UPDATE: Since we published this story, Variety has announced that Paramount is calling the movie simply The Last Airbender, to avoid confusion with James Cameron's Avatar, and that the movie has been given a US release date of July 2, 2010.

If you're a person who laments the decline of the Saturday morning kids cartoon genre, then you should really check out Avatar: The Last Airbender. It may not currently be on TV (we've not been getting up early), but it's available on DVD and it's properly brilliant; beautifully animated and very well written for kids' entertainment. M Night Shyamalan is currently in pre-production adapting the cartoon into a movie trilogy, so now is really the time to get yourself familiar with it.

We chatted with Shyamalan recently and he filled us in on a few details of the movie. For those who don't know the show, he explains the plot thusly:

"The actual plot is in a place where there are four tribes of people. And these people each have people within their tribe that have mastery over one element: water, earth, fire or air. They all live in a balance and harmony and once every generation there is born an individual who can bend - that is manipulate -all four of those elements and thereby keep a balance between all. They are kind of a Buddha figure to some extent. The story is about how, in this particular time, this avatar is born into the airbenders and disappears. Then all hell breaks loose and the fire nation basically commits genocide and eradicates the air tribe in the hopes of killing the avatar and taking over control of everything. This child then re-emerges, which is the beginning of our story. He reappears having been frozen in the ice — there is a whole story about how that happens — a hundred years later and this world is all fucked up and he is the last airbender, but he doesn’t want this job. He’s forced into the position of putting the world back together again. It actually has a lot of Shakespearean overtones to it. There’s lots of family angst, and fathers denying sons in different storylines."

That all clear? Short version is, there's a small boy called Aang who has the potential to control all the elements and everyone wants to capture him. Shyamalan says it was the mythology and philosophy inherent in the story that attracted him to it.

"Buddhist and Hindu philosophies run through the stuff," he continues. "When I realised that is what it was, it really drew me as the template for putting storytelling on a new level. There is a kind of thread that connects Star Wars and The Matrix – the first one. That same thread is in this story, about a forgotten belief system, or the illusion of the world now."

Of course, philosophy doesn't necessarily guarantee bums on seats. But this is a film that has a great deal of potential for incredible spectacle. The most powerful of the element benders can do great things with their powers, like controlling a raging river or manipulating walls of flame. Done right, this should have some incredible action.

"Obviously [there will be] some breathtaking visual effects," the director says. "Just imagine if you saw a little girl bending water out of a glass into the air as an extension of her own personal discipline. It’s three movies about the hero learning three elements. Live action".

But, equally, Shyamalan doesn't want the film, which he says will shoot on stages in Philadelphia, as well as locations including Greenland, to simply be an excuse for empty spectacle. He also acknowledges that this is a long way from anything he's done before. It's got the philosophical elements he likes, but it's also painting on a much larger canvas than any of his other films and speaking to a younger audience.

"It’s daunting on the level of not doing it properly," he admits. "It can’t be special effects for the sake of special effects, it has to be [that you use] take seven because the girl breathes properly on take seven. I have to tell the animators that. Everything, has to have that detail. I can’t leave it. I have to make sure that I make it the same kind of storytelling, but with just one more tool."

Like we say, this is very different to anything Shyamalan's done before, but we can really see him making this work. Whether you like all his movies or not, you can't deny the man is blessed with a lot of imagination. And that's exactly what a project like this needs – someone who can wrestle the multiple ideas of the show into a simple, coherent and visually amazing film. This should, and hopefully will be, fantastic.

* Ноа Рингер, исполнитель роли Аанга, получил главную роль к фильму, пройдя интернет-кастинг. Он отправил видео со своим исполнением Тэквандо на DVD и был утвержден.
* Ввиду того, что Ноа Рингеру 12 лет, ему запрещено проводить на съемочной площадке круглые сутки, создатели фильма прибегнули к трюку, взяв еще одного мальчика с похожим телосложением, поэтому в некоторых кадрах стоящего спиной Аанга будет исполнять некий Эрик Джуэл.
* Режиссер целенаправленно сделал некоторых героев эпопеи старше с целью увеличения целевой аудитории фильма.

He wrote the spec-script for The Last Airbender 2 while production for the first film was being prepared. It will not likely go into production until late 2010, early 2011.

Deci, nici n-am privit filmul pînă la sfîrşit....e CAM + ....... plictisitor

Actori

Ce pot să spun...actorii nu sunt strălucitori, care şi cum...
Aang prea serios...dacă ne amintim în desen era aşa:

dar în film, e serios, nu i-am văzut faţa zîmbăreaţă...

Sokka în film e agresiv, parkă era "mort/mut" hz, ceva nu-i ajungea, parkă era narcoman xD cînd mă uitam la faţa lui....

în desen îl vedem altfel, vesel şi glumeţ.

Katara.....no comment...

aşa urîtă..nuştiu după ce criteriu a fost aleasă

Efecte/Action

Efecte:

Nuştiu despre ce "efecte" mergea vorba, dar nu am văzut EFECTE ! Chiar la început, cînd Aang a fost descoperit în sfera din gheaţă, putea să arate cum se sparge, cum sar bucăţile de gheaţă, (ca o explozie, ceva fantastic trebuiau să facă, dar nu, a arătat deja cum totul era stricat...)

Acţiuni:

hmm...bătăi.....care bătăi ? s-a "împroşcat" puţin cu foc, şi apă...acestea au fost numite action-uri...

Nu am văzut nici o lovitură cu picioarele, dacă merge vorba de Taekwondo...Să fluture din mîini poate oricine.

Deci in sfarsit a venit ziua...
Din cauza ca nu prea am timp, am hotarit totusi sa ma duc la cinema inainte de serviciu.
Fost ieri la Avatar cu un prieten. Ambii suntem fani ai acestui desen animat, fani intariti, stim multee detalii despre caractere, diferite denumiri, you get the idea.
Well, ce sa zic... story-telling-ul a fost ok, adica katara ca narator povestea ce si cum se petrecea normal. Nu mi-a placut development-ul personajelor. Da, e putin timp, insa sunt multe filme de 1.5 ore in care personajele (cel putin principale) sunt descrise foarte bine, astfel ca sa le simtim personalitatea, emotiile, etc.. Aici insa totul a fost grabit si ne-explicat. Nu sunt sigur care ar fi recatia unei persoane care nu a privit desenul animat, adica daca a inteles ceva cum se cade sau nu.. Si sunt sigur ca nu a ramas cu impressi pozitive despre personaje. Aang, katara, sokka.. trei copii care fara frica inconjoara lumea, trecand prin aventuri nemaipomenite si foarte periculoase, insa pe care ei le considera ca un joc (in multe cazuri), si le trec fara probleme si cu zambet. in film nu vedem aceste chestii, cu parere de rau...
Scenele cu bataia au fost foaaarte scurte. Abia intrai in ritmul miscarilor si gata - cut!
Also mi-a placut scena cand Aang face training cu un waterbender master, efectele au fost destul de bune, anume momentul cand Aand "dezintegreaza" bilele (nici nustiu cum sa spun) de apa pana ea se evapora.. it was awesome

ina mi-a placut scena cand Aang intra in starea de Avatar, prima data.. au transmis emotiile foarte bine, imho.
O scena foarte rea a fost cand Aang si prietenii au ajuns in ba sing se (vrode) si a inceput sa incurajeze populatia locala sa se lupte cu fire nation's warriors. it was so lame, that i was almost crying...
Vedeti aceasta secventa si o sa intelegeti: (no spoilers, just watch, like a trailer)

Mi-a placut personajul lui Appa, cel mai tare vriam sa-l vad, deoarece in trailer nu a aparaut din start... It was nice, but short.
Si inca ceva, ei au alterat un pic originalul. Spre sfarsit, cand moare spiritul lunei, aang intra in starea de avatar si se transforma intr-o creatura gigantica din apa, care face valuri si-i alunga pe fire nation. In film insa Aang pur si simplu vine la zid si intrind in starea de avatar face un val mare si-i alunga pe raufacatori. Cam simplu s-a primit, au economisit la efecte.
Zuco a jucat bine, insa iarasi, i-a fost alocat putin timp. mai ales cand a aparut sub alias-ul the blue spirit.. totul a fost foate spontan si rapid...
Mai am multe de vorbit, insa deja e 5:43
Privit filmul si faceti-va concluzii. Nu zic ca-i super rau, pentru prima carte e ok. Ii dau crezare producer-ului, deoarece chiar e comlicat sa bagi un desen animat de 20 de episoade in 1.5 ore... Un desen animat in care fiecare episod e important si care ne ajuta sa intelegem lumea Avatar-ului

eu ink mai aveam de gind sa plec la cinema sa-l privesk... k sa-l astept in calitate buna pe tracker era prea mult de asteptat pentru mine... insa acum dupa ce am vazut the earthbending scene... DAMN!... that was so epicly lame... nici nush dak il voi mai privi... asa un pff au facut din anime...

imi pare k o sa-l privesk doar dak va fi intr-un HD1080 si nu voi avea absolut nimic ce face...

P.S. pare rau pentru k am asteptat atita timp cu atita nerabdare asa un film...

Fa cum am facut eu, adica totusi du-te la cinema, insa miercurea viitoare. Biletul costa 75 lei, daca esti abonat MDCell platesti pt un bilet si al doilea il primesti gratis. Se primeste 35 de lei pt bilet, e ok, acceptable.

Scena cu earthbending intr-adevar e totally lame, but you could give it a try
