The Chelsea captain’s reaction to winning a special recognition award at this evening’s ceremony suggests that Terry is on his way out despite a new contract offer.

"John Terry received a special recognition award at this evening’s Player of the Year award ceremony for making over 700 appearances for Chelsea. The 35 year-old received a fantastic reception throughout the night as supporters remain eager to show their complete backing of the defender after yet another twist in his contract saga.

Following an announcement at the beginning of Guus Hiddink’s press conference this afternoon that revealed Terry had been offered a one-year extension to his current contract, Chelsea’s captain took to Instagram to let fans know the reason the contract had not yet been signed. Terry has made no secret of the fact he wishes to remain at Stamford Bridge, the club where he has spent his entire career, but revealed that the offer he had received would mean adopting a “different role” at the club meaning he wishes to take time to consider his options.

Fast forward a few hours later and Terry was suited up with the rest of the Chelsea team to attend the annual end-of-year award ceremony. Though many were already aware that the evening was to include a tribute to Terry for his fantastic service to the Blues, his reaction and body language throughout the evening is what people were interested to see after today’s news, and unfortunately for supporters, he was extremely emotional.

After Terry’s name was read out tributes were shown from many former Chelsea greats including Gianluca Vialli, Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech and Ruud Gullit among others. Terry was noticeably touched, and stood up to acknowledge everyone in the room as numerous guests began chanting his name.

Having played 703 games for Chelsea showing nothing but passion, everyone is of course fully aware of what this club means to John Terry. His tearful emotion shown is therefore understandable following the moving tributes that were shown, though they are also more than likely to be an indicator that despite being offered a new deal, Terry will not be a Chelsea player next season.

It has been quickly picked up across social media that the board’s ‘change of heart’ over their captain’s position at the club may in fact have been no more than a cunning PR stunt. In the game of chess that has been Terry’s contract negotiations, this was Roman Abramovich’s big move. With Terry so adamant that he wishes to remain in South West London despite a very sizeable offer from China apparently being on the table, the board appear to have called their most senior player’s bluff.

At 35 years of age and considerably past his peak, John Terry will not have gone into negotiations expecting a deal that sees his current salary and first-team position maintained. His love for the club means even fairly significant downward changes in his new contract are likely to have been accepted meaning his decision to “consider” the extension proposal shows Abramovich has offered something that even Terry is thinking of rejecting.

The defender was the only award winner to not give a speech at tonight’s ceremony meaning the contract situation was never discussed. The tears that were Terry’s barrier from making any speech at all are perhaps as likely to have been caused by the board’s fresh attempt to nudge him towards the back door, as the moving messages provided by ex-teammates.

The Chelsea hierachy have essentially flipped the arrow Terry fired at them post-match in Milton Keynes back in January, and sent it back twice as fast. A move that many Blues supporters are devastated to learn has been made, has left the Chelsea captain with an extremely tough decision. It is a great shame to see the career of someone that has given so much to the club, end so politically."
