We've been anxious to get our hands on LucasArts and Traveller's Tales' latest tag-team effort, Lego Indiana Jones, since the game was first announced last year. The publisher-and-developer pairing has yielded some Voltron-like results with the Lego Star Wars games, so we've been understandably curious to see what happens when you mix Legos and Indiana Jones. A recent trip to LucasArts' offices finally let us try out a work-in-progress version of the Xbox 360 game which, while a little rough around the edges, is on its way to matching the appeal of the Lego Star Wars games.

For those who haven't followed the news around the game, Lego Indy is taking a Lego Star Wars: The Complete Trilogy-style approach to the classic trilogy of films starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The game will offer 18 levels, with six based on each of the films in the series, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. In addition, you'll find some bonus levels in there to add some excitement. You'll make your way to each set of levels via the game's hub based on Jones' day job as a professor at Barnett College. Our hands-on time let us try out the first two levels in the game based on Raiders and have a stroll through Barnett.

The first level in the game was pretty familiar to us because it was the level demoed for us during Game Developers Conference and based on the opening of the first film. You'll take control of Indy and his "friend" Satipo as they enter ruins in search of a gold relic. Obviously, the level played out a bit longer than the movie sequence, courtesy of a much richer, more involved route to the relic. New gameplay elements, such as ladders, swing points for Indy's trusty whip, and new collectibles were all on display in the level. They also featured a colorful look with a few placeholder elements here and there. In keeping with the whole explorer vibe of the movies, the level featured a number of different puzzles; some you could solve solo and others that required cooperating with your artificial intelligence controlled buddy.

As with the other Lego games, the action was given a goofy and humorous spin courtesy of some fanciful art direction. This also included silly, humorous cinematics that move the narrative along. Once you successfully guide Indy through a deadly gauntlet of the iconic moments from the film--including natives and a giant Lego boulder--you get to head out on Indy's plane. This latter part of the level showed off some of the flexibility that's been added to the various playable characters. While each character will have his or her own unique special ability, as we've seen in previous Lego games, it's also possible for Indy to temporarily get some additional abilities by picking up an object. In this case it was a wrench, which allowed him to repair his plane.

Once we wrapped up the adventure, we had a quick stroll around Barnett College, checking out the different themed rooms. These rooms offered access to different pieces of content, such as collectibles, cutscenes, and a shop where you can use your collected studs to purchase extras, including playable characters. The area was fairly spacious, with a good amount of nooks and crannies to explore, though the graphics weren't final yet.

Following our quick tour, we went to a map room and selected the next level by moving a magnifying glass. The level finds Indy checking in with old flame Marion Ravenwood at her bar in the Himalayas. As in the film, the reunion takes a turn for the worse as the evil Belloq shows up to cause problems, along with a plethora of henchmen (no, not Nazis--the game is steering clear of that topic). Clashing with Belloq's cronies offered a good showcase for the new swapping feature, which doesn't require you to be in as close proximity as in previous Lego games, and the slightly different bent that combat has in this game.

Playing Lego Indy is a much more melee-centric experience that incorporates objects to pick up and throw. The level also highlighted temporary item-based abilities again, with Indy gaining the dig ability from picking up a shovel, which you need to deal with a puzzle when you're outside the bar. The last bit of the level we played had us facing off against Belloq in a boss battle that required us to make use of the environment to dole out some damage to the fiend. In playing Marion, we also noticed she's able to jump higher, apparently a special trait of the playable ladies in the game, and she throws a mean right cross to boot.

Overall the visuals and general presentation in the game are looking good. There were obviously some rough edges due to unfinished elements and the occasionally awkward camera. But overall, the game is looking sharp and comes packing a good amount of personality. The characters have expressive faces, uttering the odd grunt here and there for effect. The cinematics are the expected mix of faithful reproduction of key moments mixed with original tomfoolery worthy of a chuckle or two. The game unabashedly wears its goofy heart on its sleeve like all the other Lego games, and it works well.

Based on what we played, Lego Indy is looking like it's going to be a whole lot of good-natured fun. The game tweaks the already solid Lego Star Wars mechanics to better fit the Earth-based adventuring. The results so far are promising and feel like a good fit. Traveller's Tales is clearly getting more comfortable with the Lego formula it established and is starting to have more fun with it. We're anxious to see how the game shapes up and how much it can be polished. If you're fan of the previous Lego games, you will definitely want to keep an eye out for Lego Indy when it ships this June for a veritable bevy of platforms: the Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, DS, PC, and PSP. Look for more on the game in the coming weeks.

Dungeon Hero
Genre: Action Rople-Playing
Publisher: Gamecock Media Group
Developer: FireFly Studios
Platforms: PC Xbox 360
Release Date: Q1 2009
Official Site: http://www.heroherohero.com/
Universe: ---

When you see a goblin, your first thought typically isn't, "Oh, how can I help that slimy little creature?" but instead it's, "How fast can I kill it?" While it certainly is possible to lay waste to the goblins in Dungeon Hero, as the name indicates your main task is saving them. We were given a very early peek by developer FirstFly Studios at what to expect from Dungeon Hero and came away with memories of Enclave dancing in our heads.

As with several goblin based games before it, Dungeon Hero is about hacking and slashing your way through enemy goblins, known as the Red Eye faction. When you're not introducing your blade or your shield to the face of your enemy you'll actually be perusing the goblin lifestyle. That's actually where most of our demo took place. Our hapless hero wandered around a goblin community that featured plenty of ambient action to watch and listen to. Goblins tortured one another, drank with their friends, shot darts and did pretty much what humans did to one another back in medieval times.

The build that we saw was understandably early -- the game doesn't ship until March 2009 -- but the combat already showed some promise. When a group of six enemy goblins approached our unwilling hero he performed a series of spins and lunges that did a good job of repelling one goblin at a time while still keeping the main character in the center of the action. There was a solid amount of chaos going on around us as the friendly faction -- there are four in all with Gold Star (friendly) and Red Eye being the only two shown to us -- bombarded an enemy stronghold with cannon shots.

As with most hack and slash titles, Dungeon Hero has a certain level of expandability built in so that the hero that begins the game won't be the one that emerges when things are said and done. There are between 250 and 300 skills that you can built up by earning experience points, and there's a massive skill tree that should provide different players with separate combat styles by the end of the game.

So why exactly are you helping one of the fantasy world's most disgusting creatures? Well, not many specifics are known at the moment, but what we were able to squeeze out of FireFly was that your hero is a bit of a nut job. In fact, they were willing to call him a full-blown psychopath who has been tricked by the friendly goblins into helping them repel Death (yes, grim reaper and all) which was awakened by the rival sect of goblins as they were mining for treasure.

Dungeon Hero is showing promise for being at such an early stage in development. With a March 2009 release FireFly should have plenty of time to flesh out the goblin world that already possessed plenty of personality during our demo. The combat seemed to feature a solid feeling of weight and complexity while not being too tough to wrap your head around. It seems as though the success of Dungeon Hero will be contingent on the ability of the game to suck players into its world and invest in its story. If that can happen then PC and Xbox 360 gamers could have their next great hack and slash adventure on their hands.

#1188 Speedy, "... o intrebare: dialoguri sint? ..." - imi pare ca nu. Jocul va destul de liniar, chiar daca nu vei juca numai in regiuni ostile unde trebuie sa omori monstri. In schimb este un sistem dezvoltat de skilluri si stiluri de lupta.

Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall
Genre: Fantasy Online Role-Playing
Publisher: Cartoon Network
Developer: Grigon Entertainment
Platforms: PC Exclusive
Release Date: TBA 2008
Official Site: http://www.fusionfall.com/
Universe: ---

Cartoon Network's new MMO Fusion Fall was finally revealed at this year's GDC and, even though it's designed for players who are quite a bit younger than us, we were still anxious to see how the network was translating its properties into an online game. When they first decided they wanted to create a new MMO that made use of the Cartoon Network characters, they decided to partner with Korean developer Grigon, who seemed to have the right sense of humor and clean visual aesthetic that was required to make this project work.

It's important to realize that though the game leverages the Cartoon Network shows, it's all been reimagined through a slightly edgier anime style with a heavy emphasis on platform style gameplay. It's basically a synthesis of several Cartoon Network shows into a single, slightly futuristic world where the influence of adults and grown-ups is pretty much non-existent. Players will be able to outfit their characters according to a wide variety of types, from sci-fi techno armor to fantasy outfits to crazy bubblegum weapons. The environments will be equally diverse, ranging from steel skyscrapers to mystical forests to threatening darklands. There are also show specific locations like the Cul-de-Sac, the Tree House, and Foster's.

The team has redesigned the characters to have a little more of a mature feel. Dexter, for instance, doesn't look like a trashcan-shaped six year old. Now he's a little older and a little more realistically proportioned. He's also now in charge of his own corporate empire, which is rivaled by a similar organization from his nemesis Mandark. More than 50 Cartoon Network characters will be featured in the game, including Samurai Jack, the Powerpuff Girls and your favorites from Ben 10, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Ed, Ed, and Eddy.

The big villain in the game is the gooey green Planet Fusion, a giant entity that travels the galaxy eating planets. In preparation for eating a planet, Planet Fusion will spit out a large group of goo guys who start breaking down the planet at a very basic level. These goo guys also tend to take on the aspect of the environment they're around, so you'll see a wide variety of types that are suitable for the location they're found in. We particularly like the street version, which is made out of concrete and rebar. Some of these monsters might even encounter the named characters from the series and mutate into evil versions of Ed, Ed and Eddy or Dexter. These are basically the bosses of the game that you'll encounter at the end of the larger missions.

Planet Fusion also sends out Terrafusers that land in the world and begin fracturing it in ways that allow for plenty of great platforming action. Imagine trying to explore a real world environment where gravity has started to break down and parts of the world have separated and are floating in the air. Those levels will also include all manner of movement options with trampolines, cannons, zip lines and such.

The team revealed the outlines of a basic quest for us. Players may be tasked with finding Samurai Jack's missing sandal, for instance, and will eventually come across it through a sequence of jumping and fighting sequences. Once they discover however, they find that it's owned by one of Planet Fusion's small gooey guys. This particular guy has taken on the form of a green, evil version of Samurai Jack and players will have to defeat him in order to retrieve the sandal and return it to Jack.

Not surprisingly, Fusion Fall also includes a very powerful collecting element. Once you turn in the sandal, you'll gain access to a small Samurai Jack nano, a tiny little helper that follows you around and offers you access to powers appropriate to the character they emulate. Since each of the 50 or so Cartoon Network characters have their own nano versions, players will have lots of stuff to collect. You'll only be able to take three nanos with you on any given adventure, so you'll have some neat choices to make about the abilities that you load up with before heading out into the world.

The game is due out in the summer of this year. Right now there are no plans to include any sort of direct competitive play between players, but that's something that's definitely being considered for an expansion. The team isn't committed to a single revenue model yet but given the 8-14 year old target demographic, we're sure there will be a substantial free element to the game, supplemented perhaps by micro transactions.

Like any publisher that has been around for so many years, Capcom has been known to dip into its catalog of classic games with Xbox Live Arcade rereleases. But while timeless favorites, such as Street Fighter II, get most of the attention, Capcom is also working on some fresh material to bring to the digital distribution market. One of its new games we just had the chance to play was Plunder, a pirate-themed strategy game scheduled for release this summer.

Plunder can be described as a casual real-time strategy game with streamlined gameplay that places less emphasis on micromanaging and more on teamwork. In the game, you navigate the ocean on a hex-based grid in search of seaside towns to raid, enemy ships to destroy, and resources to collect. The towns on the map begin as neutral territories that can be taken over by your team. Once your team controls the majority of a map's towns, you win. A high level of teamwork is required because the villagers fight back, leaving you exposed to rival pirates you might encounter at any moment. If you were to raid each town with a teammate, the damage is halved because the villagers must then spread their fire across multiple ships.

Like most strategy games, there are resources to consider. Here, those resources are gold, wood, and rum (this being a pirate game and all). By collecting these items, you can upgrade your ship in one of three ways: increase the cannon damage, raise your nautical speed, or bolster your ship's armor. There's a definite rock-paper-scissors element to the upgrade system.

The big twist here is that these seas are awash with rival pirate factions. You can play on a single system with four players, but going online allows for up to eight at a time. You can then divide these players (and optional artificial intelligence ships) into teams of two or more. You'll need to adjust your strategy depending on the size of the map and number of players. In a small map, you'll frequently run into other players and engage in a cannon fight. In these cases, you'll need to focus on your health while making sure your team sticks together. On bigger maps, speed is more essential, and players can split up to cover more terrain.

Although there's a good amount of strategy and teamwork required, the game doesn't require much of you in terms of controls or mechanics. A lot of your actions are totally automated. When you sail up to a town or enemy ship, you'll automatically attack simply by occupying adjacent spaces on the hex-based grid. Once you've taken over a town, you simply stay in port until your health is refilled. The only time you're really pressing buttons is to signal where you want your ship to go and which upgrades to activate. The vast majority of the time, you're simply navigating a map, scouting locations, and talking strategy with a teammate.

In an effort to add replay value, the developers have decided to include a map editor to the game. We're told it's the same one used by the developer, Certain Affinity. Once you've created a map, you can share it online with friends.

Plunder is scheduled for release this summer on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and the PC. While no firm release date has been set, we do know the price will be $9.99 (or 800 Microsoft Points on XBLA).
