble across a shortcut. Activities are also back with new additions to go along with the classic Insurance Fraud and Helicopter Assault but we weren't given examples. The respect system is also returning but has been tweaked a bit to change the way points are divvied up.

Gunplay at every turn.Saints Row 2 is poised to be the quintessential sequel with bigger sights and sounds and more things to do with your time. The multiplayer, which includes a full fledged co-op mode, is said to be totally revamped from the first Saints but no details were given beyond that. With more Hollywood talent, new locations, a few returning characters, new vehicles and a revamped customization system that allows for some truly ridiculous persona options, it looks like Saints Row 2 will be one to watch for when it releases later this year. Whether that means that people will forget about GTA IV to travel to Stillwater, well, that's another matter entirely.

Witches
Other Names: Project Witches
Genre: Fantasy Shooter (sau ceva de genul asta)
Publisher: *TBA
Developer: Revistronic
Platforms: PC Xbox 360 Playstation 3
Release Date: TBA 2008
Official Site: http://www.revistronic.com/web-corp/card-witches/index.htm
Universe: ---

We first laid our shifty eyes on Revisitronic's Witches in August, when screenshots of the third-person action-adventure game first started trickling out of Madrid, where the developer is based. Back then, it was called Project Witches, and all we knew was that it had something to do with bikini-clad ladies fighting evil, as they are wont to do. But this week, Revisitronic sent us a detailed update on the game, full of descriptive language that erased any doubts we previously had about just how sultry the women of Witches really are.

Currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, Witches is set in a medieval landscape which is under the dark shadow of The Beast, a demonic being determined to enslave everyone and generally act like a real jerk. That's where Gwen comes in, "a sultry warrior that still resists his dark will and leads the rebellion against his satanic power."

We could describe the allure of Witches ourselves, but in its fact sheet Revisitronic has done our work for us, rhapsodizing more eloquently that we ever could. This frees us up to scrutinize the screenshots.

Witches pits "sultry girls against satanic monsters," and invites gamers to "Let's (sic) yourself go in this dark medieval narrative and enjoy the contrast between sensual beauty and sinister horrors. Direct the beautiful but dangerous Shadow in a spectacular fight against hordes of repellent deformed creatures."

Here at IGN, we hate the Dark One and all his satanic minions and we jump at every opportunity to act like we are defeating him in videogames. In Witches, destroying demons will be achieved via a "spectacular system of tactical combat" that incorporates "sequences of caution and stealth."

Part of your goal as Gwen will be to free the enslaved as you progress through the game, gaining their help and adding them to your party as a reward. Depending on how well they fight (and ostensibly how much you like their outfits), "you can be a great leader or sacrifice your comrades in the fight. Your decisions will shape your destiny."

It wouldn't be a game marketing pitch without promises of realistic weather systems and a "totally interactive environment," and Revisitronic dutifully hits both points. Skies will be rent with terrible storms, shadows will move menacingly in the fog, and "all game items can be used, creating a sense of total immersion like never before."

And in a move that we're sure has Microsoft and Sony scrambling to license Witches for their platforms, Revisitronic is making it possible for you to "use all kinds of objects to achieve your aims, even the amputated limbs of adversaries."

Whether or not you decide to beat on demons with their own arms, you'll be able to use combo attacks and magical powers in combat in addition to running, climbing and jumping. The "stealth occultism arts" will also make an appearance, and players will be able to "move the lights in real time." We have no idea what that last bit means, but we plan to do it a lot.

Fights will range from one-on-one skirmishes with evildoers to large-scale battles with hundreds of monsters at a time.

There are two modes in Witches, Requiem and Arena, and together they promise to provide more than 12 hours of gameplay across four levels and 80 scenarios. Although we haven't heard any specifics about Witches' online mode yet, we do know that that game is built around cooperative play. The levels are designed for co-op, and you'll be able to switch the main character on the fly.

We know you're mostly interested in Witches for the leather underwear, but we're most intrigued by the storyline, which is described best by the game's tagline: "Where the Dark Arts reign... you can still rise up... and fight." We've been saying that for years.

In Witches, you'll take your "sexy and sensual warriors" through a plot with "different endings based on witches (sic) actions. Their relationship delivers surprises."

Witches doesn't have a publisher yet -- they're currently shopping it around -- and we haven't any hands-on time with Gwen and friends. We're hoping Witches "delivers surprises," but all we have to go by so far are screenshots, line drawings of castles, the above-referenced fact sheet and our dreams.
