One of the pleasures of every E3 is finding those diamonds in the rough, the games that you notice out of the corner of your eye and that look like they have a lot of promise. While Alliance: The Secret War, a first-person shooter from Windward Mark Interactive, is still a way off from being released, and currently doesn't even have a publisher, we're hoping that it delivers on the promise of its premise.

The story of Alliance: The Secret War revolves around a family of soldiers. You'll be playing as different members of this family across 90 years' worth of military encounters, starting in World War I and coming all the way up to the present day. Along the way, you'll discover that there's a shadowy organization manipulating governments and fomenting all of the world's revolutionary wars for their own dark purposes.



Although we weren't treated to much of the game's storyline beyond that brief snippet, from the trailer that was on display we'd say that the gameplay is looking pretty slick. The E3 level takes place in Egypt in the early 1970s, around the time of the Yom Kippur War, and features some close-range firefights while also showing off some of the destructible environments. In one instance, a gunner in a large tower pins you down, and you're incapable of firing back, so you have to draw his fire long enough for one of your teammates to destroy the tower, which topples gloriously to the streets below. Another cool aspect of the gameplay is the ability to use dead bodies as "organic cover" (in the words of the developers); they'll take bullets and flop around as you hold them in front of you.

Note the "incapable of firing back" section of the above paragraph. That wasn't a result of a lack of ammo or anything; instead, the game keeps track of all the different real-world statistics of the different weapons you're fighting with, such as muzzle velocity, bullet distance, killing power, and so forth. (If that sounds complicated, keep in mind that Windward Mark is planning to include 200 weapons in the final game.) Primary among these are the range calculations, which are fed into an accuracy meter onscreen, which will tell you on the fly whether or not you have a chance to hit a distant target. If it's out of your range, you're more or less unable to kill him, if we understand the concept correctly, so you'll have to either switch weapons for distant targets or close in on them. Gravity is apparently also taken into effect, so if you spot a distant target with your sniper rifle, you'll have to accurately range in, or you'll wind up having your bullets drop short of your target.



One other cool thing about Alliance is its planned What If Scenario multiplayer feature. With it, server operators will be able to match up teams from different eras of warfare so that, for instance, Cuban revolutionaries could face off against World War II-era troops, or a brick of Navy Seals could take on a vastly larger group of WWI soldiers. The idea is to have technological advantages mitigated by deficiencies of numbers so that the more-advanced armies will be outnumbered by the lower-tech forces. We didn't get to see this mode on display, but it sounds like a great idea.

The one word to sum up Alliance: The Secret War at this point in time would be "ambitious." With more than 200 weapons planned for the game, multiple environments and time periods to re-create, and an ambitious multiplayer setting in the works, we can only hope that the developers manage to deliver on the potential of the idea that they're working with. Since Alliance doesn't have a publisher as of yet, it's probably not going to be released in the immediate future, but we'll try to get more information on the game as it becomes available.




Second Life creator nabs Windward Mark tech, founders
The fate of PC first-person shooter Alliance: The Silent War is in question as five key employees from developer Windward Mark Interactive have left to join Second Life creator Linden Labs.

The move comes in a deal that also sees Linden Labs acquire the rights to Windward Mark's atmospheric rendering technology WindLight, as well as the 3D cloud simulator Nimble. These technologies will be incorporated into Second Life in the coming weeks, as well as made open source.

The five employees were founders of Windward Mark, and they'll join Linden Labs' newly established Boston studio. As for Alliance: The Silent War, Windward Mark will retain the rights to the project, but a representative with the developer said it is currently determining what it would like to do with the intellectual property.

Приверженцы этой идеологии брали власть и удерживали ее, мобилизуя поддержку масс путем умелого использования средств организации и пропаганды. Людям внушали, что государство и нация превыше всего, главными ценностями являются послушание и самопожертвование, а война — высшее испытание величия народа.

Основатель движения, премьер-министр Италии Бенито Муссолини, даже предсказывал, что ХХ век станет Эрой фашизма. В те времена по всей Европе возникали националистические партии, включая Британский союз фашистов во главе с Освальдом Мосли и "Аксьон Франсез" во Франции. Расисты пришли к власти в Португалии, Австрии, Греции и Румынии, а сама идеология стала приобретать популярность даже в Бразилии и Аргентине. В 1939-м году марионеточный режим стран "оси" вверг европейский континент в войну, впоследствии охватившую пламенем весь мир.

В альтернативной вселенной, созданной руками калифорнийской студии Spark Unlimited, в начале сороковых годов под контролем альянса фашистских государств уже находилась большая часть Западной Европы. Сопротивление продолжала оказывать одна Великобритания, главным оплотом которой были флот и авиация. Но к сентябрю 1940-го года силы иссякли, и Туманный Альбион пал под натиском нацистов. Охватив все Средиземноморье, война двинулась на восток. Италия вторглась в Грецию, вступив в бой с англичанами на территории Северной и Восточной Африки, и с помощью немецкого корпуса, состоявшего лишь из одной танковой и пехотной дивизий, одержала ряд впечатляющих побед.

Параллельно с вышеописанными событиями Гитлер приобрел союзников в Восточной Европе, покорил Югославию и 22 июня 1941-го года двинул многомиллионную армию на СССР. На протяжении нескольких лет кровопролитные бои шли на суше, море и в воздухе, но советские войска так и не сумели переломить хребет Третьему Рейху и сдались оккупантам. В 1953-м году влияние нацистского режима распространилось на все континенты — исключение составляла только Америка. Стремясь окончательно поработить земной шар, лавина войск СС и гестапо ринулась на территорию США.

Жители города всегда готовы прийти на помощь в борьбе с оккупантами

Партизанское движение

Молниеносным ударом Германия оккупировала Вашингтон и высадила десант на восточном побережье, взламывая оборону противника. Вам в этом противостоянии отводится роль молодого человека по имени Дэн Карсон, проживающего в Нью-Йорке и работающего высотником в строительной организации. Будучи обычным жителем города, он, как и тысячи других людей, сначала попытался спастись бегством от наседающих эсэсовцев. Но поняв, что вырваться из оцепленного города невозможно, примкнул к подпольному движению освобождения, основная задача которого — формирование отрядов сопротивления и совершение диверсионных вылазок.

Собираясь в группы и вооружаясь всеми доступными средствами, Дэн вместе с остальными жителями выстраивает на улицах баррикады, устанавливает неприступные заслоны и возводит укрепления в зданиях. Четкое распределение задач между соратниками по команде для них является залогом успеха. Обчищая, к примеру, захваченный противником оружейный склад, необходимо оставить на улице пару человек для контроля прилегающей территории; затем, разделившись на команды, осмотреть помещение и устранить охрану, после чего отправить кого-нибудь за машиной, а остальным приказать выносить ящики с боеприпасами. По аналогичной схеме осуществляется налет на госпиталь, хранилище продуктов или центр радиовещания и подрыв электростанции или штаба.

Боевые действия не прекращаются ни на секунду

Не входя в состав американской армии, бойцы подпольной армии лишены какого-либо снабжения. Холодное и огнестрельное оружие, средства защиты, камуфляж и медикаменты — все это им приходится доставать самостоятельно. Как правило, любое снаряжение снимается с тел убитых — у них, помимо гранат, автоматов, пистолетов и снайперских винтовок можно разжиться очками инфракрасного зрения "Вампир" и бронежилетами. Неприглядность мародерства с точки зрения морали в такие моменты отходит на второй план.

Один в поле воин

Командные миссии то и дело перемежаются с одиночными заданиями, ложащимися на плечи бывшего высотника. Как правило, это разведывательные операции, минирование территорий, освобождение захваченных в плен людей и помощь военным. В зависимости от поставленной задачи Дэн действует либо самостоятельно, либо в составе группы поддержки. В первом случае путь и метод достижения поставленной цели можно выбирать самостоятельно, во втором его определит начальство. В конце концов, борясь за свободу своей страны, Карсон остается всего лишь винтиком в военной машине.

Как правило, героями подобных игр являются не живые люди, а полуфантастические персонажи, способные на нечеловеческие поступки. В центре же внимания Turning Point — среднестатистический парень, который взялся за оружие по воле судьбы. Слегка отойдя от привычных стереотипов, сценаристы решили передать весь ужас событий глазами обычного человека. Ведь только так можно понять трагизм любой войны.

*Выход игры намечен на ноябрь 2007 года.

A former warrior who now lives as a humble basket weaver in the seaside village of Hagana.  Though he abandoned his clan, one of the worst offenses a samurai can commit, Zenjiro's motives were unselfish.  He disagreed with his lord's military campaigns and wanted to ensure he could raise a family, in peace, with his wife.  Though he still wears the daisho and top knot, they primarily serve to remind him each day of the man he used to be, and how much he has changed.  Beneath the warrior's exterior, Zenjiro has been a hard working husband and father, nothing more, for many years.

Takama
Age: 24



Orphaned when he was a child, Takama was taken in by Masayo, an old tea master who taught him the ways of Zen and the preparation of tea ceremonies.  Though raised under the tutelage of such a wise and peaceful man, it wasn't long before people realized Takama had a natural affinity for combat as well; defeating several members of a nearby kendo school in a duel.  When Masayo retired, Takama took his place as tea master, serving the local lord and his guests to great acclaim.  Over the years, Takama has learned that seeing and hearing everything in a castle has its advantages...

Hanbei
Age: 42



A ronin with a clouded past and a reputation for gambling, drink, and murder.  His migration to Hagana village was clearly the result of trying to outrun the authorities.  Just four months after his arrival, a man was mysteriously murdered and a little girl went missing.  It is rumored his ear was sliced off by the bodyguard of an official he attacked in a nearby province.

Shiho
Age: 9



Disease having taken her mother away, Shiho lives in Hagana with her widowed father, a famous Noh theater performer.  Exceptionally bright for one so young, Shiho already finds herself concerned with the mysteries of life, death, and the universe.  She has a fantastic imagination as well, and often escapes her troubles by donning a Noh mask and pretending to be a hero or spirit.

Osugi
Age: 88

Born and raised in Etchu province, she was wife to the elder of Hagana.  After his passing, she took his place, and did her best to make the most of an unfortunate situation.  Having lived so long through such turbulent times, Osugi has seen many highs and lows, and enjoys offering her wisdom to those in need.

Norimasa
Age: 50

Though he hails from Edo, the vast metropolis serving as the seat of power for the Tokugawa Shogunate, Norimasa visits Etchu province on official business.  Devoted to his role as an enforcer of the law, he nonetheless sees little to celebrate in the rigid class structure under the Tokugawa, nor is he happy with the loss of personal freedoms as a means to promote peace.

Earlier today, during a brief meeting with developer Acony Games, we were treated to our first look at the previously unannounced Parabellum. At first glance, the upcoming shooter appeared to be little more than a technically impressive Counter-Strike clone, but it didn't take us long to realize that the guys at Acony have far more ambition than that.

It's true that the Delta Force-versus-terrorists theme of Acony's offering bears more than a passing resemblance to that of Counter-Strike, and if you've ever played that game, you might also recognize Parabellum's bomb-disarming counterterrorist missions, which task the good guys with locating and deactivating a nuclear bomb that's been planted somewhere in the city. That's pretty much where the similarities end, though, and where Parabellum starts to introduce some quite exciting features of its own into the mix.

For starters, the city that the Delta Force is attempting to save in Parabellum (which looks an awful lot like New York) comprises 12 distinct maps arranged on a grid with industrial, commercial, and residential themes. At the start of each timed campaign game, the terrorist players will get to choose which map they want to plant the bomb in, and then it's up to the Delta Force to find it. The time limit that you choose for the game should determine how many of the city's maps are in play, though this won't necessarily happen automatically. After a campaign gets underway, the Delta Force players will need to defeat the terrorists on the current map before getting to choose which adjacent map to fight them on next, as they continue their search for the bomb. If the terrorists win a map, the same one will be played again--eating away at the Delta Force's time limit.



When the Delta Force team chooses a new map, they'll find that each one can be played from four different starting points (or in four different directions, if you prefer), so although there will only ever be 12 maps that need to be searched, there are 48 different gameplay experiences available. It's not yet clear whether or not the Delta Force will get to choose how the map is played or if that will be determined by which direction they're coming into the map from. What we do know, though, is that if the terrorist players correctly guess which map the Delta Force will choose to move into after winning a game, they'll have an opportunity to spawn early and set up an ambush for the good guys.

The first map that we got to see the Delta Force scouring was from the city's industrial zone and incorporated a building site and what appeared to be a factory of some description. When bullets started flying around the rain-soaked level, we noticed that practically every object in the nicely detailed environment appeared to be destructible to some degree, including a water tower high above the ground that leaked out of bullet holes when it was shot.



The destructibility of the maps will have a noticeable impact on gameplay in Parabellum, not only because you'll be able to destroy items that could provide cover, but also because one of the three different ammo types available to you (which can be switched on the fly) is capable of shooting clean through up to 20 meters of wall. To show us how this might be useful, the Acony representative who was demoing the game fired off a few rounds at a wall that he suspected an enemy might be hiding behind. There was no enemy on this occasion, but if there had been, he would've ended up looking like Swiss cheese. It might also have been possible to take out the enemy by shooting from around a corner, since Parabellum supports ricocheting bullets, but it seemed like most of the projectiles ended up splashing harmlessly into puddles when this feature was demonstrated.

After watching a couple of fast-paced battles on the industrial map, we had an opportunity to check out a very different one set inside a large subway station--complete with deadly moving trains. After exploring the map for a while and showing off its impressive level of detail, the Acony player found the nuclear bomb (you're unlikely to miss it if you're in the vicinity since it's quite large) and disarmed it with just a few seconds of the campaign's 10-minute time limit to spare.

Parabellum currently supports up to 32 players simultaneously, but the maps have apparently all been designed with six-on-six battles in mind at this point. Based on the two maps that we saw, we'd say that slightly larger groups of players shouldn't pose any problems, but a full roster of 32 would almost certainly make the game feel a bit overcrowded.

One of Parabellum's features that we didn't get to see in action is the weapon-selection screen, which we understand you'll use to customize your arsenal before each round. In addition to ammo, range, and rate-of-fire considerations, you'll need to bear in mind the weight of the weapons you choose, since heavier options will purportedly slow down your movement quite noticeably.

Our time with Acony Games and Parabellum came to an end all too quickly, but not before we heard about the company's plans to get gaming clans involved in the game's beta testing, to release a map editor for the community, and to get the game published sometime in 2007--provided it's finished. We look forward to bringing you more information on Parabellum in the near future.
