The Game Developers Conference 2008 is in full swing in San Francisco, and we took the opportunity to see Supreme Ruler 2020, the upcoming strategy sequel from BattleGoat Studios and Paradox. This sequel will attempt to improve on the previous game by taking user feedback to heart, as well as by trying to make the complicated task of world domination a little more user-friendly.

For serious strategy fans, the game will ship with a full-on, open-ended campaign that will let you take on the role of a nation in a fictitious not-too-distant-future conflict that involves a series of plausible events that get world powers up in arms. However, the game will also ship with between 10 and 20 individual scenarios modeled loosely after real-world conflicts, as well as a brand-new "super sandbox" mode that will let you choose to play as a great nation or a single state in the American union and take on all comers.



In all cases, you'll benefit from a streamlined interface that will keep most of the important menus in the game at the bottom of the screen at all times (rather than requiring you to constantly open nested menus, like in the original game). The interface will show you, at a glance, your current approval rating in your home country and any of your conquered territories both from a military and populist point of view, as well as your current supply levels. You'll also be able to appoint a cabinet of advisors (who can be conservative, liberal, or moderate), which you can use to automate one or more tasks (such as managing your military or managing your trade routes). The advisors appear in the left-hand side of the screen in a static menu, but will also send over quickie email suggestions whenever they spot a particularly ripe opportunity, or a particularly egregious threat (such as your citizens taking umbrage at heavy taxation).

You'll want to keep an eye on your popularity in the territories you hold; certain policies may increase your popularity (such as taking a traditionally liberal stance of pouring money into social spending) but may also drain your coffers. Furthermore, your conquered territories may give rise to partisan opposition parties, or even guerilla armies, if you aren't careful. If your government model happens to be democracy, you can even be voted out of your own country!

Supreme Ruler 2020 seems like it should do a good job of building on the strengths of the original game while opening up the game for newer players. It's scheduled to ship this May.

This game is currently out in Korea, but according to representatives the game's changed so dramatically on its way over to Western territories it really doesn't seem like the same title at all. We saw a demo of this peculiarly named MMOG at GDC 2008 and got an overview of what king of gameplay to expect. The main thing we noticed: this game is really bloody. For example, the loading screen is sloppily stitched flesh that slowly comes apart to indicate progress.

The action takes place on a war-torn planet where many races fought for centuries. Magic and science created different kinds of warfare, sparking some sort of disturbance. The planet's docile creatures (which yes, in case you were wondering, include boars) eventually became ravenous monsters, and the intelligent races were forced to scatter. Eventually those in hiding created a breed of super-soldiers called Temperions to battle the disgusting things that dominated most of the planet.

As a player, you select from three types of Temperions to play as. Each race has magic and melee skills, and you'll have to decide which types to activate and power up on your way to the level 60 cap. During your progress to the cap, you'll also be able to select a second job to further differentiate skills.

Further character customization is possible through what's called the DNA system. These slots are filled with skills purchased from NPCs, and with the correct combinations and ordering, a sixth slot can be opened up.



Then there's the possession beast system, which to access requires you run around gathering materials from creatures. With the correct components you can create a beast into which you can periodically transform. This is managed by a hardcore meter that fills as you fight enemies and do damage. Once full, the meter can be activated, allowing you to transform into whatever beast type you have slotted. If your main character is a caster class, you'd probably want a melee-type beast to get you out of precarious situations. Beasts can be leveled along with your normal character, but only gain experience while you're in beast form. Multiple beasts can be linked to each character, and there's an experience sharing system built in to keep all the beast types at relatively the same level.

Beasts' stats tend to be much higher than character, and you can equip special beast armor to strengthen them further. While in beast form, the hardcore gauge will gradually diminish, and when it empties you're transformed back to your regular character. To prolong your experience in beast mode, it's recommended you continuously fight enemies, since doing so will temporarily pause the gauge.

In some of the game's zones, a special nightmare mode is activated for a few minutes during each night cycle. At this time more powerful mobs spawn that drop better items and beast gear.



The art style resembles something you may have seen in Clive Barker's Jericho. Putrid abominations made entirely of disparate body parts attack you with massive bone cleavers and such. Even your own armor has a sinister, spiky appearance. Baddies in Bloodymare take visual damage from sword slashes, and fly to pieces upon death. You'll regularly see arms severed, bodies cleaved in two, hewn stumps of leg, and all sorts of other grotesqueries. Representatives said it wasn't just for shock value. We aren't so sure.

PvP will take place in WoW-style battleground, which we were told can range from 6 v 6 fights to 96 v 96.

There'll also be an adult storyline.

No pricing model has yet been set, but we were told it'll likely be free to play with a tiered subscription model. It's scheduled as a 2008 release.

Before the demo, we were having a hard time trying to figure out what Bloodymare could possibly mean. Might the storyline center on some kind of injured horse? One person we talked to suggested it might refer to a nightmare, only bloody. We thought of asking representatives to clarify, but honestly it's more fun to speculate.

Recently I had the opportunity to preview Akella’s latest RTS naval simulator game PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, and if WWII games are your thing and you are tired of playing aerial or ground war titles; then this game was made especially for you. With the video game market overly saturated with WWII games, Akella wanted to produce something different starring one of the most under-appreciated heroes of that era, the Patrol Torpedo Boat. Faster and easier to maneuver than a large battleship, PT Boats were used when accuracy and speed were of the utmost importance and they got the job done. Being smaller did not mean that they could not cause serious damage to a larger vessel though, because they could take a tanker down with their torpedoes - and while they were indeed more vulnerable than their larger counterparts, they were essential to any maritime battle.

As the title of the game states, these unsung heroes are the boats you will be manning and your mission is to get the job done without getting yourself blown to bits. While that is the basic premise of any video game where you are in battle, PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is a bit different than your standard war game. Your job is to not only join the battleships and carriers during battles, but you will also be called upon to escort convoys, do a bit of reconnaissance and protect strategic coastal points.



During the demo of the game, players can choose one of three sides, Allied, Germany, or the USSR in six different mission episodes and experience battles twice via either defensive or offensive mode. Now, please note that this was just a preview demo, so some of the graphics features were not running at 100%, so be rest assured that the graphics within the full game will be less banal. The map is very easy to navigate and can be viewed in 2D or 3D mode and the wonderful thing about it is that you can click on anywhere in the map grid and be taken directly to that point without having to get to your destination in real-time mode. While in map mode you can also pause the game and change your speed for up to 4x the norm.

The main issue I had with the preview were the controls - it took more time to learn them than what I would have liked. However, once you get the keyboard short-cuts down pat it is much easier to switch between screens, and you can use either the traditional WASD scheme or your arrows to move around, the enter key will switch between action and tactical screens, and the numeric keys switch positions between all the crew members, captain’s bridge and even the torpedo sight. You will use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the screen and your mouse is used to change your gun placement which will enable you to shoot down enemies from both sea and sky. My main issues with the mouse controls were when I switched screens the mouse behaves differently each time and I became frustrated when I could do one thing in one screen, but not another. Eventually this will become second nature to you, but in the beginning it was not a pleasant surprise. The press demo did not come with a control manual and though decent, the walk-thru did not tell me everything I needed to know. Hopefully this is not the case with the full version of the game.



PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is so much different than other WWII games on the market, that hopefully it will be a breath for fresh air for gamers interested in this genre. The sound quality is top-notch, the graphics will be good in the full version and support both DX9 and DX10, and controlling your boat - once you get the hang of it - is a breeze; plus there is nothing more satisfying than sinking a ship that seems thirty-times larger than yours. The full game will include multiplayer options, the ability to wield weapons on some larger ships, participate in night missions with projectors, and take part in both landing and iceberg missions.

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is powered by an improved version of the STORM 4.0 engine used in Pirates of the Caribbean. The STORM 4.0 engine enables the creation of unique special effects like ocean waves from explosions, tracing the tracks of various types of boats, illustrating the boats gliding, realistic collision damage, and damage from assorted types of ammunition.
