This indeed is a very commercialized holiday, yes holiday because most people get today off. It's all about flowers, gifts and chocolate. And even the women have no fucking idea what it's really about(well not all of them of course, but a vast majority don't). They're also fueled with unrealistic gift expectations, because of what they see other men giving their wife/girlfriends/mother; and it becomes kinda like a "race" of who gets the most awesome gift. In fact to me it feels like women just expect to get special treatment and gifts on this day, but how can we celebrate equality like that? To me it seems stupid that equality is celebrated by only 1 side, that side getting all the attention and presents and special treatment. While it does make sense, because it's the women that finally obtained equal rights, I still think there should be some kind of solidarity that is absent, and it's absence makes me think that it's not true equality. It's kinda like saying you're a feminist because you want equal rights for men and women, but if you're shooting for the extreme how to expect to land in the middle? I just wish people gave it more thought before just buying presents senselessly and "congratulating" other women without even having any idea WHY they're doing it and even doing it for all the wrong reasons. People seem to think today is the day of women, and their greatness and how we would be doomed without women(which I partly agree, because they definitely balance us guys), but that's not what they should be congratulating them for. In fact if women were also men, this holiday would be something like guys giving each other firm handshakes and exchanging simple words to mark their mutual gratitude and agreement that they are equal! But instead of that it just creates more tension between men and women and couples, senseless bickering about high expectations not being met(gift wise), and if they don't argue about it, very often girls are secretly disappointed with what they got or didn't get. I hope you don't think I'm against this holiday, I am merely against what it has become, which is a vile mutation from something beautiful.
