Summer transfer targets

Manchester United set for summer swoop
A slice of United's Manchester connection could be sacrificed in the summer to rebuild the Reds' midfield. Mancunians Danny Welbeck and Wes Brown could both be on the way out of Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson closes in on his summer wanted list. With Paul Scholes yet to announce whether he will carry on next season and serious doubts over the futures of Owen Hargreaves, Darron Gibson, Anderson and even Ji-sung Park - whose contract ends in 2012 – Fergie will focus on boosting his midfield once the season ends. Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder is the No.1 target, although the Italian club's president Massimo Moratti has said he will fight to keep the 26-year-old Dutchman. “The interest from Manchester United in Sneijder is real,” said Moratti... Fergie is also looking to replenish his stock of young stars in the centre of the park with Everton's Jack Rodwell and Sunderland's Jordan Henderson on his shopping list.
Manchester Evening News

Elsewhere, Brian Woolnough, writing in the Daily Star, names Reds centre-back Nemanja Vidic as his player of the year this season. "Vidic is not a man of many words yet he is the classic leader, someone who has stood tall throughout United's season. He has been outstanding and one of the reasons United are closing in on another Treble."

The Mail confirm Wayne Rooney (and a host of other England stars) has been released by England in order to focus on his club committments this week. England will play Ghana on Tuesday night without the likes of Rooney, Frank Lampard and John Terry.

Manchester United must say no way Jose to Mourinho

So, Jose Mourinho has publicly revealed that he is willing to have another stab at management in the Premier League. How frightfully decent of him.

The Portuguese Peacock is the red-hot favourite with the bookies to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford when the Glasgow Growler draws the curtains on his extraordinary career in two or three years’ time.

Pals of mine who are misguided enough to support the Stretford Strollers are all agog at the prospect of the ‘Special One’ becoming the next incumbent at their Theatre of Dreams.

Well, I’ve got some advice for those Red-loving mates and for every other United fan. Don’t wish too hard for Mourinho as your next manager – you just might end up with him.

Because if you members of the Old Trafford congregation believe that, in Mourinho, you’ll have another Alex Ferguson you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Both are great, successful managers. But there the comparisons end. Their management styles couldn’t be more contrasting. One is a marathon runner, the other a sprinter.

Even after all these years I can still recall one of Fergie’s press conferences early into his career at Old Trafford.

He and his side were going through a rough patch at the time. The United fans were disgruntled. The knives were being sharpened. The word on the street was that Fergie’s days as manager of the Reds were numbered.

In that particular press conference Alex was asked if he felt his job was under threat. “No I don’t,” he barked. “I’ve come here not to rebuild a team but to rebuild a club.”

And that’s exactly what he did. He took a club which was on its knees and built it from the bottom upwards to make it the monster it is today.

Throughout his long career at Old Trafford there has been one constant theme running through Fergie’s management. From day one to this day he’s been a great believer in the merits of youth.

You don’t need me to remind you about the kids who came through the Old Trafford ranks in the early 1990s to become the backbone of a side which dominated the Premier League for a full decade.

That conveyor belt of talent, it’s true, is not as productive today as it was then. So Fergie has been forced to change his tactics - but not his beliefs.

Now he has to invest his club’s money to bring in the youngsters who he believes represent the future.

We’ve witnessed those tactics for ourselves over the past 12 months with Ferguson’s acquisition of striker Javier Hernandez and central defender Chris Smalling.

Both those youngsters were relatively unknown when they arrived at Old Trafford. Barring serious injury both will surely be major stars of the Premier League for many years to come.

Had Mourinho rather than Ferguson been United manager these past 12 months I would wager my mortgage that neither Hernandez nor Smalling would today be on the Old Trafford payroll.

Because that’s not how the ‘Special One’ works. He doesn’t plan for the future as Fergie does. He buys only the finished product.

He’s not interested in building a club, his only interest is in building a team. He wants success – and he wants it now.

For Mourinho, Chelsea was the ideal club to manage. A billionaire Russian owner who was prepared to lavish untold millions on his new toy. Jose was never going to turn his back on a chance like that.

And with Roman Abramovich’s millions he achieved what he set out to do. He turned Chelsea into the champions of England and, with a bit of luck, he could have turned his club into the champions of Europe.

But consider this. In his years as Chelsea’s manager how many promising young players came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge to become first-team regulars? The answer is none. So this then, it seems, is the manager the United fans want to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson when the great man eventually rides off into the sunset.

Mourinho, the quick-fix expert who always plans for today but never plans for tomorrow. Is he REALLY the perfect replacement for Fergie? Not in my eyes he isn’t.

Don’t get me wrong. Mourinho knows how to win a game of football. And if his team can’t win he’ll make damn well sure that they don’t lose. There isn’t a shadow of doubt in my mind that if Mourinho does pick up the baton from Ferguson two or three years down the line he will win major trophies for the Reds, providing he gets the financial backing he demands.

But it won’t be a prolonged success because the term ‘long haul’ is not in Jose’s vocabulary. As I mentioned earlier, he’s a sprinter not a marathon runner.

What should worry United’s fans is not what Mourinho might win as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor but what he would leave behind when he moves on. Because he will move on, you know.

And my guess would be a squad of costly ageing players with not one promising youngster in sight.

Perhaps the Old Trafford faithful would settle for that. A couple of Premier League titles and the Champions League trophy. Who wouldn’t happily accept that?

I know one person who wouldn’t because he’s never believed in caviar today and stale bread tomorrow. He’s the man who has built one of the world’s great clubs from scratch by always planning for the future. And you don’t need me to name him.

p.s:un articol superb,ce refelecta realitatea ,fuck off Mourihno,Forever Sir Alex Ferguson!!!!
