Vidic steeled for stressful finale

Nemanja Vidic has admitted that chasing glory on three fronts places a mental strain on the players as well as the obvious physical aspects.

United are simply expected to win every match they play and, although this is typically the time of the season when the Reds hit top gear, the pressure on the team to perform is obvious.

Vida concedes that it's a stressful business playing must-win games twice a week for much of the rest of the campaign but the captain is clearly relishing the prospect of lifting some silverware at the end of the season. And United's big-match experience could prove crucial on Saturday against a team that City boss Roberto Mancini concedes is under the greater pressure to reach the final.

"For the players who play so many games – you may play 50 games a season – it can be tough, physically," Vidic revealed to ManUtd.com. "Mentally, too. We go into every game with the mentality that winning is everything – you place a lot of pressure on yourself and you have to be strong to keep that up until the end of the season.

"Every weekend you're under incredible pressure. You have to win every week, you have to perform well, you have to score goals... it's stressful.

"Obviously you need to be physically ready at this stage of the season but in order to play for a big club, the mental side is just as important. To win trophies, to win games week in, week out, you have to be very strong."A player's mental strength can have a big impact at the end of the season and that's where we hope our experience comes into play."

Some fans may agree that cup clashes can be a little less stressful than the league title run-in as draws are never a disaster but, of course, replays have been scrapped at the semi-final stage ever since Ryan Giggs' 1999 heroics. It means the victors will be decided at Wembley and Vidic now appreciates what the competition means to everybody in England.

"To be honest, not a lot," he replied when asked what he knew about the FA Cup when he was young. "I knew it existed and I probably watched a few finals as a kid but it was only when I came to England in 2006 that I realised exactly how important it was. It's a big, big competition with a lot of history and I want to be a part of that."
