2008 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN TRANSATLANTIC FELLOWS INITIATIVE: SUMMER INSTITUTES FOR YOUTH
The U.S.Embassy in Moldova is pleased to announce the 2008 Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Initiative: Summer Institutes for Youth which will take place between June 28 to July 23,2008 and July 5 to July 30,2008 at Wake Forest University (WFU) Winston-Salem, North Carolina .
The Summer Institutes for Youth was named after the legendary American statesman and diplomat Benjamin Franklin in honor of the inspiration his own life and career provides to those who are working to strengthen transatlantic cooperation. The Summer Institutes will enable teenagers aged 15-19 to participate in an intensive, three-four week exchange program in the U.S. that focuses on the global issues that European, Central Asians, and American youth face on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Students will participate in a variety of activities such as training sessions, workshops, community-based programs, study tours, and cultural events. Participants will work together to prepare a joint project that presents and promotes the stated goals and objectives of the Initiative.

As part of the Summer Institutes, participants will explore how young people today interact with media, both as consumers and producers of information, and how freedom of expression imposes both rights and responsibilities on citizens. This initiative is intended to foster relationships among the younger generations of Europeans, Eurasians, and Americans in order to advance the global freedom agenda; to build relationships between European and American youth; and to promote awareness of shared values in light of the global challenges of the 21st Century.

Each institute will include up to 45 European, Eurasian and American students. Institute A, «The Founders», will take place from June 28 to July 23, 2008, the participant age range will be 15-17.

Institute B, «The Diplomats», will take place from July 5 to July 30, 2008, the participant age range will be 17-19.

Each of the Institutes will be three-and-one- half weeks in length and though they will overlap, almost all activities will be separate.

Activities will include leadership and media training, collaborative project development, community service, educational travel, and plans for follow-on activities.

Eligibility requirements:
— Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova
— Eligibility for a U.S. J-1 visa
— Be aged 15 to 19
— English proficiency or fluency
— Academic aptitude for the program (at least 8.00 academic average);
— Little or no prior US study or travel experience;
— Strong interest in learning more about the transatlantic relationship, the role of a free press in a democracy, and an interest in public or community service;
— Personal qualities needed to be successful participants, including maturity, strong social skills, flexibility, and open-mindedness
