Several years ago after the release of AGON: The Mysterious Codex, developer Private Moon Studios announced the title for the next episode in the series: The Lost Sword of Toledo. The developer promised that the new episode would be longer, better, and a bit different than the previous 3 episodes of the series. Recently, I was invited to be a beta-tester for the game and was granted a hands-on preview of a pre-release build of this much anticipated sequel.

After the initial installation and setup, you can choose between starting the game and exploring the extras. Selecting the extras menu opens up 3 more options: Dorothy’s Table, Retrospection, and Credit List. In Dorothy’s Table, you can read letters that have been sent by Professor Samuel Hunt to Dorothy (Professor Hunt’s wife) and Smythe (Dr. Thomas Smythe) as well as letters from Dorthy and Smythe to the player (you). The writings are very amusing and make for an interesting read about the Professor’s past journeys and his earlier life. They are highly recommended. In Retrospection, you can review a brief recap of every important moment in previous episodes of the series. This allows gamers who may not otherwise have played past episodes in the series to catch up on the story before starting this game.

As the game starts, a short intro is shown to the way to the city of Toledo. There, you will find yourself in the main square inside the city. I had never visited the city of Toledo in Spain in real life before and had only seen photos of the city previously. When playing, I was amazed by the picturesque city rendered in the game. The style of buildings in the game looks almost authentic to that being depicted in the photos. Sadly, there is no way to walk about freely on the streets in the city inside the game since you can travel only on a map of the city. So, until you are enabled by the game to visit the next location, you will be unable to go there.



In contrast to past episodes, you will meet many interesting characters in this game. The characters have been given more depths than previously, with real motivations and dreams. To move onward with the story, you must get to know them and come to their aid. Some characters are good natured, while others (goons) are not. You will need to listen carefully to what they have to say. There is no need to worry if you have forgotten some important conversation, since a transcript can be viewed at any time from the game menu.

The puzzles in the game are neither too easy nor too difficult. You must be very observant, because the solutions to these brain teasers can be easily missed. There are plenty of books to read in the game: some are useful, some are not. It is advisable to read through all the books, because they have a wealth of information (that is useful not only in your gaming life). The books, as in previous episodes, are beautifully written. Some of them will provoke a smile within you, not because they are humorous but because they are based on the fictional writings of the ancient authors that are done with great emotions and care. This is why the game is amazing to experience: every piece falls into right place. At the end of the game, you will be challenged to play a local ancient board game. I had decided to keep its name a secret. So, be prepared for a surprise! What is not a secret, however, is that the developer has created a very intelligent artificial intelligence as an opponent against whom you will be playing. Winning the board game will surely not be a piece of cake!

Movement within the game is controlled by a single cursor. You simply keep the left mouse button pressed and move the mouse around to see the 360° panorama. The inventory is located at the top of the screen and is activated by pressing the inventory button. The inventory menu uses a single line display and holds 6 items at a time. The menu frustrated me, perhaps because I would like to see all the items on screen at the same time. I often had to click many times just to pick up an item from it. This is only a personal preference (basically, I am a heavy arse :wink:… ), not the fault of the designer. It is possible to keep the inventory menu visible while engaging the movement controls on screen.



The graphics in this game are done with meticulous care. The character animations have been painstakingly rendered and are beautifully detailed. Places, such as indoor rooms and the larger inner squares, looks authentic to the period of time. When you enter a room, you will notice old photographs and paintings, antique toys, and ancient books that are to the taste of the time at the turn of the century. You will also notice the “sun effect” (I chose to name it): when you turn your character’s face into the sun, everything on screen becomes lighter and brighter, until you cannot see anything but a white screen! The developer can feel proud of the sounds that are in this game. The music suits well to the scenes and the voiceovers are clear and well acted by the cast. Together, the graphics and the sounds make for a great atmosphere.

The main protagonist, Professor Hunt, is a gentle character and you will grow fond of him. The other characters are also interesting and many of them have a witty demeanor. The story is engaging: dark secrets, family revenge, a love story, and a lost sword (of course). Even the fate of the Professor is uncertain until the end.

It appears that Private Moon Studios has finally delivered what it has promised years ago. This game is destined to be another masterpiece. After all, it is because of games such as AGON: The Lost Sword of Toledo that I love adventure games so much!

If you were a PC gamer during the 1980s, you might remember the car-combat game Deathtrack. At least that's what developer 1C is hoping, because it's bringing the franchise back to the PC (and most likely the Xbox 360 as well). We snagged some hands-on time with the PC version of the game at E3 2007.

Death Track (yes, two words this time) is set in a post-World War III world where people have seemingly decided that regular racing is boring. So in an effort to spice things up they've mounted weapons to their race cars. Of course, these weapons aren't just for show. After all, the easiest opponent to pass is one whose vehicle is a smoldering wreck on the side of the road.

As with pretty much all racing games, the objective here is to finish first, but you'll want to look good doing it since you earn points for doing stunts off the ramps found on each course. These points will open up shortcuts on tracks and they can also be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades. The car we drove was equipped only with a machine gun, but it was enough to take out several opponents who had the nerve to get in front of us. While we made our way around the track we snagged some nitrous pickups as well as what appeared to be score multipliers.



Death Track isn't expected to be released until mid-2008, which is probably a good thing because the demo was a bit rough around the edges. The keyboard controls worked fine for basic maneuvers, but tight turns were difficult and controlling a car in midair didn't work very well. These issues led to several occasions where we were brought to a screeching halt by a seemingly innocuous encounter with a wall. There were also a few times when our car landed on its roof and just sat upside down for several seconds after a jump.

The game did have a nice frame rate, though there wasn't much going on to tax the graphics engine. The design of our car was cool, but it didn't cast a shadow on the road and there wasn't any car damage in place just yet.

Our brief experience with Death Track was underwhelming, but with so much time between now and the game's tentative release date, we're hopeful that 1C is able to realize the game's potential.

In an alternate universe, you've been playing EA Montreal's cooperative-focused mercenary shooter Army of Two since November, when the game was originally slated for release. But since we're bound to this physical reality for the moment, a universe in which EA instead opted to slide Army of Two's release date back a few months for tweaking and polish, we just got to check out a nearly finished build of the game today at EA's corporate headquarters in Redwood City, California. Both cooperative campaign and competitive multiplayer modes were on offer during our demo.

The good news is, the developers in Montreal have been using the extra few months of production time to examine what was already essentially a completed game to see how they could improve it. For instance, the heads-up display has been significantly refined and simplified, with less and smaller iconography crowding the screen now to afford a better view of the action. On the graphical side, the developers implemented a new lighting model that's meant to better highlight subtle touches like the bump-mapped fine details on the character models, in answer to criticism that some parts of the game were previously too dark and visually bland.



One of the big changes is the new teammate-resuscitation system. Gone is the old tampon-based minigame, which literally had you staunching the blood flow from your compatriot's wounds with a feminine hygiene product. Aside from looking a little strange, this mechanic also rendered the downed teammate completely useless and also took both players out of the game and completely interrupted the action when you initiated the revival minigame. Now, when you run out of health and go down, you'll still be able to shoot from a prone position while you wait for your partner to come over and patch you up. They'll be able to drag you to safety (while you're still shooting), though you've got a bleed-out timer that ticks down all the while. If it runs out, it's game over.

We got a chance to play some matches in the game's two-versus-two multiplayer mode, called warzone. This mode drops both teams of two into the same battleground, filled with enemy soldiers that are hostile to both pairs, and starts throwing objectives at you one after the other. It's essentially a race to see which team can complete each objective first; as soon as one team finishes a given goal, the next one will come up, so only one team will reap the cash reward from each objective. The type and progression of objectives presented in a multiplayer match is randomized, so you won't ever know what you're going to be tasked with next. Of course, you can always just kill the other team to stop them in their tracks before they can meet a goal.



The objectives we saw in practice had us doing things like assassinating a particularly strong enemy, destroying a background element like a helicopter, or escorting an injured soldier to an extraction point. The cash you make from each objective will be tallied at the end of the match, with the richest team declared the winner--but you can also spend some of this money during the match to buy new weapons and upgrades, and to respawn faster when you're killed. Army of Two will only ship with four multiplayer maps out of the box--though the two maps we tried were pretty well packed with different objectives, vehicles, and turrets to play with--but EA plans to make additional maps available for a fee on a monthly basis after release.

The core single-player campaign in Army of Two hasn't changed much since our previous looks at the game, other than small tweaks like the new revival mechanic. We played a couple of missions from the middle of the storyline where Salem and Rios were chasing after a warlord in Iraq, and then later parachuting onto the deck of an aircraft carrier to take on a bunch of terrorists. Army of Two is now slated for release in early March, so come back then to find out if EA's extra development time has paid off.
