                            Watch and Enjoy

Gameplay has been improved for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, with key additions such as an improved Teamvision system, with tactics changing according to situation, better off-the-ball movement such as running to receive passes, etc and the AI recognizing strategies that work and it accumulates data on an ongoing basis within Master League and League modes. Another new addition is the readjustments for ball movements, and PES 2009 has new air resistance calculations for the trajectory of the ball. The heaviness of the ground also impacts the gameplay this year, which means passes will be heavier. There will also be new friction routines to affect ball movement in terms of ground conditions, backspin routines are calculated so that ball slows accordingly, and the bounce of the ball can be used more effectively: players can flick the ball up to tee a shot, or to lift it over a defender’s trailing leg. Skills are now integrated more into the game. If a player has the ability, they will be able to perform deft turns. There will also be adjusted controls to make close control more intuitive.

[edit] Graphics

Visuals are also improved in PES 2009. There will be graphic depictions of weather conditions unique to each stadium, much more detailed lighting effects that mimic the time of day more closely, and all new player models in game. Everything is reworked for additional detail. In addition to that, more stadia are added including Wembley Stadium and more. More animations are added, including Cristiano Ronaldo's open legged stance before a free kick and other animations which make the game flow more, with players now stumbling and placing a hand down so as to keep running. LED adboards are also set to make its debut on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 versions. New camera angles are also in PES 2009 and a new, clearer menu system is in, too.

he beautiful game is about to kick off in the UK tomorrow with PES 2008 on PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. If you haven't already seen our controversial PS3 review, we urge you to check it out. Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka, the game's legendary producer, has already promised lots more new features and modes in next year's game. Seabass has even gone on the record to promise a complete overhaul in every aspect. So, to get those creative juices flowing while you wait for PES 2008 to come out, we've put our heads together to come up with Pro-G's Top 10: Things that will make PES 2009 great. Read on, and let us know what you think should be in next year's game in the comments section below.

10. Get rid of the invisible barriers for throw-ins. This has been a bug-bear of mine throughout the series. When taking throw-ins, your player seems to have this magical bubble around him that prevents receiving and defending players from getting too close. This isn't how they do it in real life, and so this isn't how it should be in PES, the most realistic football simulation ever. Get rid Konami.

9. Sort the music out. PES has always had cheesy music, but PES 2008 has possibly the worst, cheesiest, cringe-worthy music ever heard in a video game. What you get is a small box in the top-right corner which details the song name and the genre, from salsa to drum and bass. Some of the tracks are so mind-numbingly bad, that we've had to turn the background music off entirely just to end the pain. Let me give you some sample lyrics from a piece of original music in the game (you have to imagine this with a Status Quo-type punk rock riff): "Football, soccer, football, soccer, football, soccer, all around the world. Football, soccer, football, soccer, football, soccer, Greatest game of all!" This isn't licensed music, this is god-awful music. Konami, please, do something.

8. Tweak the keepers. Some players criticised Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for the way keepers seemed to suffer from Paul Robinson syndrome - spilling the ball at strikers' feet whenever a shot comes in. While they've tweaked the keepers in PES 2008 so that it happens less often, it's still heart in the mouth time whenever the opposition let fly from mid to close range. Whatever happened to Dave 'Safe Hands' Seaman?

7. Don't break play up with changes in camera angles. One of the great improvements in PES 2008 is the ability to take quick free kicks and for refs to be able to dish out cards without the game cutting to a different camera angle. If you have the game set to wide view (of course you do), and you hack Cristiano Ronaldo from behind the ref will trotter over and dish out a card without the camera leaving that view. It's so great that we want it extended to non-shooting free kicks and goal kicks. There's no need for the 'behind the player' camera angle in these circumstances, so keeping the wide view while the keeper trots off to get the ball from a ball boy or a player passing the ball to another so he can take a free-kick in his own half would be fine. Not just fine, it would be fantastic.

6. Skill-based penalties. As far as we can tell, there's no skill to penalties in PES at all. If you're the keeper you guess the direction and hope for the best. If you're shooting, you press the direction and hope it doesn't hit the post or go wide. While real life penalties are somewhat of a lottery, there's obviously skill involved. We'd love to see Konami introduce a penalty system that somehow took skill to master. How about a return to the way it was in ISS 64 with the boxes?. Oh, and Konami, get rid of those dodgy new keeper camera angles please.

5. Make and share videos of your matches. Halo 3 has taken game editing to a whole new level with the ability to save videos of matches and share them with friends. How great would it be if you could do that with PES? You could win a seven-goal thriller with your mate then watch it from the perspective of a floating camera that you were in total control of. Then you could share your films with your friends through Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. You could even save your favourite goals or funny moments, edit it together so it looks really cool and then submit it for consideration on Konami's Goal of the Month competition, which everyone can check out through XBL or PSN. How great would that be? Come on Konami, we know you can do it.

4. Overhaul the online offering. PES 2008 only allows 1 vs 1 matches online, which is disappointing. We'd love to see that increased for the next game, even if it is only 2 vs 2. We'd also love the opportunity to create private leagues with your friends, a bit like The Sun's Fantasy Football. And how about PlayStation Eye and Xbox LIVE Vision support so that you can see your opponent's reaction when you score a last minute winner, and they can see you jumping around the room and screaming your head off? And what about the lag? Playing PES 2008 online is nowhere as smooth an experience as it is offline. While this situation may improve with patches and updates, and we know that completely lag free play is impossible, we'd love Konami to improve the situation for PES 2009.

3. More official licenses and more teams. It's a question of taste as to whether you like to play in real kits, in real stadiums, with players that aren't named Gills and teams that aren't named North London FC. Personally, I'm a big fan of official licenses in football games. It's one of the best features about FIFA 08 and something that I've always felt adds authenticity to the match experience. It seems like Konami has taken a sideways step with the English Premier League rather than a forward one. Official licenses for Manchester United and Arsenal have been replaced with Newcastle and Tottenham. We know it's very difficult, given EA Sports' exclusive deal, but we can only hope that the situation will improve with PES 2009. We'd also like to see more teams, both national and club. How about the German, Scottish and Portuguese leagues?

2. Improve the graphics. Now that we're well into next-gen gaming, there's no real excuse why PES' visuals aren't top notch. While player animations and faces (some) are great, playing the game in the main wide angle simply looks terrible when compared with FIFA 08. We're not asking for much, since it's gameplay that really counts, but we'd like to see the crowd receive a lick of paint, the menus re-thought, player kits more real looking and the overall presentation dragged into the next generation. We love the classic PES animation, but a few tweaks here and there wouldn't go amiss.

1. Don't overhaul the game engine. We love PES. We love it like a fine vintage wine that gets better with age while keeping the essence of what makes it taste so good. All we're really asking for is subtle changes, changes that will give that awe-inspiring gameplay a next-generation, high definition sheen. For years PES has been one of the greatest multiplayer games in the world. The feeling of satisfaction you get from scoring a goal in PES, be it a tap-in at the end of an Arsenal-esque 20-pass move or a Frank Lampard scorcher, is unlike anything in gaming. It's about as close as us mortals are going to get to that uncontrollable burst of emotion professional footballers experience week in, week out. We've been enjoying those feelings on a virtual basis for years, and we want to keep enjoying them for many years to come.

What would you like to see in PES 2009? Let us know in the comments section below.

fter a quiet period for news after the first press release way back in June, now is the time all the meaty news comes out!

PES Unites!
Konami unveils new modes and gamplay additions as PES 2009 strives to band together PES players in the quest for football perfection

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has revealed further details of the many gameplay additions in its forthcoming PES 2009 title, and has explained its unique ‘PES Unites’ slogan that has been designed to band together fans of the beautiful game via its new game modes.

Due for release on PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360, PlayStation®2, PC-DVD, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and mobile phones in Autumn 2008 (followed by a Wii version in spring 2009), PES 2009 has been reworked from the ground up. New player models, AI elements and physics routines all combine to create the most advanced and realistic football game ever, but at the heart of PES 2009 are two new modes designed to make players rethink the way they approach the game.

‘PES Unites’ is the key phrase Konami is using to sum up the ethos of the new game. PES 2009 also improves on its many existing game modes and adds a number of new ways to play the game. Central to this is the new ‘Become a Legend’ solo mode, which casts the user as a midfielder or striker within a match. Using a default vertical camera view, the player starts as a rookie pro at the start of their career, and charts the many highs and lows of becoming a professional player. An extension of the popular ‘Fix’ mode, the ‘Become a Legend’ mode sees the player operate in their favoured attacking position, and work as part of the overall team as opposed to controlling every member as in a normal game.

If successful, the player must first cement their place in the starting line-up with strong performances, before catching the eye of bigger clubs and earning a move to top flight teams. Of course, results are everything in modern day football, and players must force their way into contention or face lengthy stints as a substitute or eventually be forced to take a step down to a smaller club if performances are not good enough. The ‘Become a Legend’ mode has already proved a massive hit in Japanese versions of PES since 2007, and is certain to enjoy similar status across Europe.

PES 2009 also boasts an online variant of the ‘Become a Legend’ mode, entitled simply ‘Legends.’ Players can use their saved player in online matches with like-minded friends, and can show their skills on the larger online stage.

The PES series has always been famed for its deep yet accessible control system, but the new game is aiming even higher. PES 2009 offers an unprecedented level of control, redefining the intricacies of first touch, close control and ball distribution, while also enhancing its shooting and AI mechanisms to create an all-round footballing experience. Konami’s Tokyo-based Pro Evolution Soccer Production Team has introduced new control systems wherein the player can now perform tricks and feints without the use of special moves, but within the context of the player’s run and via rapid turns and movements of the Dpad or analogue stick.

Likewise, the way the player guides the ball has been changed. The PES series has always treated the ball as a separate entity, but new calculations related to the air resistance and friction of the ground make passing and movement in PES 2009 a great deal more realistic. Different weather conditions will now have a more pronounced effect on the weight and movement of passes, with players having to compensate for more heavy conditions in poor weather.

Producer Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka and his team have also worked to extend the remit of their Teamvision AI routines, with on-screen team mates adapting their tactics according to current situations, and moving into space to assist the player in attacking and defensive situations. Teamvision also recognizes strategies that work for or against it, and will accumulate the data for use in Master League and League mode.

“It is an honour to know that our game is enjoyed by so many people from different backgrounds,” said Takatsuka of the new additions. “From top professional players, to football enthusiasts and kids who just want a kickabout in the streets, its appeal is widening all the time. The new Become a Legend and Legends Modes are designed to convey the pressure and pace a real pro experiences, with players working as part of a strong side and working to prove their merit as a player. I feel great and motivated when people enjoy our games, and feel the new modes will open up new ways to enjoy PES.”

The ever-present Master League has also been reworked, with negotiations now a lot simpler and conducted on a two-tier club and personal basis, while loyalty now plays a part with disaffected players’ moods having an adverse affect on their performances.

Adding an all-new layer of gloss to PES 2009’s much-enhanced realism, the game has also undergone a radical aesthetic upgrade. Stadiums now have more realistic environment and atmospheric elements, while the PLAYSTATION®3 and Xbox 360 versions will also showcase LED hoardings. Likewise, the way distance is shown has been changed, with the use of contrast adding a depth field to the action, while there is also a new vertical camera angle that automatically switches to a closer proximity during key one-on-one situations.

Every player in the game has also been totally redefined, with all new face and body detail, with further facial animations and kit detailing adding to the realism. The game’s Edit mode has also been boosted with the ability to create bespoke matches via the importing of faces, kits, and even sound files for specific music and crowd chants for any team. A new Pixel Paint system has also been integrated, allowing players to create their own club crests and badges to add to their home-grown kits.

“We have pulled out all the stops to make PES 2009 a landmark in footballing games,” commented Jon Murphy, PES Project Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “From the most basic controls, through to the wide-ranging additions to game modes such as ‘Become a Legend’, all-new visuals, sound, and the Edit mode, Seabass and his team have strived to cram as much as they can into the new game. And with more online announcements to follow, there is every reason to believe that PES 2009 is the football game everyone has been waiting for.”

Plenty of news to digest there!
The majority of PES followers will have heard rumblings about 'Become a Legend' mode from various sources but this is confirmation of it's exsitence, along with an extended Edit mode which will surely please the editing community

The new vertical camera angle intrigues me as well, I played a Japanese game a year or so ago which zoomed right in when you were one-on-one allowing you to pull off tricks more accurately and I remember thinking to myself "Heh! That'd be good in PES", sadly that was the only redeeming feature of the game

Surely even you misery guts are getting a little excited now about PES 2009?
