Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger
Genre: First-Person Shooter / Real-Time Strategy
Publisher: SouthPeak Interactive / Evolved Games
Developer: Atomic Motion
Platforms: PC Xbox 360
Release Date: October 28, 2008
Official Site: www.southpeakgames.eu/games/RavenSquad
Universe: ---

Could Atomic Motion be the first developer to successfully blend RTS and FPS gameplay? We take a closer look at Raven Squad to find out...

RTS-FPS hybrid games have popped up on our radar before, but we're racking our brains to recollect one that's successfully made it onto the marketplace. Sure, there was Command & Conquer: Renegade, but that was actually a pure FPS game that adopted some aspects of the C&C format (e.g. primary, secondary, and tertiary objectives). Other than its setting within the C&C universe, there weren't really any RTS elements to its gameplay.

So, can Raven Squad be the first game to successfully merge the two genres? If our recent first look at the game is anything to go by, then it's actually got a fair shot at this lofty task. There's certainly the risk that the game could be spread too thinly across both genres, producing a title that will please neither hardcore RTS fans nor seasoned FPS veterans. That said, nobody is suggesting that the RTS elements of Atomic Motion's Raven Squad will rival those in games such as World in Conflict or Company of Heroes.

Instead, Raven Squad should really be seen as a squad based FPS with a large side order of RTS gameplay to boot. You take control of two squads in the game, each of which has four members. One squad (called the Assault Squad) are experts in heavy weapons - they're your all-guns-blazing portion of the outfit, led by the inscrutable Paladin. Then there's the stealth section of the brigade called the Infiltration Squad, which is led by the wits of the eight man team, Shadow.

These eight militants are from a team of mercenaries who were sent into the Amazon to retrieve a package (at a hefty cost to their contractors of course), but everything goes awry when their plane is shot down over the jungle - only the Infiltration and Assault squads survive. It's then up to Paladin, Shadow, and their band of soldiers to continue the mission, the primary objective of which soon turns to survival after the two squads get caught up in a civil war (the Amazon jungle being as likely a place as any for such a conflict).

Players can switch between the members of each squad at will, which will be the key to getting the most out of the game's weapons. Each team member can be suited up with a primary weapon (which has infinite ammo), and a skill weapon with limited ammo stores. And then there's the RTS mode itself, which moves from the first-person perspective into a familiar top-down camera at the touch of a button whenever you please. An Atomic Motion rep explained to us that the soldiers can see themselves from this aerial perspective due to satellite imagery of their position and computer generation of the data. Right... and you can switch between characters with some kind of clairvoyance presumably.

Anyway, the transition into the RTS mode is seamless with no loading screens. In fact, it's all part of the same streaming game world within the same game engine. The way you use the two squads in this RTS mode is crucial. Because you can only move one squad at a time, the best way to advance is with a leapfrogging strategy (i.e. ordering one squad to advance while the other supplies covering fire and vice-versa). During combat we saw a number of basic RTS commands in action including defensive and active stances (which affect the squads' operational areas), while basic attack orders could also be made such as opening fire and throwing grenades. We're sure that the final game will have much more complexity in its strategy than this (our first look was with an early beta build), but the basics seemed to be well integrated from what we could gather.

FPS gameplay also looked fairly solid. Again, given the early state of the build and our lack of hands on experience, it was difficult to get a good look at what Atomic Motion had under Raven Squad's hood. Even the weapons were placeholder at this stage in development, and the character models were certainly in a stage of transition (we were told that textures still have to be added to some of the NPCs). The environments, on the other hand, looked stunning from both the RTS and FPS perspectives. At ground level, Raven Squad's jungle environments were lush enough to put it in Crysis' league. If Crytek's visual masterpiece is a Man Utd or Chelsea in the league of tropical game environments, then Raven Squad is perhaps a Blackburn, but that's very impressive for such an early build of a game that straddles both FPS and RTS gameplay.

Atomic Motion is also promising a 2 player co-op campaign for Raven Squad. As you might expect, players will take command of one squad each, which could get interesting if you can only move one squad at a time in the RTS mode. Nevertheless, Atomic Motion hopes to get both the PC and Xbox 360 versions out simultaneously and the game is currently slated for release during the tail end of 2008.

stirea originala

Quote:

Speaking at Games Convention last week, Far Cry 2 narrative chap Patrick Redding confirmed Ubi Montreal is at the “preliminary stages” with the “next game” in the Far Cry series, and that the team now has a “commitment to the African setting.”

“For us Africa still has a huge amount of promise,” Redding told VG247 at the German event when asked specifically if further Far Cry products will be set in Africa.

“There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it’s safe to say we’ll continue to explore it.

“That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we’re still at the preliminary stages.”

Redding said that the team has “made a commitment to the African setting” earlier on in a demo of Far Cry 2.

He added that the FC2 engine is flexible enough to allow them to makes games in any locale, but that an extension of the African setting in further games is likely to “save time.”

“If we wanted to make the next game set in the… forest of South America, we could do it,” he said.

“But I think to save time, for us, one of the reasons we chose to use the African setting is because we felt that in order to retain the Far Cry brand value, of an exotic, dangerous environment, a place that maybe people haven’t had a chance to see themselves, or have seen extensively in film, television and other games, we wanted to choose Africa.

“Let’s face it, jungle islands are probably less exciting as they were four years ago.”

Far Cry 2’s out on PC, PS3 and 360 before the end of the year.

Venetica
Genre: Role-Playing
Publisher: DTP Entertainment
Developer: Deck 13
Platforms: PC Xbox 360
Release Date: TBA 2009
Official Site: www.venetica-game.com
Universe: ---

Allow us, if you will, a short time to celebrate. As big fans of the point-and-click genre we’re always praying for a good graphic adventure, and while this isn’t quite what we had in mind there’s plenty of reason to rejoice. Deck 13 is an established adventure game developer and their latest project is an RPG with all the charm of their usual work. It’s bright, it’s bold and it’s clean which is just what we’ve been craving. As much as we love Marcus Fenix and his muscle-y friends, there’s only so much grey we can take, so a vibrant fantasy world is a welcome respite.

Venetica tells the tale of Scarlett, the secret daughter of Death. It happens that Death isn’t an everlasting skeletal being but a common man elected by council whenever there’s a vacancy, and when Victor, the next in line, begins to study necromancy and other evils (more evil than Death? Really?), he is thrown out and an opening is created. Scarlett, upon inheriting her father’s powers, is the only person who can defeat the now undead Victor. Some extremely hammy voice acting aside, Venetica is a game we’re very excited about. In terms of presentation the game is reminiscent of recent Deck 13 adventure Ankh; an art style we don’t see often. When quizzed about the inspirations for Venetica, the game’s producer was quick to drop names such as Fable, Twilight Princess, Baldur’s Gate and, er… TV hit Alias. The first sums it up best. Judging by the features we saw this is just like Fable. That’s Fable, not Fable 2, mind.

Chin up, though - a new, better take on Fable is no bad thing. Venetica follows a fairly linear storyline, but there’s plenty of opportunity to alter Scarlett’s progression thanks to branching missions and skill trees which allow you to choose how she develops. Conversations can be directed down whatever route you wish thanks to a comprehensive list of options, and many of the tasks depend on what you say. A revolving day/night cycle is employed to further mix things up. At one point Scarlett is asked to find a certain type of weed. After some digging around it becomes apparent that this particular plant grows only in the moonlight, and so she must search the rooftops at night to find it.

These rooftops are interesting locations in Venetica; the ladders and makeshift bridges give the heavens a surprisingly labyrinthine quality. Winged demons are always on the prowl, but stumble onto the wrong roof and you could find more than you bargained for. As we watched our guide chase a double-crossing merchant through a pub and onto its roof we lost sight of him for a few seconds. When we eventually caught up he was lying face down, dead, in the starlight. With nothing in sight we began to make our way back to the streets, until the stone lion next to us sprang to life and attacked. Don’t you hate it when that happens...?

It was the perfect opportunity to understand how the combat system works. Like Fable 2, button-mashing will be fine but there’s an underlying complexity for those wanting a little more. Rhythmically tapping the attack button unleashes combo moves, whereas nonsensical hammering will, eventually, lead to her being blocked and countered unless she retreats and rethinks. Weapon choice is key, as well. Attacking the stone lion with a sword proved to be a fruitless task as the steel blade simply bounced off, but a giant hammer made short work of the beast as its face was smashed apart piece by piece. The estimated thirty hours of play isn’t to be sniffed at, for an RPG-lite. Venetica’s looking extremely promising then, but the danger is that by the time it’s ready for release, Fable 2 will have set an unassailable benchmark. For now, Venetica remains an unsual, promising blip on the radar – one we’re happy to see shining brightly.

ArmA II
Genre: Modern First-Person Shooter
Publisher: 505 Games
Developer: Bohemia Interactive
Platforms: PC Xbox 360 Playstation 3
Release Date: Q1 2009
Official Site: www.arma2.com
Universe: ArmA: Combat Operations (PC | 2007), ArmA: Gold Edition (PC | 2008), ArmA: Queen's Gambit (PC | 2007)

Campaign

In Chernarus, civil war has raged for two years after a long period of political instability, caused by conflicts between a pro-Western coalition and communist-nationalist Chernarus Red Star Movement (ChDKZ, „Chedaki“). After ChDKZ was defeated by the democratic wing in the 2008 elections, tension escalated during the so-called September Crisis.

With wide support from ethnic Russians in the Northern Province of Chernarus, insurgents attempted to reunite Northern Chernarus with Russia by force, but were defeated in the counter-insurgency operation „Northwind“. By the summer of 2009, remaining insurgent troops retreated to hideouts in the northern mountains.

In the autumn of 2009, „Chedaki“ surprisingly launched a major assault on government forces, led by infamous supreme warlord, nicknamed Akul („Shark“). In a few weeks insurgents seized most of the Northern Province, and declared independence from the Chernarussian government.

After negotiations to join Russia resulted in dismissal by Moscow, insurgents installed their own government and declared martial law, continuing to advance to the western part of the country. Government forces suffered heavy losses and the situation became critical. Alexander Baranov, the prime minister of Chernarus, asked NATO forces to assist in restoring peace and order in Chernarus.

The Alliance alerts its rapid reaction forces in the Euro-Asian theater. It is decided to send Marines to the area to prevent further civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict between „Chedaki„ and remnants of Chernarussian Defence Forces. A Marine Expeditionary Force is deployed to take control of the situation.

Campaign features

-Multiple endings
-Non-linear freeform gameplay
-Dynamic conversation with NPC‘s
-Believable story plot based on actual geopolitical situation

Chernarus

-225 km2 of real world data
-1 million 3D objects
-350 kilometers of roads
-50 cities and villages
-Hilly rural landscape with rocky coastline
-Living environment including civilian population and wild life

North-Eastern Chernarus is a hilly area with rocky coastlines; the biggest hilltops reach over 700 m above sea level, covered by temperate forests. The environment is still relatively untouched from logging and mining. The biggest cities and industry are concentrated on the southern coast. There are mostly smaller villages inland, situated in deep valleys, hidden in forested ridges or on elevated plateaus with lush meadows.

Vehicles

ARMA 2 features an assortment of over 50 unique vehicle types, both military and civilian; many of these are present in different versions with varying armament and/or camouflage resulting in more than 120 fully playable vehicles.

All the game factions have their own typical selection of vehicles: from the most advanced technology used by the USMC or armed forces of the Russian Federation, to old Cold-War era vehicles used by local government forces and insurgents.

Weapons

ArmA 2 offers more than 40 personal weapons and man-portable rocket launchers of both Western and Eastern origin in more than 80 variations, sporting different aiming devices or accessories. The accuracy and power of each weapon was configured based on real-life ammunition as well as feedback on weapon behaviour based on the real-life experience of our military advisors. Not only does ammunition type influence the power of a round, but also the number and colour of tracers, which were also designed according to real-life specifications.

The factions you meet in the game use their own assortment of pistols, assault rifles, rocket launchers, sniper rifles and machineguns. Special Forces use a multitude of unique personal weaponry, including silenced and camouflaged weapons or special designed configurations, typical to the Russian Spetsnaz. Troops use advanced anti-air and anti-armour rocket launchers, guerrillas stick with older design guided rockets and proven RPG-7. Together with commonly used sniper rifles, there are also high-calibre sniper rifles in camouflaged variants to go with sniper‘s ghillie suits.

Team Gameplay

Team is key. Unlike most war simulations, ArmA II focuses on team play - including co-operative play, the ability to switch between team members and dramatic moments when you must give first aid to team mates.

Luckily, in the main game story, you will have the chance to lead one of the most skilled special operations teams within the United States Marine Corps: force recon team Razor.

-Cooperative gameplay
-Team switch option
-New easy to use commanding interface
-New micro ai for team mates and enemies, now they use cover, hide and work better as a unit
-Comprehensive simulation of suppressive fire
-Razor Team with unique personalities
