NINTENDO

Wii gets Fit

Mario as a personal trainer? Believe it. Although doctors are already diagnosing overeager game players with "Wii-itis," Nintendo is still touting its "new-gen" console as the only gaming machine that helps you work out. Months after it struck a deal to have Wiis put in YMCAs nationwide, the company announced Wii Fit, the most fitness-oriented Wii game yet. Using a new balance board peripheral, the game will measure a player's body mass index and offer them a workout regimen featuring calisthenics, aerobics, yoga, and more. No word yet if Metroid's svelte heroine Samus will eventually teach Pilates classes.

Mario Kart Wii revealed, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Mario Galaxy Dated

"The Mario Factory" is one of the more common nicknames for Nintendo, and it's well deserved. Some 26 years after his first appearance in Donkey Kong, the mustachioed plumber is as popular as ever, and was at the center of Nintendo's highest-profile North American event. The company whipped fans into a frenzy by dating two Wii games starring The Overalled One--Super Mario Galaxy for November 12 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl for December 3. It also used the event to reveal an all-new but not-unexpected game, Mario Kart Wii, which will ship next spring with a steering-wheel shell for the Wii Remote.

Sony

$499 PS3 pricing

Sony kicked off E3 week with a midnight announcement that it was slashing $100 off the 60GB PlayStation 3. The new $499 price point brought the Blu-ray disc-equipped console in line with the $480 Xbox 360 Elite, which has no HD-DVD playback. Sony fans and analysts dubbed the move shrewd, and sales of the console rose exponentially at online retailers. But then, on Thursday night, SCEE president David Reeves announced that the price drop had only come because Sony had decided to discontinue the 60GB PS3 in the US. In the next 12 hours, his statements were called inaccurate by US representatives until Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Kaz Hirai told--of all places--a Norwegian television station that the production of the 60GB PS3 had ceased. However, Sony claims there is enough back stock for the last Emotion Engine-equipped PS3 to be available in the US "for months."

New-and-improved PS3 and PSP

At the same time the 60GB PS3 "discount" was unveiled, Sony announced that a new $599 80GB model of the console--previously available only in Korea--would make its way to the US. Besides the extra 20GB of memory, the console will come bundled with the popular racing game MotorStorm--but the console will use software emulation, not the hardware that its 60GB and 20GB forbears employed.

As the debate over the value of the 80GB PS3 raged, Sony announced a new version of its PlayStation Portable during its Tuesday morning press conference. The new version neutralizes one of the bigger criticisms of its predecessor by offering a video-out option, meaning purchasers of UMD media can now watch said media on full-sized televisions. Sony also announced two new PSP colors: Ice Silver, bundled with a Family Guy UMD, and Ceramic White, which will have a Darth Vader logo on the back and come with Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron.

Killzone 2, Unreal Tournament III

Two years ago, the first trailer for Killzone 2 was shown at E3 2005, and with controversial results: while some cheered its stunning graphics, others smelled a pre-rendered rat and cried foul. But this year, Sony showed off the Guerilla Games-developed shooter as a new trailer and in two real-time demos. The results looked impressive, meaning that when Killzone 2 finally comes out, it will help give the console's library a much-needed shot in the arm in terms of games that are exclusive to the platform.

As far as this year is concerned, Sony announced that the PS3 would be the only console the much-awaited Unreal Tournament 3 would be released for this year. The announcement came around six months after UT3 was announced for the Xbox 360, so its limited exclusivity was a welcome development for Sony loyalists. The PS3 UT3, which Mark Rein says is "looking better" than Gears of War did at the same stage of development, will also let players import PC mods, and will include a level editor--a first for the PS3.

Microsoft

No Xbox 360 price cut

Sony-bashers are calling the $499 pricing of the now-discontinued PS3 a simple case of bait and switch. However, some industry-watchers suspect it was merely a devious dose of corporate jujitsu to lure Microsoft to knock down its console's price by as much as $100 per SKU. However, by the time the lights came up at Microsoft's event Tuesday night, it was clear that the software giant didn't feel that the time was right to slash the 360's price. So, in this case, no news made news.

Gears of War PC-bound, Mass Effect and PGR4 dated

With no new hardware to unveil other than the Scene It! Controller, the thrust of Microsoft's press briefing was "games, games, and more games." It took the opportunity to finally date BioWare's highly anticipated sci-fi role-playing game Mass Effect (due in November), and to announce that Project Gotham Racing 4 would hit the streets in September--earlier than expected. And although trailer leaks revealed the Vista version of Gears of War ahead of Microsoft's conference, the fact that Epic Games' best-selling shooter is no longer 360-exclusive is good news for PC gamers everywhere.

Warren Spector headed to Disneyland

Two and a half years after he left Eidos-owned Ion Storm, game designer Warren Spector is once again in the employ of a major publisher. In the middle of E3's semi-chaotic goings-on, Disney Interactive Studios announced it had bought out Junction Point Studios, the shop Spector set up in 2005. Though terms of the deal were not disclosed, the agreement confirmed that, in addition to the games Spector is already working on, Junction Point would help bring Disney franchises to next-gen platforms. Deus Duck, anyone?

Metallica, album downloads to rock Rock Band

The battle of the rhythm games officially kicked off during this year's event, and Harmonix came out wielding lightning bolts. The company announced that its upcoming Rock Band would not just feature hit singles, but also entire full-length, original albums from multiple labels. The first band to receive the digital conversion will be classic British rockers The Who and its widely acclaimed 1971 album Who's Next. Amping its announcement up to 11, Harmonix also revealed that the Grammy-winning "Enter Sandman" from Metallica's 1991 "Black" album will be included in Rock Band's initial lineup, and that a "substantial number" of songs from Metallica's catalog are slated to appear in the game.

E3 Itself

All other news aside, the one subject on every E3 attendee's mind was the event itself. Over a year after it had reached its crowded, deafening, Technicolor apotheosis at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the event was reborn as a smaller, more industry-focused gathering scattered across Santa Monica. The results drew a mixed reaction. Many attendees enjoyed not having to jostle for position in a crowd of 60,000, in particular members of the press with games to cover.

However, covering the event required darting between various locations, including the backed-up publisher presentation suite at the Fairmont Miramar, and Sony's press briefing in Culver City. Though ostensibly the center of the event, the E3 show floor at Barker Hangar was a half-hour drive away from the cluster of hotel suites where publishers showed the top titles. Given the less-than-impressive game offerings at the sweltering venue, many E3 attendees didn't even bother going, raising the prospect of no show floor at E3 2008. Assuming there is an E3 2008.

NEXT: Best Stage Demos

Best Stage Demos

Impressive video game trailers didn't really seem to be the focus of this year's E3--at least, not as much as seeing actual games in motion. We were pleased to once again broadcast the GameSpot Live E3 stage show directly from the event, and this award goes to the game that had the best stage demo. But this year, the category got locked up by a demonstration that was so impressive, it almost isn't fair. After all, Rock Band is a four-player music game that not only lets you rock out on guitar like Harmonix's Guitar Hero, but it also lets three friends join in with a bass guitar, drums, and vocals for multiplayer sessions to create your very own band, right in the living room. And it's also a game that was made for entertaining public displays.

And to be fair (or is that unfair?), Rock Band did have a larger stage-show slot than the other games. But honestly, after closing out E3 with 40 minutes of rock and roll, including Harmonix staffers jamming out tunes from David Bowie, Black Sabbath, and The Hives, we wouldn't have had it any other way. And from what we could tell, Harmonix's Matt Boch wouldn't have either. That guy seemed to really like our studio couch. Sadly, our studio couch will now be a bit emptier, since this was GameSpot Live's feature producer Rich Gallup's last E3 show with GameSpot. But at least we'll still have the couch.

Is Rock Band necessarily going to be an amazing, fully featured success that works flawlessly online with four players? That remains to be seen. But as far as we're concerned, what we saw of the game in Santa Monica ended up being the best stage show demo we've had in a while.

Most Dissapointing Absence

Faced with the hot summer sun, the great number of impressive video games on display, and that wonderful Southern California traffic gridlock, E3 attendees had more than enough on their minds. Still, there were several games that were curiously absent from E3, and the one we probably missed the most was the insanely ambitious Spore from designer Will Wright, creator of SimCity and The Sims.
Spore
We'll have to tide ourselves over with this video from last year's E3.
Watch It

Spore's development seemed to be chugging along and appeared to be further and further down the road each time we saw the game, though admittedly, we last only saw the game at the E3 event back in May. The recent news that Civilization IV designer Soren Johnson had left Firaxis to join the Spore team was certainly an interesting development, and maybe it was a bit telling. Johnson's work on Civ IV helped make that game one of the deepest and most enjoyable games in the series, and considering that Spore will have a late-game component that strongly resembles Civilization's gameplay, it makes sense that the Maxis team would want to draft the talented designer.

But we're still not happy that we couldn't get some time with the game. After all, Spore will let players create a sentient race of critters--from microscopic amoebas evolving up through the food chain--in order to build a world-spanning civilization and eventually an intergalactic empire. It's a shame it wasn't on hand at the show.

Best Graphics

This was a tough award to decide because E3 was jam-packed with games that were dazzling to a degree not seen before. We saw the awesome technological prowess of Crysis, and the innovative and unique look of LittleBigPlanet, to name just a few. However, we have to give this award to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a game that floored us and many others with its lucid vision of modern-day combat.

Call of Duty games are always visually complex, but with Modern Warfare, developer Infinity Ward seems to pack almost every square inch of the screen with explosions, bullet tracers, and sheer atmosphere. Everything looks amazing, but perhaps the coolest moment in the demo occurs when your character lowers his night-vision goggles and the dimly lit battlefield comes to life in an eerie green. Even more impressive is the effortless fluidity of the action. Not only does this game raise the graphical bar, it does so within the limitations of current video game technology, and from what we saw, totally avoided any frame rate issues. Call of Duty 4's programmers and artists seem to have found the ultimate sweet spot and are using it to create the smoothest, most cinematic view of infantry combat that we've seen to date.

Best Action Adventure

Arguably the greatest strength of the original Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction was its consistent ability to deliver big, satisfying explosions at a staggering volume, and it's this exact same quality that left us so impressed with what Pandemic and EA were showing of Mercenaries 2: World in Flames at E3 2007. The shift from the Xbox and PlayStation 2 hardware to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is already paying notable dividends, as the game's massive, uninterrupted version of a virtual Venezuela teems with detail.

What really got us excited about what we saw of Mercenaries 2 was how just about everything--save for the ground itself--could be blown up. We watched gorgeous explosions as massive bridges, off-shore oil rigs, semi-truck trailers brimming with fuel, and parcels of rainforest went up in smoke--it was the kind of stuff Jerry Bruckheimer would spend millions trying to create.

Perhaps our favorite Mercenaries 2 moment from E3 2007 was when a fuel bomb air strike was called in on an enemy base that sat on a small hill. A split-second after we realized that the fuel payload had vaporized just a few yards above the ground, it ignited, creating an incredible shockwave that incinerated everything around. Add to all this abject pandemonium a story of personal revenge set during an oil crisis in strife-ridden Venezuela, and you're looking at a game with plenty of explosive potential. You're also looking at the best action adventure game at E3 07.

Anyone could have taken the typical massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) template, stuck pirates in it, and called it a day. But developer Flying Lab Software looks like it will combine playability with depth in Pirates of the Burning Sea, and the result is a fascinating take on 18th-century Caribbean exploits.

But let's break it down. First, you have all the flamboyant swashbuckling you'd expect in a game with pirates, and as such you can use a variety of sword techniques to bring your enemies to their knees. Then you have ship-to-ship combat, which takes a tactical approach and forces you to consider factors like ship speed, wind direction, and cannon facing. But what fascinates us most is the complex player-versus-player game, in which you earn your nation "unrest points" by doing underhanded things like delivering supplies to local rebels. Making enough waves results in a huge nation vs. nation battle in which only the fittest survive.

Consider that the game will also have an intricate supply-chain economy reminiscent of EVE Online, and you have a potential winner when this game sets sail for retail this year. It's already the most impressive MMORPG at E3.

Best Platformer

More than 20 years after Super Mario Bros. took young gaming minds by storm, you'd think there'd be nothing new under the platforming sun. Wrong, says UK-based Media Molecule, whose PS3 game LittleBigPlanet has had us positively giddy with excitement since its quietly stunning debut at the Game Developers Conference in March. This is one of those games where every little mechanic and every new button press brings a smile to your face. We were wonderfully entertained by features as simple as the grabbing mechanic, which we used to latch onto a spinning pinwheel and launch ourselves up in the air. We also loved using the analog sticks and tilt control to flail our little sack dude's arms and head around in an expression of pure joy.

But as brilliant as this game's included content is probably going to be, we're even more excited about the included editing tools. No, scratch that--they're simply creative tools, because from the looks of it, you won't just be editing existing content; you'll be building entire clockwork worlds from the ground up. The raft of customization and building tools and options being put into LittleBigPlanet is quite unlike anything we've seen in a game of this type before, and based on the few brilliant sample levels that the developers had on hand--all of which were created in just a couple of hours--the burgeoning community for this game should hopefully turn out downloadable masterpieces that we can't even begin to envision.

Best Racing Game

With its interesting new take on open-world racing, Burnout Paradise is already looking super-impressive. Just imagine the fast-paced, over-the-top racing you know from the past games unleashed on an open-ended world. That should give you a good idea of what to expect from Burnout Paradise.

Of course, the game's structure is changing a little to better take advantage of that open world, and in addition to crash junctions and full races, the developers at Criterion are inserting plenty of little things to do and see throughout the city. You'll find ramps to jump off, debris to bash through, and even a fun little idea called power parking, which requires you to use the game's new emergency brake to slide into a parking space, right between two other cars. So the gameplay appears to be evolving nicely, but the real showpiece for Burnout at E3 this year was on the technical side.

Burnout Paradise implements the PlayStation Eye camera for a new online feature called "mugshots." Whenever you take someone out online, their camera quickly activates to take a snapshot of the player, which is then sent to you. You'll be able to store the pictures you receive to give you a gallery of the foes you've wronged. It's a neat little feature that's probably one of the smartest uses of a camera in a non-camera game we've seen. The online itself is also very smooth. When you invite players into the game, they'll join up completely seamlessly, which in some ways makes the open city the lobby. But if you don't feel like launching directly into an event, the game keeps track of a ton of statistics, so you'll see when other players are taking each other out, scoring long drifts, and so on.

Wrap up all of that new stuff in a sharp-looking graphics engine that appears to take the destructive beauty of car crashes to the next level, while also giving you a smooth frame rate and an amazing sense of speed, and you've got the most impressive driving game of E3 07, Burnout Paradise on the PlayStation 3.

Best Rythm Game

There were high expectations surrounding Rock Band going into this year's show, and the game did not disappoint. Every day you would hear people ask "Dude, have you played Rock Band yet?", and if the response was "No," you'd hear the lucky person who had played the game say how great it was.

For starters, Rock Band is a dream come true for anyone who has ever been hopelessly addicted to Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero, or Drum Mania because it's essentially all those games wrapped into one. What's more, EA and Harmonix aren't content to just throw three different play styles into the game and call it a day. They seem bent on making Rock Band the game that music fans have all dreamed of. Though only 16 songs have been revealed, the setlist already features the likes of The Who, Weezer, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, David Bowie, Rush, and an obscure little band you might have heard of called Metallica. When you finally master the songs that ship with the game, Harmonix will do its best to keep you busy with downloadable content every week. How does playing an entire album from The Who strike you?

Speaking of online, you'll be able to jam with your friends from all over the world--an exciting prospect for those people who can barely clap their hands in time, much less play drums. Even Rock Band's controllers are cool. You'll be able to tap the microphone like a tambourine or a cowbell when you aren't singing; the Stratocaster guitars look great and even give you the ability to change the sound of your instrument; and the drums are high quality and feel good. Even though EA isn't talking price just yet, it's probably safe to say that all this fun won't come cheap. But if what we saw at E3 is any indication, Rock Band will rock.

Best Role-Playing game

Interplay's Fallout and Fallout 2 are two of the most beloved role-playing games ever made for the PC. So when Bethesda Softworks, creator of The Elder Scrolls games, announced it was working on Fallout 3 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, there was a lot of skepticism. Let's just say this wasn't going to be an easy act to follow. But Bethesda appears to be on the right track. The studio definitely knows a thing or two about role-playing games, and as it proved at E3, it also knows what makes Fallout tick.

What we saw suggests a game that will blend the best elements of the Fallout franchise with Bethesda's role-playing game expertise. But instead of sword-and-sorcery fantasy, Fallout 3 will immerse you in a postapocalyptic world inhabited by mutants, scavengers, and survivors. You'll meet memorable characters, make momentous decisions, and engage in firefights won not with reflexes, but with tactics. The attention to detail is extraordinary--Bethesda seems to be paying homage to the original source material while adapting it to modern graphical standards. The result was strikingly original, yet familiar. If what we saw at E3 is any indication, Bethesda is on its way to capturing the ironic tone and unforgettable gameplay of Fallout. Best Shooter

Make no mistake: figuring out which shooter made the best showing at E3 2007 wasn't easy. This year's event was packed with remarkably good shooters that mean very, very good times ahead for shooter fans this year. You could make a strong case for any of this year's finalists to take the award, but the game GameSpot's editors all finally (if grudgingly, in some cases) agreed on was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We already knew the game looked great, and that it's coming from Infinity Ward, the developer that created the original series--but the press conference stage demonstration really got our attention, and we were equally impressed when we got a chance to see the game up close.

Unlike other games in the Call of Duty series, this one doesn't take place in World War II. Instead, the setting involves a modern-day conflict, and judging from what was shown at E3, it'll be every bit as action-packed as all the previous games put together. The new game covers a fictitious conflict that occurs on two fronts, in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East. You'll be operating with the most high-tech weaponry available, slugging it out against armies of tanks, choppers, and even smarter, tougher enemy soldiers who seem to intelligently use cover and will hunt you relentlessly in some of the game's tighter spaces. And if E3 is any indication, Call of Duty 4 will present everything with the same kind of well-researched accuracy that, like other games in the series, will make you feel like you're truly in the middle of a harrowing battle.

None of this is to take away from any of the finalists, all of which made great showings at E3, as well as some of the other very impressive games that were edged out of the list by a hair's breadth, such as Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Half-Life 2: The Orange Box. It was a very, very close race, but Call of Duty 4 edged past the competition and came out on top as GameSpot's best shooter of E3 2007.

Best Sports Game

Ever since its debut on the Xbox 360, the long-running Madden NFL series from EA Sports has been struggling to get back up to speed with its last-gen counterparts. Madden NFL 07 brought both franchise and superstar modes back into the mix, and with the upcoming Madden NFL 08, both of those features have been boosted with some new twists. But it's in the fundamentals that Madden 08 seems to shine brightest. In many ways, Madden 08 could mark the year that the next-gen version doesn't just catch up to the established games, but surpasses them.

From the outset, the game feels far quicker and more responsive than last year's version. This is thanks in large part to a branching animation system that gives you more control over your player than ever before. A player's weight shifts as he changes position on the field, runners will automatically squeeze between linemen when running up the middle, and wide receivers have a ton of new catch animations--from high-flying grabs, to grass-skimming scoops--all of which make practically every possession feel fresh.

In addition to having more control over your team, Madden 08's new "player weapon" feature will help distinguish your Vince Youngs from your Aaron Brooks with an icon-based system that will mean NFL superstars will play head-and-shoulders above the rank-and-file, and will also help Madden novices identify who their go-to guys are, even if playing the game for the first time.

Let's face it, while Madden will no doubt continue to dominate the sales charts when it's released next month, it will also draw a lot of fire. It's part of the price paid for being one of the most successful video game series in existence. However, based on what we've seen and played of Madden NFL 08 so far, the game seems poised to surprise even some of its staunchest critics. It sure surprised us at this year's E3.

Best Strategy game

World in Conflict could be described as Red Dawn meets real-time strategy. Not because you play as Patrick Swayze, because you don't, unfortunately, but because it deals with an alternate history in which Russia invades the United States. And if this game really is as good as it looked at E3, it should be every bit as popular in this decade as Red Dawn was in the '80s. It doesn't hurt that Massive Entertainment is also looking to deliver the most visually stunning real-time strategy game in years. Imagine B-52s carpet-bombing an American town to save it, tanks and attack helicopters exploding due to a barrage of missiles and rockets, and not one, not two, but three tactical nuclear missiles streaking in, exploding, and leaving behind the sight of three mushroom clouds rising into the atmosphere. The game was in especially fine form at this year's E3 because the DirectX 10 version was unveiled on our stage show.

As jaw-dropping as all these visuals are onscreen, it helps that World in Conflict is one of the more innovative real-time strategy games to come along in recent years, particularly when it comes to multiplayer action. This is a tactical game, and there's no base building or resource gathering to deal with. You just have your units and a mission, and should your units be destroyed, their cost is refunded to you so you can buy some more, at which point those reinforcements are airdropped to the battlefield. Meanwhile, the multiplayer is nonstop and frantic--you can play on a team alongside seven other teammates against eight other players. And to top it all off, built-in voice chat lets you coordinate with your team a lot more easily than typing in commands on a keyboard. World in Conflict was the best RTS at E3, and it's poised to conquer American PCs when it ships this November.

Best Nintendo DS Game

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass was basically a known quantity going into E3, given that we had the Japanese import in the office a good couple of weeks or more before the show even started. But we were already so impressed with the game--even before we were able to read it--that it would have been hard for any other DS game to top it. Indeed, E3 revealed some really impressive games on Nintendo's scrappy little handheld-that-could, but none topped the excitement that the latest Zelda engendered.

Many of us were saddened when Nintendo discarded the radical new look of The Wind Waker and went back to a realistic art style for Twilight Princess, so we were just as elated to see that whimsical style return in Phantom Hourglass. Even more exciting, though, is the game's intuitive touch screen-only control system, which sounded constraining on paper but turned out to be liberating. Now you can direct Link, control his swordplay, and use all his trademark abilities--some to an even greater level of precision--simply by pointing and slashing with the stylus. We can't wait for the game to hit stores in October.
